The Newcastle Knights are on the verge of securing the club's most important signature in over two decades, with superstar fullback Kalyn Ponga agreeing to a new deal with the club.

The Herald has been told by sources close to negotiations that Ponga has opted to put his All Blacks dream on hold and will ink a $1.1m-a-season deal with Newcastle.

The Knights are finalising the length of the extension, which could be for as long as five years to keep him at the club until 2025.

An announcement on the deal, which will make Ponga one of the top five highest-paid players in the NRL, is expected as early as the end of this week.

The signing is a major boost for the Knights, who will now build the club's future around the Queensland State of Origin No.1. Ponga was originally contracted until 2021, with an option in his favour for 2022. He has now triggered that option and has upgraded and extended his deal.

Ponga's father Andre has been negotiating with the Knights for the past couple of months since the split with former agent Wayde Rushton, who also lost Latrell Mitchell as a client at around the same time.

Ponga was giving strong consideration to walking out on rugby league to pursue a potential spot with the New Zealand All Blacks in time for the 2023 World Cup in France, however the 22-year-old's desire to win a premiership with the Knights outweighed his rugby union ambition.

All Blacks legend Sir John Kirwan told the Herald in February that Ponga faced an uphill battle trying to crack it into an already established New Zealand team with just one season under his belt before the 2023 World Cup.

He still has time to go to Union when he's 26-27 and we will get our inevitable piece by Peter FitzSimons on how the NRL is on the way down and Union is on it's way up.

james hooper said on nrl360 last night that the deal is til 2027, and that its 5yrs after his current deal, surely thats not true. cant see him committing for that long.

If he did you’d think he would have a union clause in there for the 2027 (I think) World Cup. So maybe a reworked 5 year deal with the optional 2 extra years on top if he don’t decide to go to union then?

The saving grace for Newcastle and the NRL is that NZRU just don’t have the money to compete with what he is getting.

Not sure I understand the news report that says he signed for $1.1 million(AU$ 1.69 million) per season. The details of that extension are still being worked out, but it could be until 2025 so that will be a five-year extension worth about $5.6 million(AU$ 8.58 million).
What has he signed for $1.1 million American per season and if he was signed for 2021 and took up his option for 2022 then a deal to 2025 is really only a 3 year extension isn't it .

That's good, I now know not to believe that until it comes from the team or Baz.

Why? Loves the area, club is loaded, and we are going great guns. Also got all his mates here to boot.

People read too much into.

Would you like to play for the allblacks?

Sure who wouldn't it's a dream for anyone.

Biggest beat up ever, why would he want to go and live in a sh!!!thole like NZ voluntarily?

I don't doubt they will eventually get a deal done if that is what Kayln Ponga wants to do which by all indications it is.
But I doubt anything 'exclusive' and detailed in regards to contracts the media talks about just like the bogus Union clause for 2023 or whenever it was is factual until it's signed off on.

I also never bought into the overexaggeration from the media of the Union threat even with a taken out of context quote.

One of the things going our way could be the fact that his family love living here . A mate of mine said he was talking to the old man and he loves the life style here so that's got to help.

If your happy and things are working out and your making good money, why leave? History shows anyone chasing dollars or thinks they are worth more always get screwed.

Mitchell is an example. Pearce is an example of the opposite, shows a lot about his character really and I reckon a premiership with us will be more cherished than the Roosters one given the circumstances on how he got here.

Bird,Hayne, Dave Taylor, Ash Taylor, Sandow, Ramien, Idris, Blair, Foran(eels) Martin Kennedy. Milford, all chased bigger contracts. And flopped.

I can’t think of many that have paid huge dollars for a player and they’ve been worth it(besides staying in the team which is already working for them)
