Toohey's News

I'm with you Frank with Best at the vacant wing spot. Others have to earn their positions. As does Obi in my book.

Toohey says in the start of his article that only 7 players are assured of a spot at this stage.
I think a lot will change when the trials start.

Plus Moga is looking fitter than I have seen in years
Unfortunately, I'd have to worry about the 3 ACL reconstructions. It's a pretty horrible Injury. Might have had a very different career path if he never torn it. Maybe even SOO.

I'd go with best.

I've had a bit of a read of the broncos and cowboys forums. The cowboys seem to be frustrated that tuala never got more if a crack in first grade and wish he was staying. Broncos seem happy shibasaki is off their books and spoke a lot about dropping the ball and bad defensive decisions.

Yeah well the dogs forum said that Klemmer could,nt run the ball could,nt pass or tackle and was a **** player . So I wouldn't worry too much about what they say .

Basically the Toohey article said the players assured of a spot in the 13 are;
1 Ponga
2 Lee
7 Pearce
8 Klemmer
9 Brailey
11 Fitzgibbon
12/13 Barnett

He also said Best had made a very strong case for inclusion at centre, and Shibasaki could be the "surprize" selection.

that means less than half the final 17 have secured their spots so far.

Big change to the previous few years. I think the round one 17 was locked in before pre season started last year, except for 1 or 2 bench spots.

You might be right. Time will tell I guess. A few quotes from the forum:

"Unlike when the broncos bring someone in from qcup they look like a new born giraffe walking for the first time. (Shibasaki)"

"A busted kahu is better than Shibasucky"

"Shibasaki is putrid"

And then if you go to the cowboys forum you get things like:

"I echo the calls on Tuala. Has a lot of promise and I believe the potential to one day be a rep centre. Someone, somewhere should have overruled Green's decision to let him go (looking at you Peter Parr)".

I seen an article through the week saying who they thought would be the best value signings. Tuala was one of about 8 mentioned.

Who actually calls the shots at the Cowboys over who stays and who is responsible for all the players lost over the years? Is it Parr or is it Green?

Parr does all the recruiting but I believe Green has a big say on who he wants.

Tuala has been a top prospect for years now and in my opinion the better centre in U20’s to Ramien. They were the two standout centres of their age group.

Reported by the well placed poster on the Cowboys forum that he had a bad attitude last season. I personally wouldn’t of blamed him as Green in my view stuffed him around throughout his career in FG while giving obvious plods a better go despite not delivering.

He is also much much better then Shibasaki.

Fair enough, from what I remember reading Thurston's book it seemed like Parr was a bit part in his contract(s) negotiations at the time with the Cowboys so wasn't sure if that had changed at the present/more recently.

So you reckon he's the type of guy who the coach should say 'this is your position, go out there and nail it' and let him do his thing, I take it. Guess we'll see how preseason goes.

Yea before Green arrived it was all on Parr. The players love him and the main guys like JT and Scott would say he was a big reason they stayed. With Green now it seems he has a big say to Parr as to who he wants.

Give Tuala the season at centre and watch him shine by the end of it.

I think he normally plays left center? Does anyone have a take on how these guys would go on different sides of the field?
2. Lee
3. Tuala
4. Best
5. Hunt

Reckon that's an option or not really? Maybe Shabasaki is getting first crack because that's the side he normally plays on?

Going off last year, Hunt looked way more suited to the centres and if memory serves me right threw plenty of try-assists.
Unless there's a better option at centre I'd be happy to keep him at 3 or 4 playing inside Lee or whoever ends up replacing SKD.

Personally Hunt would be one centre and Tuala or Best or whoever outside him ..

Again lucky you ain’t a selector. If you saw Tuala on the wing last season you’d know a reason why he was moved on. He ain’t a winger and never will be.

Left centre. It’s where he carved up the U20’s with a certain someone feeding him balls at fullback. Surely you’d be able to figure out who that person was.

I'd have hymel hunt at right centre. Tuala at left. Best to play a bit more Reggie's till he forced his way in. Moga is probably the dark horse who will have a rd1 spot. Might not keep it or will end up injured the poor bugger. Eddy Lee for left wing, Right wing I dunno.

Maybe its a fight for the centre spots which is a good thing but imo Hunt plays his best footy at centre ..
If Tuala can out play him then that's good for the team and im all for it .
If he out plays Hunt he will be playing good footy and that's what we need competition for spots .
