Melbourne will want him. Blokes out of Melbourne have been talking about how good he is for years. I've been waiting for him to get his chance. I am genuinely excited it is with us. I really think he is a franchise coach like Bellemy and Robinson who will set up a culture of success here long, long term. Btw, I still expect a fair bit of inconsistency next year, but less as his reign goes on. And if these forums aren't the place for big predictions, where is?

Geez give the guy a chance first before lumping big expectations and predictions on him.

Us expecting big things from the bloke isn't going to effect his performance 1 iota. It's a bit different from our 18 year old half back reading everywhere he's the next Joey.

True, I guess those expectations on Siebold at the start of the year did affect him.

Ok, I'm gonna say it, for a rookie coach, I believe Obi will be a massive success. My biggest concern is Melbourne trying to lure him away in the next two years if Bellyache retires. However, I do believe that we will be in a position, after he has started to shape his own squad, with juniors coming through and a center of excellence, to be of at least equal standing as the storm as far as coaching attraction goes.

I think Jason Ryles will be the heir-apparent after Bellamy is gone. I suspect that part of the reason he turned down an interview with us was because he has a chance to take the reins in Melbourne soon enough.

That makes sense. Ryles seems to be on the rise.

Have heard similar things in regards to Ryles being close to the next new head coach in waiting whether it be the Storm or somewhere else. How fitting that a guy who was so penalty prone in his playing days ends up coaching a team who niggles and wrestles and is known to get away with it hah.

He is a well spoken, big unit who has a commanding physical presence, even Nelson Asolfa Solomonia would think twice before "Throwing down" on him.

Gotta say after watching the Obrien interview I like him and think he will whip us into shape . Hopefully he can make us mentally Rock hard .

My comments to my wife were along the same lines , I was left impressed by his directness and honesty.

Seemed like he has a set plan and is assembling a Coaching team to carry it out - The playing group will have to be prepared for the unexpected over the next couple of months as I sense he will be testing their metal and resolve in the face of challenges.

I guess that depends on how much he wants premierships in his career. If Melbourne comes knocking I wouldn't blame him one bit for leaving.

We have him for a while at least, hopefully he can continue the club on its upward trajectory,

All nice words from windscreens.

I'll wait until I see some backbone and grit on the field before I get too excited.

Last season hurt as a Knights fan more than the spoon years for me.

I'm with you there Kurriboy… I am excited by the pedigree of his apprenticeship and optimistic with the language to date but it all counts for nothing unless this translates on the field - I'm not death riding him but, at this stage, he is a novice head coach that needs to take the step up and make this team and club a formidable, long term Rugby League powerhouse that Newcastle deserves.

If all goes well, then he will be the drawcard coach that players want to play under and give us the capacity to be a club of choice moving forward

Even if he’s an epic fail as a coach, I give him massive kudos already for his efforts to build a team in the right way, from the ground up with guys who are in it for more than a paycheque.
I’d like to think we’ll give him more loyalty than the Titans gave Brennan if he doesn’t get immediate results, because I think both him and Brennan are/were trying to do it right.

A few head coaches hove won a premiership in their rookie season:

- Ian Walsh (St George 1966)
- Leo Nosworthy (Balmain 1969)
- Phil Gould (Bulldogs 1988)
- Michael Hagan (Knights 2001)
- Ricky Stuart (Roosters 2002)
- Trent Robinson (Roosters 2013)

No reason to doubt Obi's chances given his confidence in the roster and impressive apprenticeship.

Oh what I wouldn't give for a front row of Mark Sargent , Danny Buderus , The Chief . Klem and Daniel can play back row lol. We would win the comp for sure then and that's without even wishing Mathew and Andrew back .

Round one will tell a lot against the Doggies who will be hoping to make the eight. Talk earns zero NRL points and we have much the same top 30 as last season.
