Dom Young Roosters player swap

HarVeeGee13

Danny 'Bedsy' Buderus
Here’s who they’ve got in their top 30 & when their current contract expires:

OUTSIDE BACKS

Joey Manu (2024)
Daniel Tupou (2023)
Joseph Suaalii (2023 and 2024 player options)
Billy Smith (2023, currently out till midseason, torn ACL)
Paul Momirovski (2024)
Jaxson Paulo (2023)
Corey Allan (2023)
Robert Toia (2025)

Very difficult to see any prospect of a swap here. Mixture of guys they’d never consider moving (Manu, Tupou, Suaalii, their prospect Toia) and guys who we wouldn’t want (Momo, Paulo and Allan are all worse than Tuala & Hunt; Billy Smith keeps doing his ACL).

All I see here really is evidence they might indeed want to get Dom early. They’re a pretty good shot at winning the comp this year, and Dom helps way more than Paulo or Allan if he’s on that right wing outside Manu.

FORWARDS

Middles

Victor Radley (2023)
Jared Waerea-Hargreaves (2023)
Lindsay Collins (2026)
Matthew Lodge (contract limbo, about to be re-signed)
Tuku Hau Tapuha (2023)
Terrell May (2024)

Again, hard to imagine it could be any of these. Radley, Collins and Lodge are likely key players for many years to come still, JWH is about to retire, Terrell May just had some breakout season in NSW Cup and will probably be eased in to first grade to replace JWH, and Tuku Hau Tapuha is a big Saifiti or Klemmer sized unit, the kind of forward you only realistically want maybe 2 of these days.

Specialist Edges

Angus Crichton (2024, out indefinitely for personal reasons)
Sitili Tupouniua (2023, currently out till midseason, torn ACL)
Siua Wong (2024)
Naufahu Whyte (2024)

Tupouniua is the first guy where it seems like a possibility. I don’t want him tbh. He’s been a long term prospect for Robbo but he’s been moved from position to position a lot due to from what I’ve heard are issues with his motor, his defence and his hands under fatigue. Might be one of the best hole runners in the comp and he’s quite an athlete - we know Adzy loves those - and we already have his little brother at the club on a second tier contract. I can see it happening, especially because I’ve heard Siua Wong is a real goer and might take his spot in the pecking order. Flipping Dom for Sitili around the June deadline when he’s about to come back from injury seems distinctly possible.

Versatile Forwards (both middle and edge)

Fletcher Baker (2023)
Nat Butcher (2024)
Egan Butcher (2023)

I can imagine the Knights being keen on all three but especially Egan Butcher, but if I’m the Roosters I’d start him on an edge for the next decade tbh. If we want a shot at Egan, we should pursue him now and then ask for the swap *after* we’ve already signed him on a multi year deal starting in 2024. I think he’s gonna be a really good long term first grader who would already be a first choice back rower at half the clubs in the comp - the Roosters have been building him up very slowly via the bench as they like to do.

Fletcher I believe comes from a country town a bit north of Newy so there’s a family connection there, but he’s the worst player/prospect of the three IMO. Part of why the Roosters forward depth is so good is because they throw these three guys at their problems when players are out. We could really use a Mr Fix It like that - Elliott fits the bill but he’s too good at lock to play anywhere else IMO.

TLDR:

Who we should want: Egan Butcher

Who we might get: Sitili Tupouniua or Fletcher Baker

Is really like to know who the two forwards are we’re chasing and trying to get before season kick off. Because if we ended up player swapping Dom for Sitili or somehow Butcher. And signed another strong forward ( I’m really hoping for Morgan Boyle from Manly) then or overall team depth takes a sharp rise for this season onwards. Be very smart management. I was initially against a swap, but if we can get a decent forward out of them for a few years whilst Oryn and co develop. Then that’d be a huge win.

Roosters probably envision their 2024 pack as something like this (or at least, this is what makes sense to me):

8. Lodge
9. Smith
10. Collins
11. E Butcher
12. Crichton/Wong/N Butcher
13. Radley

14. Watson
15. N Butcher/Tupouniua
16. May
17. Wong/Tupouniua

Others. Baker, Tapuha, Whyte, 1 or 2 new signings/promoted players

Boyle hasn't played much footy recently. I was actually getting a vibe his career was on the skids in a big way...

80th minute, scores locked at 12 all in the grand final, Roosters shift the ball wide! Paulo has it, the line wide open! Oh no! He's **** his pants and dropped the ball! Feces are escaping from his shorts! Tago has the ball! Tago at the 30! Tago over halfway! No one can catch him! Paulo is crying! Tago scores! Penrith have won the grand final! Three in a row!

I agree that I don’t think such a thing is imminent. I think it’s something that could come into play closer to mid season, depending on how we go, how they go, if there’s injuries, etc. It’s one of those things where if by May they’re flush with fit forwards - which seems likely, they have a lot of depth - but their backs depth is stretched, maybe they hit us up.

Taylan May has just his acl, Penrith might want a winger for a year, we might need a Spencer Leniu type front rower...

Nah I reckon Leniu is too valuable to rent out. More than Dom if you're trying to win the comp IMO. He's gonna get capital P Paid to go somewhere else from 2024 on. Panthers have still got Turuva who's quite good and can cover May for the year.

Almost certainly not lol. Their starting pack in round 1 will likely feature Josh King and Trent Loiero. It’s gonna be infuriating watching them go good in the early rounds with literally only 3-4 first grade capable forwards.
