Blues great Andrew Johns' advice helps Maroons debutant Daly Cherry-Evans
EXPERT advice from NSW great Andrew Johns could become Queensland's unlikely Origin weapon.
Maroons bench X-factor Daly Cherry-Evans plans to turn the Immortal's own tactics against the Blues.Cherry-Evans has credited special one-on-one training with Johns at Manly this year and the guidance of his own NRL coach Geoff Toovey, another Blues great, as the reason why he has surged into Queensland's Origin team in just his third NRL season.Johns was hired exclusively by the Sea Eagles this year and the knowledge from the man crowned the halfback of the century has been invaluable for Cherry-Evans.The 24-year-old has no hesitation using information from the NSW hero when he gets his opportunity off the bench on Wednesday night at Suncorp Stadium."I've been very spoilt this year in regards to people around me," Cherry-Evans said."I've got Andrew Johns, I've got Geoff Toovey and now I've been spoilt with Cooper Cronk and Johnathan Thurston, so I just hope I'm being smart enough to get whatever I can out of them."(Johns) has definitely had a bit to do with my development. I think it's only benefited me as a player.

"Hopefully Joey can keep teaching me things along the way and I look forward to putting them into play next Wednesday."Cherry-Evans trained at centre, hooker and with the tight forwards during the Maroons first session at Coolum yesterday.Just like Toovey and Johns, who both split time between hooker and halves in their Origin careers, Cherry-Evans will have to bide his time before moving into his preferred halfback position.
The lines of communication with Toovey and Johns are understandably silent at Origin time, but Cherry-Evans is rooming with Cronk and learning as much as he can from one of the most committed and thorough professionals in the game today."I think even though they're club coaches, they are still Blues at the end of the day so they draw a pretty clear line," he said."No heads up on that sort of (Origin) stuff from the guys."It has been a rapid rise to Origin level for Cherry-Evans. He was plying his trade for the Sunshine Coast in the Intrust Super Cup competition in 2010. Now he has won a premiership at Manly, has played for Australia and is about to become an Origin debutant."I definitely had aspirations that one day I'd be playing for the Maroons but to picture it coming this soon, I didn't think that would happen."
