Apparently it was more than Donovan who was injured. I heard we had injury after injury up in NQ and that's how we let our big lead go in the final 20-30. Playing in that heat and humidity with no bench players would make it impossible. So really we had them beat well before injuries and winning our 3 other games against top teams, the boys are going well. A big win today could see us at top of the ladder.

NYC Knights swept away by Dragons

    Sat 4th April, 06:53PM

The NYC Knights lost 46-36 to the St George Illawarra Dragons on a very wet Easter Saturday at Hunter Stadium, conceding four second-half tries after leading 24-10 at half-time.

Fullback Bryce Donovan returned to the side from injury, replacing Dylan Phythian who suffered a facial injury in Round 4.

Both sides fought hard in challenging conditions, conceding a minimum of penalties and errors despite the greasy surface and slippery ball.

The Knights didn't start particularly well as they let the Dragons collect their own kick-off 20 metres out with the help of a lucky bounce.

The away side needed no second invitation, and scored thirty seconds later on the right side through forward Ryan James. Winger Bessie Aufag-Toomaga's kick was waved away, leaving the Dragons with a 4-0 lead with barely three minutes played.

The Knights retaliated at the end of their next set, pinning the Dragons into their own in-goal and subsequently forcing a line drop-out.

Braden Robson took full advantage on the right side, diving over to score in the corner.

Brock Lamb was unable to convert from the sideline, locking the score at 4-4 with seven minutes played.

The Knights struck again in the 16th minute on the back of some strong build-up play, captain Levi burrowing over from dummy-half left of the uprights.

Lamb converted successfully this time, pushing the score to 10-4.

It was proving to be an end-to-end contest, and three minutes later Lachlan Stein offloaded for winger William Tom to step past his marker and score.

Aufag-Toomaga's kick went straight between the posts this time, pushing the score up to 10-10.

The Knights continued to threaten though, and on the back of a penalty that helped them all the way from their own line to the Dragon's, Levi scored his second beneath the uprights.

Lamb nailed an easy conversion, giving the Knights a 16-10 lead with eleven minutes to play in the first half.

Eight minutes later the Knights were on the offensive again, Lamb placing an elusive diagonal grubber for centre Josh Birch to pick up and dive over. Lamb's conversion was unsuccessful, leaving the score at 20-10.

The half-time siren was poised to ring, but the Knights were hungry for another try and Robson crossed over for his second in the right corner. Lamb was again unable to convert from the sideline, leaving the half-time score at 24-10.

The Dragons started the second half in the exact same way they started the first, second-rower James forcing his way over on the right edge again with only three minutes played.

Aufag-Tommaga's kick was successful, the score now 24-16.

Dragons' halfback Adam Clune then put on a burst of pace to slot through a hole in the line and chip the ball on for fullback Matthew Dufty to score between the posts. Aufag-Toomaga converted from straight in front of the uprights, pushing the score to 24-22.

The Dragons continued to build momentum and scored again in the 57th minute via Aufag-Toomaga, the winger clamping down on a pacy grubber in the right corner.

Aufag-Toomaga missed the kick from an acute angle, but the Dragons still led 26-24.

From the Knights' kick-off the Dragons broke through the line again, Tom laying the platform for prop Jack Kavanagh to score a scrappy try.

Aufag-Toomaga again missed his kick, the score 30-24.

The Knights managed to pull back one of their own in the 64th minute through Faitotoa Faitotoa.

The rain was pelting down now but Lamb managed to convert, bringing the scores level once more.

The Dragons were the next to score, Tom crossing over for his second on the left in the 69th minute. Aufag-Toomaga couldn't convert from the sideline, leaving the score at 34-30.

Three minutes later the Dragons crossed over again, this time Dufty bagging his second following a twenty metre run.

Aufag-Toomaga kicked true from in front, giving the Dragons a 40-30 lead.

The Knights refused to give up, and with two minutes left on the clock Brody Lam received a quick offload from Faitotoa to score.

Lamb did exceptionally well to score from the sideline against a heavy wind, pushing the score to 40-36.

The Dragons had the last say in the contest though, five-eighth Drew Hutchinson scoring near the uprights to restore the Dragons' ten-point lead.

Aufag-Toomaga converted, giving the Dragons a 46-36 win.

We should have a big win over 16th placed Cronulla, but who knows with NYC.
Every year we hear the coaches say they are working hard on defense and they don't want to be a typical NYC side that gives up a lot of points, but every year we see **** defense from most, if not all, NYC sides - especially in the last 20 minutes.

    Match Analysis:

The key to success in the NYC Newcastle Knights’ Round 6 game against the Cronulla Sharks on Friday evening will be in the side’s ability to perform for the full 80 minutes.

Last week saw the side dominate the first half, but lose grip in the second stanza of the game.

We need them to be mentally prepared to come back on the field in the second half and more focused,” NYC strength and conditioning coach Mick Reid said.

“Half time for some sides is a good thing while for others it’s a bad thing.

“Lately it’s been a bad thing for our guys.”

This week the NYC Knights have been astutely reviewing vision from the game to identify areas to improve when they face the Sharks.

“We are set to focus on edge on edge and our defence,” he said.

While the side is focused on the game at hand, there’s sure to be an urge to earn a victory after last year's clash which saw a late try by the Sharks result in the match being drawn.

“There are still 11 or 12 guys that played in that game last year, which was down there.

They scored on the bell, which was disappointing,” he said.

“We led well and they came back at us.

“But we haven’t spent much tome concentrating on them, we just have to fix our own game.”

The NYC Knights are managing a number of injuries that have plagued the team for the last few rounds

“We have a couple of players coming in and a few guys who are in experienced, but we’ll get them up to speed,” he assured.

“It will be good to get a full side together again, until then it’s just a juggling act.

Yet, Reid is confident the Knights will bring their A-game and will come up with the goods on Friday.

“I think that with what we’ve done so far in the first half, we get out to a good lead and hang on,” he said.

“I think if we are a little bit more steel in our defence in the second half then we should get away with it pretty convincingly.

“I think the boys are focused this week and we have the kind of resolve to win.”

    Where it will be won:
    With the forwards

“It’s always won in the forwards because they set the tempo and set the defence,” Reid said.

“We are always striving hard to make it easier on our backs.

“When our forwards are going forward really well, it’s a lot easier for our backs to punch holes in the defence and have freedom in scoring tries out there.

“Our main emphasis will be in the ruck and edges, so our backs have the freedom to do what they like to do naturally.

“We have some big boys there so we will look at using them to our advantage.”

6-0 to the Sharks after 5 minutes.

    - - - Updated - - -

Very odd side for the Knights.

4 forwards on the bench with Tyrone Amey debuting (our best forward from Ball in 2014 - a prop).

Looks like Levi will have to play long minutes - like 80.

    - - - Updated - - -

Lamb scores a try and Donovan converts.

    6-6

We are lucky to have two goal kickers who both seem to kick at 80% or better.

I notice Yates is listed as captain. Levi won't like that, but Yates is a natural leader for this team.

10-6 to the Knights after 28.
Try to Birch in the corner.
    Donovan missed the goal.

Glad to see Amey in the side. I thought he'd be starting for us in Round 1 but King and Saifiti have been awesome. He should be a mainstay in the side from now.

12-10 to the Sharks on 39

One of those guys on the bench must be going to play some hooker, and it won't surprize me if it's Amey. I've never seen him play hooker, but he has some passing skills.

rain is falling - 2 minutes to go - we just need to hold the ball, but who knows if that will happen.

    FT: Knights 22 (T: Lamb, Birch, Donovan, Stone, G: Donovan 3/4) - 18 Cronulla

That was a lot harder than it should have been.
Cronulla are 16th and lost 68 - 6 last week to Penrith, who we have beaten.

You mean Roosters? Panthers played cowboys last week.

Roosters have got some quality players in that side, not sure what the reason is for their slow start to the season before last week's big win.

Can Levi last 80 mins? He has proven to be a bit of a cry-baby over the captaincy. Pity two of the top forwards have been lost, one to the Doggies and one to the unknown.

    NYC Knights secure late win

    Fri 10th April, 06:55PM

The NYC Newcastle Knights beat the Cronulla Sharks 22-18 at Remondis Stadium on Friday night, showing nerves of steel to score the winning try with less than three minutes to play.

Brock Lamb was again a standout for the young Knights, scoring a try and laying the platform for another with a crafty line-break.

2014 SG Ball Players' Player Tyrone Amey made his NYC debut for the Knights from the bench while Fuaimamao Uta replaced Brodie Lam on the left wing.

The young Sharks looked set to score a try in their first set, but halfback Jack Cogger intercepted a Jayden Brailey ball to be held up in goal.

There were no defensive heroics in the following set though, as Sharks captain Anthony Moraitis crossed over in the left corner.

Jamayne Isaako did well to steer the kick between the posts from an acute angle, giving the home side an early 6-0 lead with only six minutes played.

On the back of a classy 80-metre set the Knights posted their first points, Bradie Smith offloading for Bryce Donovan to break through the line and give Brock Lamb an easy try near the uprights.

Donovan added the extras to make the score 6-6 with sixteen minutes played.

The Knights looked close to scoring again four minutes later, Fuaimamao Uta breaking down the left and hurling the ball back in field for Danny Levi to cross the line, but the touch-judge ruled that Uta had gone out of play before delivering his pass.

The left side was proving to be effective for the Knights and in the 27th minute they scored their second, this time via centre Josh Birch.

Donovan was unable to convert from the sideline, keeping the score at 10-6.

With two minutes left in the first half the Sharks came close to scoring with Brailey making a nice run from dummy-half, but interchange forward John Leger dropped the ball with the try-line begging.

The Sharks had time for one more attack though, and following a scrum ten metres out fullback Ryan Cummins made the Knights pay for some sloppy defending. Isaako again did well to convert, giving the Sharks a 12-10 half-time lead.

It was the Knights who scored first points in the second half, Lamb literally creating something out of nothing when he dummied his way through the Sharks defence 20 metres out from his own line.

With defenders closing in he passed on to Donovan, who scored beneath the uprights.

Donovan converted his own try, giving the Knights a 16-12 lead with thirty minutes left on the clock.

The Knights were close to scoring again in the 59th minute, forward Jacob Saifiti weaving his way through the line only to lose the ball when he collided with one of the uprights.

The home side made them pay two minutes later, Daniel Liddicoat capitalising on a dropped ball from Donovan to score left of the uprights.

Isaako made it three from three with his conversion, pushing the Sharks back in front with an 18-16 lead.

Both sides continued to push for the decisive blow, and with five minutes left to play the Knights secured themselves a scrum ten metres out.

Luke Yates looked to clamp down on a Cogger grubber, but Sharks fullback Cummins managed to palm the ball out of play.

The Knights had a second chance from the line drop-out and they came up with the goods, interchange forward Ben Stone bursting through to score right of the goalposts.

Donovan converted, giving the Knights a hard-fought 22-18 win.

    SUMMARY

    Newcastle Knights - 22 (T: Lamb, Birch, Donovan, Stone, G: Donovan 3/4)

    Cronulla Sharks - 18 (T: Moraitis, Cummins, G: Isaako 2/2)

    Match Analysis:

The NYC Newcastle Knights will draw on the desire and toughness displayed in the back end of last week’s two-point win when they face the Parramatta Eels on Sunday.

According to team manager Craig Smith it’s this determination and execution he expects the Knights to dish up from the outset of the match at Hunter Stadium.

“It was a hard fought game with slippery conditions against Cronulla. We didn’t start well which has been a bit of an issue for us over the last four weeks,” Smith said.

“We played a tough brand of football completing eight out of eight sets in the last 20 minutes to snatch a victory at the end with a two-point win.

“The pleasing part about it was how the boys were able to respond and dig their own way out based on effort and work their way towards a victory.

Yet the gutsy game didn’t come without cost.

Hooker Danny Levi (shoulder) and Jacob Saifiti (knee) have come away with injury concerns joining Ben Stevens (rib cartilage) and Braden Robson (sternum) who were sidelined from previous rounds.

“We’ve named a larger squad this week and will do fitness tests Saturday morning to finalise our squad,” he said.

“There may be a couple of new faces in there.

“Our depth will be tested in a couple of positions but we’re fortunate enough to have versatile players in Bradie Smith who can play back row or centre for us and Jack Kelly who could cover at hooker for us.

“Even with possible personnel change we are confident we have the depth.

“We finished off the last week of football playing a tough brand of football in trying conditions.

“If we were going to script into what we were going to do this weekend the way we finished last week is how we want to start this week.”

Where it will be won: Execution

Smith says with the conditions this weekend predicted to be wet and slippery again, the Knights will need to stick to their game plan.

“We are at home, so I’d like to say there would be a little bit more intent about how we go about things,” Smith said.

“It will be about completion, kicking and the organisation of your two halves.

If you look at that in terms of a marker, we’ve been completing quite well over the last coupled of weeks and we have two of the best halves in the country playing on our side.”
