NRL Round 18 - Raiders V Knights - 4:05pm Sunday 7th July - GIO Stadium Canberra

Just finished watching the game.

Wasn't that a game of 2 halves. Fast free flowing first half with mostly great handling. Then an error ridden bludger.

Poor young Pryce tried well but had a few ok champ moments

Glad we won

Few teething probs today will .. but kids got potential!

That was atrocious. Braileys decision making this year has been awful. It used to be one of his strengths. Does Hastings play away from KP deliberately?
I noticed this pre-injury.
It was around the time Hastings was dropped and fighting etc and something I just always noticed since.
I’m not sure if KP is calling for it every play and Hastings is just boy who cried wolf-ing him. Or if Hastings was kind of sick of KP and proving a point or thinks he knows better.

That said, if Ponga is screaming for it, defence could be compensating and leave some space on the opposite side. But I doubt it every play.

A lot of teams are only letting players who are good at challenging for a high ball have a go. Most guys are rubbish at it and just give away penalties or knock on.

We have thrown Pryce in the deep end, so we have to expect he is going to struggle to play quality NRL level football for 80 minutes week in and week out at this stage of his career.

In truth I have been surprised he hasn’t been completely overawed and struggling more.

We’ve also had a very unsettled squad for the past several weeks with no cohesion or consistency in the combos to build some structure around particularly around a spine and forward leader….and yet we have continued to win ugly?!

We are still going to struggle to make the 8 or put a dent in the competition, even if we get there this year.

But, if we do keep the core of our emerging playing group (Ponga, Leo, Best, Sharpe, Crossland, KPP, Pryce, Lucas, Gamble, move on a few others, get some time to grow and click as a group, our next 2 to 3 years might be the best we’ve had since our last premiership 🤔

Definitely missed Crossland today and my question is, if you are going to kick to the same wing every sixth tackle and not contest the kick why wouldn't you run the ball a few times, chance your arm and even if you are caught with the ball what's the difference?
Not saying it is a bad idea, but the difference is it gives the opposition one extra tackle.

Was a hectic crazy game with us handing them back many chances, tipped Raiders, happy to win but so stressed at game end. Ponga was worst game he has played, mistake ridden but he will be better next one, Tuala was his usual self till injured, Gags was all effort that try with Hastings pass was beautiful, Best was quiet but tip on for Marzhew pass was great, Marzhew all effort with ball, running hard, defence and positional play, effort, a bit lacking, Pryce was mixed some terrible passes, good defence, it will get better, Hastings, I like what he does, steers us around, creates space/tries but kicking is ordinary, suspect he has injury problem, Pryce kick for goal. DanS started strong but occasionally got lazy, Brailey very disappointed, poor choices, bench next week, Thompson very strong, put lots of pressure on both tackling and chasing bombs, KPP ok, but not quite what he was weeks back, please play him on the right. Friz always a big effort, never lets us down. Croker thought he looked good, more time please Obi. JSaf played very strong, made ground he is the better Saf. Jones big game, does the little things right, backing up, support play, dummy runs but his defence is best, saved a try by covering back. Lucas, always plays well, should be auto selection in 13 left side 2nd row or if injury in the centres. Sharpe, very good f/b but totally misused, no opportunity to use his talent.
This game was a mess due to poor selection causing problems with bench, we virtually played a man down due to Sharpes lack of game time and then used when situation was critical.
Not sure if Hastings play with Ponga was a ploy, using him as a decoy, or poor choices, hopefully it was my bad read but Ponga was badly in need of run.

That was a beautiful set play for Gags second. Almost worked against Penrith a couple of weeks back and executed beautifully today. Very hard to defend against unless the fb spots Gags moving across and sends extra defenders that way.
They ran it against the Warriors as well and was only stopped by a desperate tackle from CNK. Think they executed it better today because it really looked like the ball was going to KP

I feel like I want to cry after that, I think it's the release of emotion lol.
I just slumped in my seat when it finished and said, “holy ***t that was hard work to watch!” And my wife said, “I walked past two minutes ago and you looked like you were going to have a heart attack”

I had my ear phones on and I was just stuck there in a world of pain and horror, motionless and not saying a word. 🤣
