2017/2018 Knights Player signing speculation

Not really good numbers for Scott in 2016, Dan Saifiti was 105m 25 tackles from 40 minutes a game in his debut year.

Regardless, that's not the point. He's in decline. Full stop. If he plateaus out at 2016 numbers that's all fine and dandy, but if the slide continues he will be Dave Fa'alogo in 2018.

Those are great numbers for a guy who only plays 50 minutes,

If starling gets anywhere near that we are calling him a world beater

You are exactly right. They are great numbers, I totally agree

What I am concerned about is the trajectory of those numbers. Because if the trend continues even slightly--they won't be great numbers. And certainly not for 800k

What part of that argument is unfair?

Having said that, he is all class and has been the best prop in the game for the last decade. So I'm happy to wait and see what happens this year

Ill say one more fact for u to mate,

Gallen is a hog... he tucks the ball under his arm and runs thats it.

Scott is like tolman/graham, chases the play.... puts pressure on the kickers runs to the line and pass out the back once the D has compressed on him runs decoys and leads the way from kick off to full time.

Granted 800k is huge money

Ponga is getting the same after 2 nrl games on the wing..... ur happy as chit with that gamble.

Scott is proven.

By your own figures slots in 2015 and 2016, more games sure, but metres gained fell by nearly 50m and tackles by nearly 25%. I think Scott would be a good buy if we got him this year, but not at the money he wants, maybe $400,000 as he has pretty severe neck problems. By those figures 2017 will not be as good, and without Tamou ..... who knows?

You could factor in the rise of Taumololo and the fact he didn't have to lead from the front so to speak.

Scott has always led from the front just getting older, tireder and a bit slower. I would love him this year but not 2020.

Why are we comparing the decline of an older player to a convicted drug cheat?

Matt Scott
2014 - 20 games 175m 28 tackles
2015 - 25 games 138m 27 tackles
2016 - 23 games 126m 22 tackles

Definitely not in decline.

How can you put declining stats then claim "not in decline" when you literally just posted his numbers which slope ???

He was being sarcastic because it is so obviously showing a decline

Total speculation. First you appeal to stats. And then when the stats don't support your position you create a theoretical scenario to explain away what is so obviously shown in the stats. That is being inconsistent. The fact is he is getting older and less effective. How can you possibly refute that?

And Ponga is the best player under 20 years of age to have debuted in the last 10 years who plays a key role in FB. And he is on 650k approx. Scott is an injury effected 32 year old prop who has shown a noticable decline in form over the last couple seasons... so yes, Ponga represents great value in comparison

Hold the phone,

U dribbled about Gallen... i proved u wrong.

I neve used stats for Scott............ i know what we will get from him.

You proved incorrect my statement that Gallen showed a decline in form. Yes. And the stats supported your position.

That is not the same thing as proving incorrect my primary claim that Scott is a prop in decline. Isn't that what we are debating here? Please don't be so distracted. I wrongly used Gallen as an example to support my point when I shouldn't have, but that takes nothing away from the original point:

Scott is a prop in decline and the stats support that position

I'm not fussed if we get Scott or not, he is a great player, but age and a tough career have started to catch up with him, not value at his asking price, and how will he pull up after this season, not worth the risk.

When you purchase a guy like Scott you aren't just purchasing on field quality it's off field too he is a well known well liked player and the fact he plays for Australia is likely to attract third parties

Ive said it bwfore, if some portion of that 800k is third party cash, then I'm infinitely more comfortable with the deal

Because I do agree. I think irrespective of what we're paying him he will be great for us. I dont think he will be the prop he is now. But he will still be huge for us

Remember we were the club paying mamo 300k a year and kade Snowden got a pay prise under hagan and stone so imagine he was already on 400k thanks to tinks you could only think he was on about 450k when he resigned arguably Scott is a better player than Snowden ever was

Mate i reckon Snowden was an underrated prop! Haha. And Im not taking that position to serve and argument against Scott

Snowys numbers were always massive. He was a top 5 metre eater for props in the comp every year from about 2010 until 2015. And he would make 30 plus tackles a game. Granted he had his detractors, but he was underrated imo. Single handedly carried our pack for a few years

I agree with that but Snowden was over paid,
I still can't believe a guy like stockwell is on 350k hagan should be sent to Cessnock jail as punishment because that's a rort. 600k to 800k isn't a hell of a lot these days for a top line prop. Did you guys know we were paying Wes 400k a year too when he was here that money is crazy for a guy like him

It is all so absurd that's it's actually funny

Stone and co were absolutely taken advantage of by player agents who set upon the clubs management like lion on deer

Like I'm suprised they didn't star in a sitcom called "stoned"

I'd personally be stoked if Scott signed here however I'd rather it be a 2 year deal with the option in the clubs favour for a third if he starts declining physically. Would attract more TPA's, give younger blokes like Saifiti's, King, Pauli etc someone to learn off, add much needed big game experience and grunt and even with his recent run of niggles he still gets through a decent amount of work in both attack and defence.

i believe thats exactly what we are offering. 2yr deal with option of 3rd in our favor

Mooney seems to do his homework.
He signed some guys at Cronulla, like Luke Lewis, who I thought were past it, but they came good and were worth the money.
If he thinks Scott is still worth big money, he will have looked into it very carefully, and is probably right.
