2021 NSW Cup

With the NSW Cup confirmed to be taking place in season 2021, I thought it’d be a good time to throw out some team list suggestions and discuss who could potentially make the step up from the Real NRL and Jersey Flegg (seeing as the Knights have pulled out of having a team).

We’re in a good position now with our depth more so than years past. There’s a little bit of youth and experience mixed together now and a good coaching staff by the sounds of it with O’Meley being a recent acquisition as well as Bobcat (mentoring role if I’m not mistaken?), Kostjaysn, Dureau etc.

1. Hodgson
2. To’a
3. Shibasaki
4. Sasagi
5. Young
6. Hoy
7. Crossland
8. Saulo
9. Randall
10. Sue
11. Momoisea
12. Jones
13. King/Mann (?)

14. Huth
15. Ma’anaima
16. Johns
17. Croker

There’s also players like Jaron Purcell, Daniel Ticehurst, Jack Cameron, Brandon Russell, Hayden Loughrey, Bayden Searle, Zac Hosking, Tevita Alifa who I believe would still be in and around the club possibly.

@Billy, what are your thoughts? I’d believe you’d know a lot more than any of us in regards to our junior systems.

It's really hard to know because players were all over the place in different comps.

Some guys who went deep into the preseason last year were Mitch Black (NSW under 18s hooker in 2019), Bayden Searle who played halfback for Dubbo in the Presidents cup in 2020 and Dylan Lucas (centre or 5/8) who played out the season in the real NRL.

I suspect we'll cut most of the older guys like Hosking and Alifa and bring in guys who would be playing under 21s if we had a team like Cooper Jenkins and Cal Burgess (both won the Presidents cup GF with Maitland).

Big Tom Baker last played for NSW in under 16s and would be in under 21s this year. I believe he had a really good year with Cessnock and was a big part of them making the grandfinal, but missed the grandfinal with injury. He is a giant prop, which seems to be what O'Brien likes.

Maile-J Townsend is a winger with big wraps on him and would be in under 21s this year. (I want him to play in a televised game so I can learn how to say his name)

I find it near impossible to name a team, but I suspect it will only be firstgrade squad members, development contract players and under 21s.

They may find a spot for Huth and Croker - I hope so.

If there are any photos of the first training session tomorrow we might get some ideas. From what has been said it will only be the younger and fringe guys for the first few weeks with the senior guys not starting till december.

News today that Wyong and The Entrance will join the Newcastle comp to make a strong 10 team comp.
Wyong and The Entrance are the traditional powerhouses of Central Coast RL and will be strong contenders.
With many of the Knights players from ages 20 on playing in the local teams in 2021, it should be the strongest comp in decades.

Central Coast was always a pretty strong competition.. Ahh the days when Woy Woy were on top. Lakes United had it all as their territory but nearly totally ignored them. When they did get around to picking someone from Gosford to play for Lakes in the Newcastle competition, can't remember his name, he declined so Lakes at him on the sidelines for the rest of the season.

Brandon Russell > Tweed Seagulls
Tevita Alifa > North Sydney Bears

Thanks for the update. It’s difficult to know what’s going on in the lower grades when there isn’t much being said by the club.

Lol far out, that lineup is close to the quality of NRL lineups we played during the Browny era. Really want to see Randall get a run off the bench for a bit, but will be hard for him to pass Mann and Watson in the pecking order

Good thing this is NSW Cup we’re talking about. :giggle:

No draw yet?
No, but they have said they will try to get 3 games on together at as many fixtures as possible, so when we play a NSW based side or Canberra, we should play their NSW cup feeder on the same day when possible.

There should be some exciting players in NSW cup - Young, Sasagi, Crossland, Shibasaki, Baker etc.

1 not named (probably McKenzie Baker)
2 Jacob Kiraz
3 Dylan Lucas
4 Dominic Young
5 Brayden Musgrove
6 Simi Sasagi
7 Kobe davis
8 Garrett Smith
9 Luke Huth
10 Matt Croker
11 jack Johns
12 Ben Talty
13 Zac Hosking

14 Liam Wilkinson
15
16 Jaron Purcell
17 Christian Ma'anaima

20 Dan Ticehurst
22 Harry Croker

You have to wonder what has happened to Mitch Black? There is a photo in the Herald in the article on Brailey that says it is from firstgrade training yesterday, and Mitch Black is the only young guy in the photo, so he is still training with the big boys.
Chris Randall is also not named anywhere. Maybe they have all the backup hookers wrapped in cotton wool somewhere till they see Brailey get through a game or two.

Only player who has played firstgrade is Jack Johns (2 games).
I think it's the least experienced side I've seen in NSW cup, but you could make an argument that every player has a chance to play firstgrade in the future. I just wouldn't bet on them winning any games soon.

If Crossland wasn't suspended I think that side would be pretty exciting, despite only having Johns and Crossland with firstgrade experience - and only a couple of games each.
I don't expect any wins, but all those guys have a lot of improvement in them still.
