ERM nope. Sounds like a cash grab to me. Extra 2 weeks for 9th and 10th fans, sponsors etc to shell out $$$$. Just do a 16 team knockout shall we? Hahahahah

It is anticipated that the new concept would benefit clubs financially by increasing crowds and television audiences at the back end of the season when teams are no longer in play-off contention.

According to data provided by the NRL, the number of "dead" matches – those in which one or both teams could not make the finals – have been increasing each season and were at a record high of 36 in 2018.

The average number of dead matches across the past 11 years is 23 per season - or 12 per cent of the 192 Telstra Premiership fixtures each year.

However, if the Wildcard Weekend concept had been in place last season that number would have been reduced to just eight and an average of 14 per season since 2008.

Those matches with no bearing on the final eight resulted in an average decline in attendances of 3,300 per match – costing home clubs about $80,000 per match in gate receipts.

Television audiences also decreased by eight per cent for dead games.

Annesley, who has returned to the NRL this season after a stint as Gold Coast CEO, said the proposed format would keep fans engaged for longer during the season and benefit clubs financially.

"I think at the Titans last year we were probably done and dusted by very early in the second round," Annesley said.

"You often hear clubs say mathematically we can still make it but mathematically means you have to win every game.

"If you've missed the eight for multiple years, trying to get members to re-sign for the following year can be difficult so if this is a way of keeping that engagement and that involvement from everyone associated with the game it is at least worth considering."

I think it makes sense, less dead games, more interest in the game.

Not a fan. 8 is already to high. Should be 6 at most. Want to increase revenue for the game? Hurry up and get your act together in expanding. Perth and a Brisbane 2 side should both be in the comp by now but as always the people running this game are so far behind in everything they do.

That extra game should of been in this new current tv deal that’s started this year but it’s the NRL we are talking about here.

Where do we draw the line, in a few seasons we might have every team in the play offs. Teams play a whole season for the chance to play in the grand final for which only the top teams should qualify. Remember we once only had four teams in playoffs now we have eight and we will always have dead games unless every team qualifies. It would also disadvantage teams finishing 7th & 8th due to additional qualifying game. Don’t like it.

i feel this system is better suited to an 18 or 20 team comp. Not 16!

The comp is deadset 10 rounds too long. I love having the footy always on but some rounds towards the end of the season are pointless.

Geez what a rubbish idea. I can't see the players wanting this as it's an extra week of footy. Long season as it is, adding another week to it just won't work.

Clubs won't be keen I would think for similar reasons, teams finishing 7 or 8 already have it very tough to make the GF, let alone giving them another hoop to jump through just for the sake of it.

Most of the time, the 9 and 10 team miss the semi's by several games.

Completely f*cking stupid idea but I'm not surprised since our game is run by morons like Todd Greenberg, Peter Beattie and Graham Annesley

Rewards mediocrity and poor performance, Going by the last 5 seasons you would only have to win 10 or 11 of your 24 games to play finals

Agree with @cowboyman, Wanna raise revenue get of your ****ing asses and expand instead sitting around and talking about it

This is a really bad idea! The NRL leadership should know better.

Cheering, we might have a chance now!

But seriously, what a garbage idea. It’s fine the way it is. If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.

They are trying to replicate the success of the million pound game in the ESL, but that game is two clubs fighting for their entire future, not just who will be the first team to lose in the finals.
