Griffin is definitely one of the best defenders we have seen at the Knights - up there with Bedsy and Kurt Gidley. Apparently he was considered the best wrestler at Melbourne, which is a huge rap.
It's a shame that he probably won't be able to get in and wrestle with the guys.
I'd like to see him work a lot with big Bobby Tracey. That guy has an impressive attacking game, but zero wrestling skills.

    Meet the 2019 coaching staff

    Newcastle Knights
    Thu 1 Nov 2018, 12:40 PM

Meet the nib Newcastle Knights coaching staff.

Head coach Nathan Brown is in charge for his fourth season with the Club after re-signing earlier in the year.

    His support staff includes:

James Shepherd, who joined in 2018 from Cronulla and Tonga Test coach Kristian Woolf.

Woolf has joined from Townsville where he has coached the Blackhawks for the past four seasons.

After taking charger of the ISP NSW side mid-year, Rory Kostjasyn has stayed on as coach.

He will continue to assist Brown with the NRL side while also coaching ISP NSW.

After running the Elite Pathways program at the Knights where he coached junior teams, Dureau is now in control of the Jersey Flegg.

Balin Cupples has joined the Club as new Head of Physical Performance.

Cupples links with the Knights after four seasons with the Warriors.

Anthony Wood has joined the performance staff from North Queensland as Strength and Conditioning Coach, while Nathan Beutel is a Strength and Power coach who comes to the Club via Parramatta.

Sam Kennedy has left the Roosters to take up the position of Elite Pathways performance manager.

Matthew Toohey was responsible for the juniors but moves into the position of NRL Assistant Strength and Conditioning Coach in 2019.

James McBrien is the Sports Science Analyst and joins the Knights from the Greater Western Sydney Giants.

Phil Bosson, who has been with the team for several seasons, is Head Physio and will be supported by Louisa Cutler.

She has joined the Club as the Rehab Physio after 10 seasons with the Sydney Roosters.

    Long serving doctors return

    Newcastle Knights
    Thu 8 Nov 2018, 09:03 AM

The nib Newcastle Knights have welcomed back two of the Club's longest serving physicians as the 2019 pre-season gets underway.

Veteran physician, Dr. Peter McGeoch and Sports Injury Specialist, Dr. Neil Halpin worked at the Knights together for more than two decades.

Both men are highly respected by the Club and were made Knights life members after wrapping up duties in 2016, however, the Knights are pleased to announce the duo's return following a two-year break.

Director of Football, Brian Canavan, said the homecoming of Dr. McGeoch and Dr. Halpin is a massive coup for the Club.

"They're the two longest serving physicians in the game and have been duly acknowledged by the National Rugby League," Mr Canavan said.

"It's a great coup for the Club to have two doctors of their pre-eminence in sports physicians work available for us going forward."

Dr. Luke Dan has also joined the Club.

The current Australian Rugby League Schoolboys doctor, Dan joins the Knights from Manly.

Having trained with Dr. Nathan Gibbs, Dr. Dan has worked with the NSW Country ruby league and was the team doctor for Toa Samoa in the 2017 RLWC.

"Doctor Luke Dan has been appointed as assistant medical officer," Mr Canavan continued.

"He will support doctor's Peter and Neil, as well as act as medical officer for the ISP NSW and Jersey Flegg Knights teams.

"The Club is pleased to have him."

And not bring Nathan Gibbs views to the Knights "Andrew Johns could well suffer more damage if he plays in the Grand Final" vs. Manly 1997!!!!

I wonder if Mooney got wind of the impending issue with the sharks emails and that is the real reason he removed himself from the game.

Mooney was head of football at the time Flanagan was emailing them, the sharks apparently initiated the emails and I am betting Mooney was facing deregistration as a result of this.

It's certainly possible, standing down from the club right now raises questions. Just glad he was able to get the roster to the state it is now.

Not sure if we had engaged a player to assist previously but this is a must in todays game, we should have been doing this from the beginning of pre season. Ramien is a great talent but all can pick up things from past players that have been there and done it before.

I don't know anything about Harold Mathews coach Scott Robinson, but I have to say our Mathews team this year was our best coached defensive side ever IMO.
We conceded 82 points in 8 games in the regular season, but the one game we lost was an away game against the next best team in the comp and we were about 5 players short of our best squad, so conceded 30 points in that one game.
The other 7 games we conceded 52 points, so just over 7 a game, while scoring over 30 per game.
In under 16s you just about expect that any side that holds the ball for 6 tackles in their opponents half will score, because any big prop who gets the ball close to the line will barge over, but in the grandfinal the boys defended their line for close to 15 minutes in a row at the start of the second half - unheard of in under 16s.
I looked at the ladders for the last 4 seasons of Mathews and the next best points conceded in a season was 90 points, so even with that one poor result, our defence was better.
You often see good attack in under 16s, but really good defence is pretty rare at that level, and all down to good coaching I think.
I'll be looking to see how this coach goes in the future.

Article on fox sports saying that Gardner has reached out to Joey and offered him any role wants. Agree with a few others that the guy needs to just shut up. Imo Matty would be the better coaching option

With Bedsy walking, hardly the time I think Joey will get involved.

Bedsy wont want to hurt the club so publicly I expect him to say something like he couldn't dedicate his time to the role with his other commitments etc.

But given it's likely he quit over not really having a role there due to Gardner making the calls himself, doubtful Joey will want to walk in to that.

Gardner is largely responsible for Wests group going from strength to strength over several decades.
You put a problem in front of that guy and he doesn't dither around, he goes hard for a solution, and if that doesn't work, he tries something else.
People seem to be calling out Gardner for multiple reasons right now, but it all comes down to him going hard to fix whatever is wrong, but I say get used to it, because he'll either fix the Knights or decide they are unfixable and chuck them in the trash bin and go back to focusing on his real business of running the Wests group, which is about 20 times bigger than the Knights.

I found it frustrating that he threw up model after model for this centre of excellence, and what they seem to have finally settled on is nothing like the first model - but running things up the flagpole to see who salutes seems to be his thing.

He won't sit on his hands and do nothing - he'll get a coach, and if that guy is no good, he'll get another one, and if that guy is no good - he'll do something else.

My only real criticism of him is he is learning as he goes. He has an advisory committee there and it appears from the outside with Bedsy walking away, that he is not utilising them at all.

There was supposed to be a play from the outset to get the right people in to run the club, yet it appears he is running the club himself. Wasn't he only supposed to be in the role a short term and then step aside for another CEO to take over.

I like the fact we have moved Brown on, it was the right call and in my opinion alarm bells should have been raised earlier (and they may well have behind the scenes), when Ramien was told to pack his bags. But moving Brown on was the right call, we have settled for a poor football team for far too long with no expectation of excellence from the players. So if Gardner brings in a work ethic of excellence or bust then that is a welcome change.

In fact moving Brown on prior to the end of the season may work out nicely to get the new coach involved early, get their opinion on recruitment while the deals are being done. No point firing him at the end of the season if you have no confidence in him and you can't rely on the coach to make recruitment calls if he isn't in your plans to coach the next year.

He just needs to quiet down, stop getting his head in the media and work with the people in the club to get the right outcomes.

He hired Canavan - who was literally the head of football for the entire NRL in his last job and CEO of the Sydney Roosters in the job before that.
Canavan is the guy doing the research on coaches, was going to run the enquiry into our coaching etc etc.
Gardner is doing the talking, but Canavan is doing all the work on finding a coach and designing our future coaching structure, and I can't think of anyone more qualified to do it.
As I said in an earlier post - none of the media are having a shot at Canavan - the guy doing the work - because they would look silly if they did.

    So for 2020-

    Head Coach -
    Adam O'Brien

    Assistant coaches
    David Furner (prop)
    Willie Peters (halfback)

Development coaches (reserves and under 20s I assume)
    Rory Kostjasyn (half or hooker)
Eric Smith (coached Muswellbrook Rams to a group 21 title before joining the Melbourne coaching team 5 years ago) - would have coached Beau Fermor and Jirah Momoisea in Melbourne under 20s 2 years ago and currently coaching Melbourne's Qld cup feeder club and still in the race for the title.

    Junior development coach
    Scott Dureau

    Head trainer
No word yet, but will be surprized if Cupples doesn't get another year.
