Young guns to keep an eye on in 2019

Newcastle Knights
Mon 3 Dec 2018, 05:58 PM

They aren't household names now but that doesn't mean they won't be one day.

Even Kalyn Ponga, Mitchell Pearce and Aidan Guerra were once hungry kids itching to get their chance in the top grade.

These are the next generation of the Knights.

Eligible for Jersey Flegg or recently promoted to the ISP NSW competition, these are the five fresh faces to keep an eye on ahead of the 2019 season.

Beau Fermor

This name will come as no surprise to Knights supporters.

Last season was a massive one for the workhorse backrower.

Fermor was named Jersey Flegg Player of the Year at the NSWRL awards night and named the 2018 20s Player of the Year for the Knights.

A fierce competitor who runs a brave line and doesn't slack in defence, Fermor joined the Knights last year from Melbourne.

The 20-year-old represented Queensland in the 20s Origin in 2018 and will join the fulltime NRL training squad during the pre-season.

Starford To'a

The outside back joined the Knights in 2018 from New Zealand.

He started last season in SG Ball where he played fullback and led the tackle breaks in the competition and finished second in the try scoring ranks for the competition.

At the conclusion of the SG Ball season, he moved into the 20s where he played centre.

An Australian Schoolboy, To'a is strong with outstanding footwork and pace.

He turns 19 in 2019 and is signed until the end of 2021.

Phoenix Crossland

He's a halfback with leadership qualities.

Crossland started last season in SG Ball where he captained the side and represented the NSW Origin under 18s as the halfback.

After SG Ball wrapped up, Crossland moved into the 20s where he became their first-choice playmaker.

A strong defender, who has pace and a slick kicking game, Crossland will join the NRL pre-season in 2019.

Crossland is signed with the Knights until the end of 2021.

Mathew Croker

He captained the Knights Under 18s in 2017 where he was named the SG Ball player of the year.

He moved into the Jersey Flegg team in 2018 where he took out the Players' Player of the Year award.

Turning 20 in 2019, the forward is a product of the mid-north coast.

His younger brother, Harry is also in the Knights' lower grades and an Australian Schoolboys representative.

Still eligible for Flegg, Croker is a smart and skilful middle forward with all the attributes to continue his rugby league rise in the near future.

Bradman Best

Best has game changing ability.

A centre-fullback with maturity beyond his years, Best turns 18 in late 2019.

Representing the Australian Schoolboys at 17, he also played NSW under 18s Origin a year young.

Powerful and fast, Best is signed with the Knights on a long-term deal.

Grant Stuart
This is one of the things I am looking forward to most now that the rebuild phase is complete. When any of those guys above make their top grade debuts, it will be on merit. They will be there because they are ready for first grade. It's not because they are the best option to fill a hole like the last couple of years. That is a whole new mindset. When someone gets called up now, it will be a case of "watch this kid go", not "I hope this kid goes alright".

Can't find a team list for the first test tonight but there are photos of Adrian Lam presenting the jerseys and Toa, Best, Croker and Madden all got jerseys. Not sure if Alexander got one because they didn't all have pics.

I was informed Croker, Sabb, Altus, Doorey (Injured) & one other player that slipped my mind are the 5 players missing out.
Will soon see if the information passed onto me is correct.

I was correct- Aussie team down 12-0 first half and being totally dominated is all facetts of the game.
The outstanding players so far on this tour have done absolutely nothing. The opposition to this point have not been the greatest, But Australia being out classed and out played.
Best , Toa, Some strong runs but need to get involved more
If anyone thinks Best is close to playing 1st grade that is laughable.
Toa had some good defensive hits. But done nothing else.
Gray the hooker is absolute rubbish, His service is ordinary
The full back has dropped 4 bombs in the first half.

Aussie will need to pull finger out if the want to win this game, The positive is its only 12-0.

Good luck 2nd half boys

2nd half a few changes needed to be made & were done accordingly. Toa to full back & played great. Aussie boys picked up there game in the 2nd half but didnt win the game going down 14-8.
Best got involved alot more but Toa was the stand out.
Even though it turned out a closae game Ebgland should of score 2 tries in the second half. Looking forward to the next gamr.
A few changes need to be made for the next game. Max Altus for mine has to start at hooker Ryan gray was terrible.
Manu Alexander needs to start at center & Toa to fullback
Manu plated strong when he come on.

2 tries all isn't a bad result against a team made up of guys who are mostly training with seniors and many have played ESL already.
The guy who scored the first try against us played 4 ESL games for Leeds this year and was loaned to a second division side where he scored 15 tries in 11 games against men.

Knight shines as Schoolboys fall to England

Newcastle Knights
Sat 15 Dec 2018, 02:24 PM

Star To'a has impressed in a beaten Australian Schoolboys side.

The visitors went down 18-6 to England Academy in Leeds overnight.

Knights duo Bradman Best and To'a featured in the side, while Timanu Alexander and Harry Croker missed out on the match.

To'a was award the player of the match in the first Test loss to England and back up his performance on Saturday.

The centre sparked the attack with some tough runs and secured the first try of the match.

To'a scored courtesy of a kick to get the Australian side out to a 6-2 lead but the English levelled up shortly after before running away with the game.

Sounds like Toa, the kiwi fresh off the boat, was Australia’s best on the tour. This time last year he was packing his bags in Auckland to move to Newcastle. I think he is the quickest improver since Timana Tahu joined the club at 16 and debuted at 18.

Jaron Purcell I think they mean

Issac Lee is a new name I think. I wonder if he's Edrick's brother?

Paul the Chief Harragon
I didn't even notice they spelt Jaron as Jacob. Did a little research on lee and it's saying he was a centre in 15s at titans development squad and is the son of former Cronulla prop Danny lee.

Danny 'Bedsy' Buderus
They can't even spell Dureau, so only one player name wrong is probably good.

I would think it likely this Isaac Lee is a Lismore kid and a centre. Son of former Shark Danny Lee and played juniors witrh Tweed Heads Seagulls and Titans.

Matt Croker doesn't seem to be training with firstgrade now.
I really want to see Matt Croker and Harry Croker play at least one game together this year.
Both seem really smart footballers with great awareness of what other players are doing around them, and I want to see how that works when they are playing in the same team.
