Nathan Brown discussion

I wonder what this means for the Jayden Brailey signing and whether Ramien would commit to the club depending on who the coach is. Does he have a decent relationship with Woolf?

If Bennett can move on players six months into a contract and recruit/retain I'm sure Ramien (who is technically still contracted?) can renege and return in 2020? Again all hypothetical depending on the new coach.

I get that this 'mutual' parting was more to appease the Ponga camp which is fine but I think the Ponga camp were thinking long term with a potentially different coach months before it was rumoured recently on holding off on any contract negotiations.

While I agree this was probably a matter of when and not if it was laughable to read the media with their fake news of suggestions already thrown up. Will be fun watching the usual suspects pretend to have a clue what's going on, while the club has handled the departure pretty well not leaking out too much and keeping it well in house.

In regards to Brownie's future personally I doubt he will be a Head Coach in the NRL (certaintly worse around) but he will no doubt be in the office like some footy brains before him have been.

The type of coach we want is someone who is good at bringing on young and talented players.
Brown has been average at best at this.
Next year we should see Toa, Best, Crossland, Fermor, Hoy, Jones, Sasagi, Momoisea and possibly Huth, Croker, Russell, Searle and an outside chance at Ticehurst etc all playing reserve grade and if they get the right coaching, challenging for firstgrade. You can add guys like Randall, Hosking and Kiah Cooper as older guys that a coach who can develop players might get up to firstgrade standard.
If there is a David Waite style coach out there, he is the guy we need right now.
Even Ponga would benefit from that sort of coach right now. He is the quickest learner ever, and a coach who can teach skills will have a lot of fun working with him.

If Ponga does end up staying here in the longer term till he's in his late 20s type of thing and goes back into the halves at some point (after Pearce even) it would be interesting if the club would consider bringing back Joey or Matty Johns to be a halves coach, (if they are available) get him to learn under the right people. Both are sharp minds and teach players how to think as a half and playmaker, and aren't guilty of over coaching.

Pretty sure Matty has done some coaching with KP

Ponga, Lamb, Cogger and Meaney were all doing weekly sessions with Matt Johns last year, and all benefitted greatly.

Thanks guys, wasn't sure how often Matty was doing that, I thought it was more of a very loose casual whenever he has the time type of arrangement considering Matty always has time for the Knights.
I know he has other commitments and is/was involved with the Storm so not sure how travel logistics fit in with that and his work with Fox Sports.

I wonder how Levi would be going with a coach that actually coached him over the last couple of years.

Maybe he is no longer on the outer and may stick around now and fight for his spot. It was clear he and Brown did not get on, and that affected his performance and commitment at the club.

It's a very interesting situation, similar to when the HSG/Tinkler took over and a few contracts that had been agreed upon had been put on hold until a new coach was decided and the takeover was complete. I can see a similar thing would be happening now with Wests keeping a very watchful eye on everything. And it being a whole new ball game.

We have:
Brailey having agreed to a deal but not signed and announced/approved by the NRL?

- Guerra
- Gavet
- Levi
- Herman
On the outer

- Hunt
- SKD
Unsigned

- Ramien
Not technically released and still contracted? But exploring options

I'm not the most knowledgeable when it comes to coaches so I'm not really sure who would be a good fit  but preferably someone with experience and some kind of past success, someone who isnt afraid to give it to the team at halftime if they aren't showing passion in the Jersey and someone known for an attacking and aggressive style of football, the legacy and identity of Newcastle has always been the way they can blow teams away with their attack and put on an entertaining show, while they've also won many games on the back of their defence my point is it isnt what the club is most known for and with young players like ponga in the team you wouldnt want a coach who is going to put him in a box in favor of a more conservative strategic approach.

I am open to any kind of suggestion that isn't Shane Flanagan really.

Trust that Wests/Gards will due their due diligence

Kevvy has done a Darius Boyd and ruled himself out of the job haha

NRL 360 seemed to throw out a number of reasons Brown is gone so I would take them with a grain of salt, one he had a falling out with Pezet who is good friends with Gardner.

They also said it was Brown that resigned as his manager caught wind of an end of season review and Newcastle had already had talks with a few coaches.

Only guy worth listening to in regards to Knights mail is Baz.

Everyone else pretty much has no clue, as it has been proven time and time again in the past. Lots of dart throwing, even with the BS rumours linking the team to O'Brien/Fitz. And every journo copying that same rumour.

As if the team has made a short list that quickly, lol.

I thought I read somewhere a while ago that O'Brien had a clause that he couldn't leave for a number of years as the Roosters were sick of losing assistants. Having said that though I doubt Robinson would be the type of bloke to deny someone an opportunity like that.

Wests are good operators they would have something in place already.

What wrong with Flanno? Personally think he'll be ideal if he is allowed to coach next season.

The SMH has reported that O’Brien has a clause in his contact that he can’t take on a head coaching job in the NRL until 2021.

That he's a disgrace who got caught cheating in multiple ways, and then got caught breaching his suspension for cheating. Even Sharks fans are pissed at him for setting the club back and losing his son because of his suspension.

And when you take into the fact the Sharks cheated with peptides and breaching the salary cap over multiple years, it takes the shine away from his achievements there. The NRL was just too soft to throw the book at them like they should have (which should have happened to Manly too)

Besides the NRL have blocked it from happening anyway, not that the Knights were considering it, but glad it's case closed: https://www.nrl.com/news/2019/08/20/nrl-wont-allow-flanagan-to-become-browns-successor/

It amazes me that people think what Flanno did was acceptable.

I'm not saying what he did was okay or acceptable. But he would be an IDEAL coach for our young team, and think it will fit well
