Lachlan Fitzgibbon re-signs until the end of 2021

Was scoring the same tries off Lamb last yr. His threat diminished toward the middle and end of season. Whoever's choice it was, 2 yr contract is about right...he took long enough to get to 1st grade standard now he's gotta maintain it.

Wasn't that about the same time he was swapped sides of the field? He was playing on the left wasn't he and benefiting from Ponga on that side, but when switched to the right side wasn't getting as much opportunity close to the line.

I believed Fitzy was always going to kick on, he just had football nouse body positioning knows how to twist hit a hole etc it's hard to teach that. The growth has been imo from becoming stronger fitter and and more level headed. He has played as big a role in the tries he has scored as any of the halves inside him, if it was just Ponga and Pearce Barnie and Guerra would have scored just as many.

With Lamb he scored em all on the right and a couple in the middle. With KP n Pearce they were all on the left. Not sure why they tried the switch for a few games there, they couldn't get it working though and without the Pearce threat, Ponga and Fitz were nullified.

Fitz suffered as much as the rest of the team did with having our spine on the Field together for what 4 games? In hindsight surprised we won as much as we did.

I was vouching for him last off season but I still feel he has to prove himself. Ponga and Pearce staying fit will be key to that. I wanna see him get double figures for tries again.

The real improvement Fitz made over the season was his workrate in defence.
He has always been pretty handy in attack but a bit slack in defence.
If you look at the first 5 games he played the full 80 minutes last year he averaged about 25 tackles a game, and if you look at the last 5 he played 80 minutes he averaged about 40 tackles, with a career high 46 tackles with 1 missed against the Warriors in round 22.
He had similar defensive number to Guerra at the end of the season - he was way short of that at the start of the season.

Yeah I remember sticking up for him when people were saying he was going to start in NSW cup, no way after his 17 form and 18 form rubber stamped it.

I never thought Fitz would make it - not because of ability - but because he was such a loose cannon. If the bit in his interview about him having "honest chats" with Brown is about Brown telling him not to be such a goose, he needed that.
I still think Newton had a lot to do with getting him to not fly off the handle every 5 minutes.
