Interesting that Jack Johns has been named as starting second rower for Souths in their first trial. He is tall enough, but he'd need to have bulked up a fair bit.
A ball playing forward is every coach's dream.
Cory Denniss and Jacob Gagan also in the side.

Danny Buderus backs Danny Levi as Newcastle’s top hooker for season 2019

    AAP
    February 13, 2019 9:58am

Newcastle NRL legend Danny Buderus has backed Danny Levi to win the race for the Knights’ hooking role and claim his famous No.9 jersey.

Levi is in a battle with recruit Kurt Mann for the 2019 starting role, with Slade Griffin’s absence through a knee injury expected to extend through the first four months of the season.

A rising talent at Newcastle for the past four seasons, Levi is yet to spend a full year in the starting role after having played almost half of his 66-game career off the bench.

But Buderus, after working closely with Levi in junior grades, believes the 23-year-old Kiwi is ready to be Newcastle’s first-choice dummy-half for their March 15 season opener against Cronulla.

“This is his time now,” Buderus, who played 226 of his 257 games for Newcastle at hooker, said.

“He knows he can play better as well. That also helps when you’ve got a different team around you which he has now.

“All these guys have had tough campaigns and the team has changed. (Coach) Nathan Brown has said this is the best team he’s had since he’s been here.

“Everything should rise; your performance should rise. He’s (Levi’s) got to lead the way and not overplay his hand and just play his natural game.”

Buderus on Friday will help to kick off the annual Hogs for the Homeless motorcycle tour through regional NSW with Brad Fittler and other ex-players, which has previously raised $700,000 for Youth off the Streets.

Buderus works with Fittler at a junior and senior Origin level but, as an adviser to the Knights, his heart has remained this summer in Newcastle.

If Brown opted to start Levi at No.9, it would allow Mann to come off the bench as a utility, similar to his role at St George Illawarra last year when he filled in almost every position.

Uncapped rookie Zac Woolford would likely be in line for a debut off the bench if Mann was called into the starting line-up in any role throughout the season, with Jamie Buhrer another option.

“(Levi’s) grown up in probably not the best time to be a Newcastle Knight as far as results go,” Buderus said.

“His mindset will be to get those wins just to experience what the town is like when it’s winning.

“A lot of these guys have been through the rigour and the hard times ... I really hope they get to experience that.”

Buhrer might as well retire if he is that low in the pecking order - although it's still my opinion that the only 2 guys we have who could go 60 minutes as a firstgrade hooker are Levi and Buhrer - neither Mann nor Woolford could do it right now.

As the only real hookers I would like to see Levi in firsts and Woolford in res playing 60 mins plus with Mann and Buhrer covering the remainder, could be 10 either side of half hopefully injury free until Grif is back fully fit to play then no doubts we will have some changes, Buhrer needed as back up at least for this season.

    Article about Tex Hoy.
Says he has trained mostly at fullback.
He looked to be at fullback early on, but in recent footage it looks more like he is playing 5/8.

Fullback is his best shot right now because we don't have too many options if 1 or 2 fullbacks get injured.

His running game is his best quality, but he has a full range of skills - he can kick, pass, read the play to know when to backup - very strong defender for a 19 year old.
They used him as a utility last year because he is equally at home at fullback, wing, centre and 5/8, and the way he keeps growing, he could probably spend time in the forwards soon.

So the "fans" on the Knights site have voted for the round 1 team.

    Connor Watson (63%)
    Edrick Lee (50%)
    Tau Moga (28%)
    Jesse Ramien (46%)
    Shaun Kenny-Dowall (54%)
    Kalyn Ponga (76%)
    Mitchell Pearce (88%)
    David Klemmer (88%)
    Danny Levi (62%)
    Tim Glasby (26%)
    Lachlan Fitzgibbon (56%)
    Aidan Guerra (33%)
    Herman Ese’ese (34%)

    Kurt Mann (67%)
    James Gavet (24%)
    Daniel Saifiti (15%)
    Sione Mata'utia (26%)

I expected a fan vote to have Watson at 5/8 and Ponga at fullback.
They have voted Ramien and Moga on the wrong sides.

I think the voting was more about who will be in each position, rather than who should be. I'd be keen to see this team get a run though, once Moga and Ramien are swapped over as you mentioned.

What’s with the 12% not voting for Pearce at halfback?

Probably some wanted him at 5/8 and some clearly thought Cogger was still here.

There were only 3 options in the halfback poll - and one of them, Crossland, isn't even eligible, so 12% must be Lino fans or drew their own box and voted Joey Johns.

Despite playing in the All Stars game Ponga/Pearce expected to get about 40 minutes together in the Dragons trial

Klemmer and Glasby have also knocked back opportunities to sit out of the trials but have opted to play a bit and get some match practice in which is good to see. Wont be long from what he said, something like 20 minutes.

Personally couldn't care if we lost 30-0 and fielded out reserve grade side if it meant no key players getting injured.

You can train all pre season doing game based rigours but nothing compares to actual match fitness. The new blokes need to practice our shapes and things as well. Doing it in actual match conditions will benefit.

That fan picked side might be better than what we get, which is sort of surprising.

The salary cap thing? Just hope it's not us if true. Police being involved sounds far fetched. Have to be something bigger.

2SM, Tunks and Hughes is all just negative about the game. Gets kinda old.
