Rudd pledges $2m as Johns kicks off depression walk
Prime Minister Kevin Rudd has pledged an extra $2 million in funding for research into depression and bipolar disorder.
Mr Rudd joined former rugby league player Andrew Johns this morning on the first leg of a six-day walk from Newcastle to Sydney to raise awareness of the illnesses.
Mr Rudd commended Johns for speaking publicly about his personal experiences.
"It's about levelling with the Australian people about a big problem out there," he said.
"It's levelling about the real problem, that is depression.
"What we are doing today and what Andrew has been doing for a long time is removing that last great Australian taboo - talking publicly and openly about mental illness."
