Official: The Wests Group buy the Newcastle Knights

Great news. Hopefully it is a land slide yes vote.

Also good to know we will all find out Tuesday next week, rather than a bit of a longer wait until they collate the results etc. Buy the Newcastle herald paper on the Tuesday or Wednesday and frame it, a monumental day for the club.

I'm surprised that virtually everyone is voting yes. It is the way it should be, Wests are a club formed to promote rugby league and the best way they can do that is own the Knights.

Thankfully member's fears have not come true.

I don't believe it was possible under the structure pre-Tinkler days, Battler. Wests tried to go that way with the Mariners and we saw what happened and they could not have stood enough candidates to win a majority as there were REAL NRL board members appointed to the Board.

Could only come about after the Board signed the Club over.

It's kind of amazing that it's taken until 2017 for the one and only logical ownership structure of the Knights to actually come to fruition.

I'm genuinely excited for the near future of our team.
Now that clubs will get 130% funding on top of the salary cap, it means owners won't be haemorrhaging money like they have in the past. I think that's why Wests see ownership as more attractive now compared to the last 10-20 years

I doubt the 130% was a big factor. I think the bigger factor was up until now they have been happy sitting back, as the Knights were not in danger of ceasing to exist. Now, that is real possibility.

The 130% deal is great, but who is to say the next TV deal doesn't cause a re-negotiation of that agreement.

Honestly I've lost count how many times over the last 15 years that the Knights were apparently close to folding or relocating, Tinkler used the same marketing campaign. It's always a massive beat up to suit someones agenda

Previously I would agree. The NRL are not immune to making idiotic choices, like punting Souths.

I would not put it beyond them, if they feel our team is not viable, to relocate us. They own us so we have no say in it, if we could not find a buyer, the NRL do not want to, nor do they appear to be financially viable, to prop us up forever. At some point, push must come to shove.

It would never happen. It just wouldn't make sense to relocate from a rugby league heartland like Newcastle (4th highest crowd avg after 3 spoons, population of 550k) to a place like Ipswich which would never achieve the same support, regardless of dollars. And the Knights did have other interested buyers, the NRL just didn't think they were a good fit (understandably, they were hanging out for Wests). If any club is forced to relocate it will be Sydney club

Maybe he has been told by Wests he would be moved on, thanks for your service and ll that etc.

Once Wests take over Matt loses half his role, and maybe a pay cut comes with that.
He is basically a glorified football manager if Wests take over all the financial dealings, which they will. He won't be dealing with sponsers, stadium management etc etc.
