Mullen almost dies from drug overdose, subject of police probe

    Phil Rothfield, The Daily Telegraph

He was once a $1 million-a-year State of Origin star and a household name in rugby league.

Now the life of former Newcastle Knights half Jarrod Mullen has spiralled spectacularly out of control following a drug overdose and suspicions he could be linked to a drug supply ring.

The Daily Telegraph can reveal the 31-year-old, who is serving a four-year doping ban, almost died from a drug overdose last December and is now under investigation in his hometown of Newcastle in relation to the alleged drug supply ring.

To date, he has not been charged with any offence.

Detectives from strike force Castlestead have been working on his case for several months.

Ironically the former Blues Origin star almost lost his life from a drug overdose at a 40th birthday party in early December.

The host of the party, Willie Mason’s brother Les, has since been charged by police with drug supply offences, unrelated to the overdose.

Mullen was rushed to hospital in a critical condition. He survived after spending two days in intensive care.

After being discharged, the former Newcastle Knights half-back entered a rehab centre for six weeks and has since left Newcastle to live in Wollongong.

Police on Monday issued a statement regarding the investigation.

“Strike Force Castlestead was formed in September 2018 to investigate and dismantle an alleged drug supply syndicate operating across the Newcastle City and Lake Macquarie Police Districts.

“Since December 2018, 5 search warrants have been executed by Strike Force detectives and 10 people have been arrested and charged in relation to a range of matters including ‘supply a prohibited drug of large commercial quantity’ and ‘knowingly participate in criminal group’.

“Investigations by Strike Force Castlestead continue and further arrests are anticipated.”

After being made aware of his overdose in early December, the NRL helped to arrange Mullen’s treatment in a Sydney rehab centre.

In 2017 Mullen, then Newcastle’s highest-paid player, was banned for four years after testing positive to a prohibited substance.

Speak for yourself. The guy is one of my all time favourite players who completely ****ed his body up by putting it on the line for this club.

Not something that should be public.
It only makes it harder for him.
Sounds like he did rehab, so time for us to all mind our business and let him get on with life.

Agree completely with these. Least he's not a woman beater.

Once a Knight, always a Knight. Handled everything as well as he could, during. No player should be left in the dark that way. Just hope we did as much as we could for him.

All the dots line up back when we had the drug issues with Wicks, Houston etc. what a pathetic culture we must have had in that time. It’s a shame but no excuse

2 current Knights players at the same party. Unfortunately that adds a touch of credence to some very strong rumours at the time.

Yeah I would have been preferred everything being laid out bare and anyone caught had their contract ripped up as a lesson for the rest of the league even if it meant crippling the club and coming last.

It was clear Wicks was the fall guy and probably got compensated long after the dust had settled.

And let’s not kid ourselves. The drug culture is still engrained throughout the NRL.

Ridiculous statement. In what way was it clear that he was the fall guy? He was clearly the ringleader.

All of this speculation is totally pointless as is the link to our current players. Just wait and see before making up unfounded bullshit.

And being caught saying stuff like asking them to Ring Gids isn’t a hint of the larger network?
Houston had the best lawyer since OJ, kudos to them for that

There was no way if one gets caught he was going to rattle out on his team mates. I guess the ringleader risks more.

We’ll probably never know the full truth or extent but I’ll probably assume the that it could be bad. If we were a Sydney team we’d totally be screwed.

Sadly Mullo must be in a pretty bad way partying with Les and his track record.

Hopefully the guy can get over his demons. Good old Buzz lifting the lid. Laughable his defence of the Sharkies being 'under the cap' this week on Controversy Corner. Talking this, a middle aged Graham Hughes looks like a double for a young Jack Nicholson.

It's sad to say but there is a lot about Rugby league that is rotten, and we are not just talking about boys being boys either.

NRL needs to take a zero tolerance stance and start tearing up contracts for bringing the game into disrepute. I don't even buy its the 1% it seems to be a hell of a lot more than that.

    I genuinely feel for Mullo!
But it is no secret he has been mixing in the wrong circle for a very long time!

It's very sad, I am sure the Knights looked after his welfare after his drug ban as best they could. But at some point the club has to let Jarred manage himself.

Appears from the article above he has let himself stay mired in the drug culture around Newcastle and has had to take the step of moving himself and his family away.

It's sad, but not a surprise. And with Wests firm stance on player behaviour any player involved in this stuff is on notice.
