Farewell to Sione Mata'utia

Owey

Sione has officially signed to play for St Helens according to the ESL. I think he'll go well over there and wish him all the best. Been here through some very tough times, and a great clubman, thank you Sione!!

Think it's fair to say the Matautia's did very well out of the knights.

I still lmfao off over them signing a contract with the Dogs.

Thank walking into our CEO's office confused over what happened.

Than us forking out $1-$1.4 million to sign 3 duds and a rookie.

Legit was it the most embarrassing moment in our history?

With Sione leaving, there are no more players from the Bennett era currently in our squad so it’s kind of an end of an era.

Great bloke and player. He will do very well over there. I wouldn't be surprised if he comes back in a few years as a top backrower.

It's just a shame that the coaches constantly changed his position and he played in some of the worst Knights teams.

Sione probably got some games where he played 80 minutes as a second row, but I honestly can't remember one. Even games where he started at second row he often ended up at lock or centre or somewhere else.
A season or two where he just gets to play the same role all game for week after week will let him get into a routine.
He'll be 26 or 27 when this contract is up and should be at the peak of his career.
Another stint in the NRL isn't out of the question.

Certainly can't fault his effort, just a solid player that wasn't really good enough to nail down one position and make it his own.

He will go well in the UK.

Sione might’ve been last one in the top 30 squad but boys like Fitz, King and Safitis played under Bennett in the years he was there (winning NSW Bennetts last year and Fitz and Safs making the squad the following, I think?)

Always gave his all and a real good club man. Lacked pace to play centre and lacked size to play in the forwards, however had a good motor to compete hard.

Sad to see him go but sadly he never really hit the heights we thought he would when he was killing in through the juniors.

A lot needs to go right for a player to be a top NRL player, and for Sione he just never got the breaks he needed.

I hope he does well for St. Helens they would be my favourite ESL side.

We made the NSWRL Grand Final in 2014, lost that and won the following year’s NSWRL GF against Wyong. (Same year we had the first one of three wooden spoons.)

Whatever one thinks of Sione, one could never question his courage nor his commitment.

Like a lot of PI lads, he matured early and was probably at his peak at 22. Strength conditioning when moved to the pigs did not do his speed and mobility a whole lot of good. Good luck Sione!

Looking at our side and I can’t help but feel we could really use him off the bench. Missed a few of the articles around when he left. Did we let him go to save on cap space or did he go for more money/opportunity? I guess also could have been a mixture of both
