NRL General Recruitment and Retention

Yeah I do not rate AJ at all but the Bears are in enough of a pickle to where I thought Corey Horsburgh, who I think sucks, was a good signing for them, and AJ is the same. We're in "at least he's (name a few okay attributes)" territory with their signings. At least Corey is big and has a motor. At least AJ is quick & very fit. Etc.
 
Ray Stone is retiring at the end of the season due to persistent injuries. I believe he'd originally signed with the Panthers. Good on him for putting his health ahead of extending his career, but I would have liked to have seen what Cleary could have done with him.
 
Gus got all the hype and credit for building Penrith but Garth Brennan was the one really building up the pathways and Gus had to leave before Penrith really became the Penrith they are now.

Also sounds like AJ Brimson is going to end up there. So that's another $1.7 millionish of their cap invested in the back 5.

The tax free salaries are said to be this massive incentive which means they can get whoever they like but they're not behaving like it. Chammas is literally just throwing money at any player with a reasonable profile who indicates he wants to go there.

Fullback: Brimson 900K
Winger: Johnston 300K
Centre: Lomax 750K
Centre: Manu 800K
Winger: To'o 650K
Five-eighth: Luai 1.2m
Halfback:
Prop: Lees 500K
Hooker: Watson 500K

Estimates but they are now coming up on half their cap space gone with seven players signed. Two outside backs who'll be doing the transition from rugby back to league. Brimson is not a top 10 fullback in the comp getting paid like he is. Luai not a top 10 five-eighth in the comp getting paid like he's #1.

I'm not quaking in my boots just yet.
 
Manu will also be 32 by the time the contract begins. Politis must be filthy with him considering he said to him he'd only go back to League to play for the Roosters.

I heard Brimson is on $900K per year at the Titans.

PNG are trying to get Titans to chip in $200K per year. Not sure where that has landed. Either way, 900K for Brimson is massive overs
 
That's a lot of NRL experience they have signed.

I'm surprised they haven't signed any Fijians yet.
The largest ex-pat community in PNG is Fijian - usually ex military guys working as security.
The gated community for the team will probably have Fijian security.
I'd have thought Fijian players would fit in very easily.
 
This is what I've been saying; IDK why people are worried about the Chiefs.

They're going to pay a lot of money for older blokes looking for paydays. Yes, they might have a good initial season, but it's going to fall apart real quick if they don't have a strong core of PNG players, especially when those financial incentives run out....even sooner if living in the compound isn't managed exceptionally well.

I disagree. POS had plenty of old heads at the Phins when they started, and they've been competitive, but he also had a stack of young up-and-coming talent to build on while those older blokes established a bridgehead in the NRL. It's the younger talent that's taken the Phins to their first final series.

PNG Chiefs? More like PNG Elders.
 
Yeah and the old heads at the Phins were mostly there short term as culture setters, the big longer term deals went to younger guys. Pretty sure Kaufusi is the only one of those earlier older player signings still there and he's transitioned to the kind of role Friz plays for us. All their starting forwards this weekend besides JMK are under 30.
 
Article about the nrl not registering a contract for Hudson Young at the chiefs for 900k when he has been offered 1.1 by the raiders. In real terms that would leave Hudson about 300k out of pocket. Would he have a case to take the nrl to court?
 
It's a bit silly that the NRL say his market value is 1.1 seeing Canberra is the only club to make an offer so far.

I think 1.1 for young is overs but seems to me the NRL are trying to stop a problem they created with the tax free PNG money and 'lower' offers.
 
I don’t believe so, the salary cap auditor has discretion over these things & one of the criteria is the competitive balance of the league. As long as that discretion was exercised reasonably, I don’t think a player has a case.

Dumb from PNG though, I would rather pay Hudson Young $1.1 million than $750K for Lomax (or $1.2m for Luai for that matter). Given who their five-eighth is they could really use some playmaking and creativity from an edge forward.

Good, no one should be getting 'less' then what they think they should get just because it's the Chiefs.
