High shot is laughable. If ash Taylor wants to dig into the line he is fair game. That is exactly what happened.

Injury update: Ponga return, Mata’utia discusses fracture

Newcastle Knights

Kalyn Ponga is poised to return from a hamstring issue this week.

The nib Newcastle Knights travel to North Queensland to play the Cowboys on Friday and according to coach Nathan Brown, the fullback is ready to return from injury.

"He should play," Brown told the Sunday Footy Show.

"He probably could've played at a real push this week bur he did a tough session at the captains run and (the training staff) are expecting he should play."

Meanwhile, Sione Mata'utia has spoken for the first time since suffering a fractured eye socket in Newcastle's win over Parramatta two weeks ago.

On the mend, the centre is due to have a follow-up with the specialist but is expecting to return to action before the season is over.

"It's a different one," Mata'utia told KOFM of his injury.

"It's behind the eye, above it. The bones that are sort of a bit fragile in there and easy to break.

"Thankfully it's a lot more positive than we were thinking. Hopefully in the next two or three weeks I'll be back instead of six weeks."

While the centre is sidelined for a handful of weeks, he's relieved the injury is not concussion related.

Having head a horror run with head knocks last year, Mata'utia has taken the latest set-back in his strides.

"No doubt in the backrow last year, a lot more workload and fatigue comes in pretty quickly," he said.

"At times I struggled with my fitness, therefore technique goes That may have been a cause to plenty of my concussions.

"I'm glad it wasn't a concussion. That was probably why I was stressed when I came off.

"It's worked out positive in the end. I've had a week off, we'll reassess my eye and hopefully I'll be back sooner rather than later."

Injured players and expected return dates:

Tautau Moga (ACL, Season)

Slade Griffin (Knee, Season)

Jacob Saifiti (Shoulder, Round 22-23)

Sione Mata'utia (Fractured eye socket, Round 22)

Kalyn Ponga (Hamstring, Round 19)

Round 20 injury update: Huge Mata'utia boost, Moga progress

Newcastle Knights
Mon 23 Jul 2018, 04:32 PM

Sione Mata'utia is likely to make a quicker than expected return to the field.

Sidelined with a fractured eye socket, the centre was initially expected to miss up to a month but nib Newcastle Knights Physical Performance manager Tony Ayoub revealed he could be set for an early return.

"He's going really well," Ayoub said.

"They (the doctors) said about three or four weeks but to be honest with you, he's tracking really well, he's had a couple of runs already. We're going to introduce him to some limited skills (on Tuesday) and we'll see what he's like.

"Next week (against the Tigers) is a real possibility. Even this week is not out of the realm."

Meanwhile, Kalyn Ponga is expected to make his return from a hamstring injury this Friday.

"He's ticked every box at the moment," Ayoub said.

"We had a decent run today and will follow it up with some skills tomorrow.

"He's confident and that's the most important thing."

Finally, Tautau Moga is gearing up to start straight line running.

"He's with the orthopaedic surgeon today (Monday)," he said.

"His range in his knee is coming along really well. His strength is starting to get up there.

"We're taking our time with him. We're stringing his rehab out so he doesn't get bored.

"Over the next two to four weeks, we'll really kick that up and then give him a break."

Injured players and expected return dates:

Tautau Moga (ACL, Season)

Slade Griffin (Knee, Season)

Jacob Saifiti (Shoulder, Round 22-23)

Sione Mata'utia (Fractured eye socket, Round 20-22)

Kalyn Ponga (Hamstring, Round 19)

Moga reveals return date, breaks silence after ACL injury

Newcastle Knights
Fri 27 Jul 2018, 06:11 AM

He's done four ACL's but Tautau Moga isn't a quitter.

Currently rehabilitating from his latest injury setback, the nib Newcastle Knights is on the verge of returning to running.

Since ruptured the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in his left knee during the Easter Sunday match against the St George Illawarra Dragons, the centre has hardly been cited.

But he's been working hard behind the scenes to ensure he returns better than ever.

"In Round 5, I'll probably be back. That'll probably be a year from there. Hopefully see how we go. Hopefully Round 5, that's the plan," Moga told the Our Town Our Team podcast.

Still only 24, Moga has had a horror run with injury.

Two ACL injuries early in his Roosters career halted his momentum before he started to gather steam in North Queensland.

Another ACL while with the Cowboys put him back in the rehab until before stringing some games together and joining Brisbane where he had an injury-free 2017.

Linking with the Knights this year, Moga was devastated after suffering a fourth season-ending knee injury.

Another set-back and shock to the system, the emerging Queensland Origin prospect has had time to come to grips with the injury and is focused on returning in 2019.

"Its been about four months now on the sidelines," Moga said.

"Its been 14 weeks since the op. It's gone pretty slow but we're getting there.

" ... two weeks after I did it people were calling but I didn't really reply back until a month later.

"Which was a bit rude but I just needed some time to myself.

"I was trying to think things over, trying to wrap it around my head.

"I had some downtime with the family. Get my mind off family.

"Going home to my little one, she brings happiness. Everything else just goes away."

While it's a long road back to the field, having the support of his family is 'the best feeling'.

Once he's given the all-clear to commence straight line running, the return becomes much easier.

"I just started leg weights," Moga said.

"I went and saw the specialist a week ago and he said everything is on track.

"It's about trying to get some strength in the legs.

"Hopefully that leads into running on the AlterG and from the AlterG to out on the field.

"I think I'll be running on the AlterG for two or three weeks to get some load into the legs and used to running again and from there it transfers out onto the paddock."

The Anti-Gravity Treadmill is something Moga is familiar with.

He's used it twice previously when rehabbing from a knee injury and feels the benefits of the technology but it's pulling on a pair of studs again which has him most excited.

"I'm just keen to wear some boots to be honest," he said.

"Wear some boots and run around."

Round 21 injury update: Watson's groin, Ponga's ankle

Newcastle Knights
Tue 31 Jul 2018, 11:26 AM

Connor Watson is poised to return from a groin injury.

Watson was ruled out of last week's game against North Queensland after lacking power in his running game, but nib Newcastle Knights Physical Performance manager, Tony Ayoub, expects him to face the Wests Tigers on Friday.

"He had a minor groin strain," Ayoub said of the No.6.

"He pulled up pretty good after the couple of runs he's had over the weekend.

"We expect him to take his spot. He's improving every day."

Meanwhile, Mitchell Pearce copped a whack to the face last week which saw him receive several staples to stop the bleeding.

"He's fine," Ayoub said.

"He just had a bit of a sore head. Unfortunately, he nicked a blood vessel. It was quite deep. You've got to give the kid credit, he's a tough young man."

Finally, Kalyn Ponga has been managing an ankle complaint for the last week.

He completed the game last week but didn't train with the team on Monday.

"He had a minor ankle sprain last week," Ayoub said of Ponga.

"He didn't train (on Monday). That was more precautionary than anything else, just to give him a bit of time off.

"Coming off the back of a hamstring injury, we thought it best to unload him and we expect him to take his place on the weekend."

Injured players and expected return dates:

Tautau Moga (ACL, Season)

Slade Griffin (Knee, Season)

Jacob Saifiti (Shoulder, Round 22-23)

Connor Watson (Groin, Round 21)

Kalyn Ponga (Ankle, Round 21)

Round 22 injury update: 'He's improved out of sight'

Newcastle Knights
Mon 6 Aug 2018, 05:26 PM

Mitchell Pearce will be named in the No.7 for the nib Newcastle Knights this week despite picking up a nasty cork to the leg on Friday.

Pearce failed to finish the game against the Wests Tigers but Physical Performance Manager, Tony Ayoub, is hopeful the skipper will be fit to face the Warriors in Auckland on Friday.

"He's traveling really well," Ayoub said of Pearce.

"The professional that he is, straight after the game, a couple of times of the night we got some physio into him and all the next day and it made the world of difference.

"He's improved out of sight. We could've probably trotted him out (on the training paddock) today. He was a little bit sore and his range wasn't quite where we wanted it to be but he'll take his place on Friday night."

Josh King failed to finish training on Monday due to a corked leg, but Coach Nathan Brown is confident he'll be right to play this week.

"He'll get a bit of treatment but should be okay," Brown said.

Meanwhile, Connor Watson has been sidelined for the past two weeks with a groin injury and isn't expected to play the Warriors.

Brown said he's unsure when the playmaker will be ready to return.

"We won't even name Connor this week, I don't think, so that's not going as good as we hoped unfortunately," Brown said.

"He and Mitchell together played five times for four wins and the other game Connor came off against the Roosters very early.

"We haven't had a real good chance to look at that combination ... I don't think Connor will make it this week. How much longer he's out for, I'm not too sure."

Injured players and expected return dates:

Tautau Moga (ACL, Season)

Slade Griffin (Knee, Season)

Jacob Saifiti (Shoulder, Indefinite)

Nathan Ross (Groin, Indefinite)

Connor Watson (Groin, Indefinite)

Jacob Lillyman (Abdominal, Indefinite)

Mitchell Pearce (Corked leg, Round 22)

Looks like JSaf won’t be back again this season, forgotten man. Would’ve been so much better than King right now.
