Best Ever Signings

Zeb Taia was a great one. Played a handful of first grade games at Parramatta and came here on a cheap contract - was probably in the top five second rowers in the game in 2009, became an international as well.

Sadly Bennett came in, played him at prop and jettisoned him to (where he won several Chellenge Cups and Grand Finals).
I was so annoyed when Bennett got rid of Zeb, he was one my favourite players at the time.

What good did Bennett actually do here? Yes we made a prelim final but at the expense of ruining our roster by parachuting in has beens like Gower and players over the hill........ Ruined Kurt Gidley, left us with Sione and his brothers..........Took us how many years after to fix the roster and how many spoons?
Bennett did damage but everyone forgets what happened in 2015, the year after he left. Signed Mamo, Hodkinson and Mullen to monster deals. He left us in a bad spot but the people in charge in 2015 made it much, much worse.

Bennett is useless with average players in clubland. And all the clubs he has been with have fallen even further into the drain when he leaves. This is not what happens with good leadership and development.
Look at how different Bellamy and Cleary are with developing players and systems.
Now that’s good leadership.

Ben Talty is on a train and trial deal in Melbourne.
He is just the sort of player who will thrive under Bellamy.

The Warriors didn't exactly excel when Cleary left.

Not that I think that was his fault, plenty of factors at play when a coach changes.

Personal opinion but I'd rank Mark Sargent above Butts in the 8.

Butts was here longer, and I'm not throwing any shade at Butterfield, great player. But Sargent came here 89 and won the Rothmans medal that year, and became the Knights first Australian test player.
I'm torn by this, when I first became a Knights supporter in 92 Sargent was on a rampage and pretty quickly became my favourite player, with his hattrick vs Canberra to get us into the finals series.

But absolutely loved what Butterfield brought to the team as his career developed, thought he was a great captain and I do always love a player that keeps improving as they age (see Mad Dog, Gagai).

I guess going with Superleague did taint Sargent a bit for me, but I see why he did it at that stage in his career, and don't hold that against him now days.

Flip of a coin between them for starting prop in our greatest ever side alongside Harragon, for me.

David Fairleigh has only been mentioned twice in this thread.
Once by me, once by Celticman98.
He only played 26 games for us.
He played in 2000. Many people think our 2000 roster was the the best ever Knights roster. Better than 2001, but injuries at the wrong time kept us out of the GF.
Our player of the year in 2000 - David Fairleigh
Players player in 2000 - David Fairleigh
Coach's award in 2000 - David Fairleigh

A lot of our greatest players were at their peak in 2000.

I don't think 2000 was injuries ... O'Davis and possibly Clinton O'Brien are the only two names missing from that grand final qualifier that could have potentially been in the side if we were full strength. MacDougall was outstanding at fullback in 2000 though, and O'Davis missed the majority of the season.

Just a massive choke and some questionable coaching choices from Warren Ryan, unfortunately.

Agree Fairleigh was a great signing though.
