The pre-season 2026 thread

I think a team with the highest upside we could see would be 1. Ponga 6. Sharpe 7.Brown, 9. Smith 13. Crossland. I believe that’s the best way to get our best players all on the field at the same time. i feel like our forwards are really weak, i don’t think Frizell is a great lock and Phoenix would provide us a lot of value there.
 
Been watching some short super coach videos. Most are picking Trey Mooney in for front row position. Obviously for value for money and potential upside.
 
Hollbrooks comment about Sharpe not playing wing and in the 13, has got me thinking he will play 6 or 7 and Sandon will be on the bench. At full strength I guess this is the best way to fit everyone in. I say Sandon will come on after 20 into hooker.

True but at the same time, Sandon did say 7 was the absolute dream and that’s what he wants.

It’s gonna be hard to guess this team sheet until round 1
 
We paid more for Sandon as we wanted him to consider hooker, would not surprise me if he played the position we paid him more to play
 
Sandon is playing 7.

Whether its week 1 or week 4. Sandon will be the halfback.

I reckon all this chat about Sharpe is just theatre by Holbrook. Sharpe probably playing FB round 1 anyway. It allows him to establish in Sharpe the mentality and expectation of a key member of the spine, while he pushes him out to the edge or to 14.

I hope we dont see it, but theres some chance Holbrook plays musical chairs initially, bringing Smith / Sharpe into the halves during the game.

I was watching the SG Ball trial video on the weekend and thought Sione Haukinima is looking so much like Trey Mooney it isn't funny.
He played Mathews last year and was said to be 120 kg and was flying down from Qld to play. He only came off the bench and played short minutes, and looked like a man amongst boys. This year he started in number 8 in the Ball trial and looks like he's dropped at least 10 kg and maybe more. As I said, 17 year old with Trey Mooney vibes. Rips in.
 
If you asked each player what number they would want on their back it would be:

Crossland - 9, Smith - 7, Brown - 6, Sharpe/KP - 1

Which is why of course we might see Crossland - 13, Smith - 9, Brown - 7, Sharpe 6, KP -1

#8 was Devante Hurrell-Epati, a new signing from NZ. Only just started watching the trial now but Haukinima looks to be on the bench to start.

They were both on towards the end of the game and they'll be hard to tell apart from the stands, although Haukinima is a bit bigger and has longer hair, and still does too much walking in backplay I'd say. Hurrell-Epati is a harder worker and Haukinima runs harder.

I think the entire SG Ball squad could be anything this year.
POS has brought in a lot of great prospects and our Matts side last year made the grandfinal and were only beaten by a Warriors side that is basically a NZ under 17s and has hardly been challenged by anyone in their 2 years in the comp.
We have also brought in a great development coach in Mat Lantry.
We used a lot of players in the trial V the Titans that ended up 2 tries each, and I think Lantry will have learnt a lot from that game.
No team list from the game, but a heap of players put in great efforts.
The number 11 for the Titans was another we will see more of in the future. POS should make him an offer.
