Knights haven't released summer squads in many years.

Exciting teen prospect Sasagi extends contract

    Newcastle Knights
    Mon 17 Dec 2018, 12:55 PM

Exciting nib Newcastle Knights prospect Simi Sasagi has extended his contract.

The 17-year-old has been rewarded with a new deal following an impressive pre-season training stint with the first-grade squad.

A five-eighth with versatility, the New Zealand product is signed until the end of 2020 with an option for a further two seasons.

"He's a talented player on the field and a wonderful person off it," Player List Manager Troy Pezet said.

"Although Simi is only young, he's taken everything that's been thrown his way. He's shown us enough that we wanted to secure him long-term."

After playing the 2018 season with SG Ball, Sasagi started training with Jersey Flegg before progressing to ISP NSW and ultimately promoted to the NRL training squad.

It's been a rapid rise for the youngster but one he's relishing.

"I'm lucky to have a few weeks of first grade training under my belt," Sasagi said.

"I moved over from New Zealand last year for SG Ball pre-season and now I'm training with the NRL squad.

"It's a pretty overwhelming feeling that the Club sees something in me.

"I just need to put my head down and do the hard work."

Heading into his final year of High School at St Marys Gateshead, the playmaker moved to Australia earlier this year.

While he's predominantly played five-eighth, Sasagi can fill a range of roles.

"He's a footy player," Pezet said.

"He could be anything. At this stage, we're just keen to see him develop and worry about where he'll play down the track."

    Great stuff.
Only my opinion, but I was more impressed with Simi than Toa, and hearing he is a year younger makes him even more impressive.
Last year he played centre, wing, 5/8, lock and a lot of time at hooker, and I thought he was our most likely to score or make something happen whatever position he played.
Training with first grade will be great for him.

Only caught the last 10 minutes of Harold Matts so can't really comment.

Manly won SG Ball by a few tries & looked like a better more organised team. But having said that the Knights did mix & match a lot of players so weren't really settled with combinations.

Manly were a big side & their starting hooker had them rolling along nicely up the middle. Their 5/8 Kaeo Weekes is pure class, he has brilliant hands & real wheels, has to be close to the best/most talented player in that comp although I'm pretty sure he's a year younger.

The Tasha Gale girls easily beat Melbourne. Melbourne were a bigger team but the Knights were much quicker & more skilful.

Players who have been training with the u20 have now dropped back to the u18's and some played in this trial. The camp is at Bonny Hills just outside Port Macquarie and the teams train at Regional High school. The juniors have had a camp at this location for the last few years. From all reports the Titans team was big.

Sounds like a good effort by all the sides against the sharks, who have been very strong at junior level in recent years.
A big win by the girls against Cronulla is a massive result.
Last year they thrashed us the first time we played them and we got closer and closer all season till we gave them 2 close games in the finals.
I think that would be the first loss in 2 years for Cronulla - and 5 tries to 1 is pretty convincing.

SG Ball showed a big improvement on the Manly game. Was a good win by the girls but don't get too carried away. Last year Cronulla were virtually untouchable as they had five Aussie touch, Oz Tag & Rugby Union 7s reps. This year three are ineligible due to age & the other two are eligible by age but now in the senior Woman's 7s squad, one will probably make the final cut & play in the Sydney 7s this weekend

Cessnock is better than Charlestown for viewers - better parking, much better stand, easier to get to etc - but I notice most of the players seem to be living around Charlestown these days and guys like Ponga and Saulo and a few others were at the under 20s game they played there last year.
The playing surface at Charlestown also looks a bit more lush.
Anyway - looks like all our home games are at Charlestown.

Article in the Herald today says Hunter Sports High has just finished a 45 million $ upgrade including a new league field and is starting a new girls league programme.

With all the junior teams now playing at St Johns oval - about 2klm from Hunter Sports High - and a lot of our players going to school there - I wonder if we have moved junior training to the school facilities? It would save a lot of people a lot of travelling time I imagine.

Have a friend's daughter from Port Macquarie offered a scholarship to HSH for the girls league. If I remember right training is at the school. Come a long, long way since my mate Norm Wilkinson taught there. RIP Norm.
