Live video - NRLW trial v Canberra 2pm Saturday

It’ll be concerning if the attack still looks like that mid-season but otherwise a great first hitout, all the first graders looked ready and a few good moments from the younger players as well. The 2 question marks going in were the new signings - Kukutai started off a bit shaky but was looking very strong by the end and Waterman didn’t look out of place.

Standouts: Gallagher, Predebon, H Southwell, Albert-Jones, Roche

Evah McKewn has the same potential as Beau Fermor to play both second row and centre. She has the speed and elusiveness to score plenty of tries if we need her at centre.
Having said that, only the two new Kiwi girls look like they might force their way into our starting 17.
Albert-Jones is playing prop now I think, but like last year, she needs to forget about ball playing and just hold the ball.
I think Canberra kept their top players on for a lot more of the game than we did, so the whole squad got a good test, and they all stood up.
I hope a few of them back up to play reserve grade tomorrow.

Was a little worried our reserves weren't going to match it with there reserves, but momentum swayed again and girls went on with it.
Standouts
Gallagher was a menace, so aggressive in attack and D, set for a huge second year.
Predabon was our best forward, can tell her fitness has gained hugely this yr and finished with a typical power predabon try.
Georgia Roach - as game went she got smarter and slicker, she'll provide so much space for Yas/Upton/A.Roach
Albert-Jones was very strong in attack and D, still lack a bit mobiility in defence, but she bent the line every hit-up and skilful with ball in hand.

Defence was solid, and attack very off at start, but to be expected. Teams effort is still the big talking point as they keep turning up for each other and forces opposition into errors.

Hoping to see more fluency in attack as season goes and it should improve considering they've been together for some time.

Thought Jace Carter did well coming in for Romaniuk, hope Kayla isn't injured badly.
Kukutai looked worthy a top 17 position.
Jess Gentle was strong on wing and you cant coach pace.
Waterman I think will only get better, no speedster but very strong and good in the air.

My starting squad for Rd 1

1.Upton
2. Gallagher
3. Parker
4. Roach
5. Gentle
6. Roache
7. Southwell
8. Predabon
9. Higgins
10. Johnston
11. Kukutai
12. Yas
13. Southwell

14. Maynard
15. Carter
16. Butler
17. Albert-Jones

Albert-Jones played middle then moved to second-row then finished on the other edge as the half. I thought she looked great.

A few of the players have talked about Jefferies being very big on fitness training.
You can see that most of the squad looks noticeably fitter already, with a few more weeks of training to go.
I think the Cowboys went better than expected last year because he got them very fit too.

Maybe one exception. Went past training during the week and the whole team was doing an opposed session except for Butler who was being put through fitness drills by herself. Think she’s got some work to do but she’ll have a few games of reserve grade to earn a spot before round 1.
