Give me a break: Joey

I WAS embarrassed by my performance on Friday night against the Dragons, and we are doing it a bit tough as a team at the moment.

But considering it was our first loss in five weeks, we are not about to start to panic. We started this round on top of the competition but I don't mind admitting the team is in a bit of a rut.

We have been for three or four weeks but have managed to keep winning, which, to a certain extent, has shielded the problems.

Everyone is feeling the pinch. I know I am feeling really flat and tired and I've probably felt that way ever since the Test match.

It's one of the reasons why I knew I wasn't ready to step into Origin when the call came on Tuesday afternoon.

I've hit the wall and feel as though I need a decent rest and quite a few of the boys are the same.

It has rattled me, because I am struggling to play to anything like the standard I set myself each week.

I embarrassed myself with some of the things I did against the Dragons and it was why I didn't hang around too long after the game. I wanted to get out of there as quick as I could.

I'm hoping the bye in a couple of weeks will give my body the rest it needs to spark me up for the back end of the season.

Everyone is carrying a few niggling injuries and we are missing some key players, which only added to the pressure on Friday night.

We were without Steve Simpson, Jarrod Mullen, Milton Thaiday, David Seage, Anthony Quinn and Clint Newton, but I don't want to take anything away from the Dragons.

They came to Newcastle with a great attitude to their defence and put us under pressure. We made some mistakes. I made two in the first half which indirectly led to tries and once we were in the position of having to play catch-up footy, we didn't respond.

We knew they were going to be up for the game, and not only because of what we did to them at Wollongong two months ago.

They needed the win and played like they needed it more than we did.

We have to pick ourselves up for the Bulldogs next weekend. Most teams hit a rough patch at some stage. We are in ours now but the secret is to limit the damage.

I will say the effort of Danny Buderus against the Dragons was an inspiration to everyone in the club.

Bedsy battled for three or four days to get on the field for Origin and then to back up two nights later against the Dragons was amazing.

i think its a major issue and hagan needs to do something about it. the way the bulldogs played last night indicates if we get our crap together we have a good chance of beating them.
