Tim Glasby announces his retirement

I said the idea of playing Guerra at Lock and Barnett as a bench middle player not Ese'ese at lock or Glasby

I have seen people mention Ese'ese at 13 and I know you have been a fan of playing both the twins with a big lock to start with so yes I have seen that.

But the idea of playing Guerra and Barnett both as middle players and buying a new right edge back rower hasn't been spoken of IIRC

There are a few good ones available like Jayden S'ua, Curtis Sironen, Shaun Lane and even Luke Lewis, for me if I were Brown I'd be at least giving Lewis a call and if he was keen to go another season I'd make him an offer and if he accepted I'd play him right edge and have Guerra and Barnett as middle forwards.

The other player who may become available is from our feeder club in Bondi, Ryan Matterson. He's had a big year and is clearly a NRL starter now, I doubt he wants to sit on the bench behind Boyd and Angus next year so he could get a release if we ask nicely again.

Always the option to move Sione back to the second row next year which looks likely with Ramien coming next year.

When we first looked like signing Guerra i said id want him at lock with Barnett on the bench, so totally agree with your thoughts now.

Before any of the trials started I thought it was gonna be

12. Buhrer
13. Guerra

15. Barnett

Back then, Buhrer was thought of as a starting player though.

Glasby is coming to play lock pure and simple.

There's no way to know that. Brown has always spoken very highly of Barnett as our lock & now we have Guerra there too. At the same time he is always talking about our huge need for front rowers & Glasby has played mostly prop in his career apart from a few games.

Say thanks next year!

Wally is calling for Glasby to be lock in SOO 2 or all is lost (one hopes). Why do you think McGuire trampled on Glasby's ankle in the last minute on Sunday?

Yeup McGuire stomped Glasby because Walters was going to drop McGuire for the Storm player

Makes sense

These days is there a differnce between prop and lock. 3 middle forwards and 2 edge forwards. Glasby will be a middle forward and if he wears 8 10 or 13 his role will be the same

Minor difference depending on the player and the club. I think it was discussed in the Tim Grant thread

This is the biggest misinterpreted thing in the nrl.

A props role is to be a big dominating player that can bend the line in attack while holding the line in defense for 18-25 minutes.

Locks role is to support those props ( covering in defense) or ( helping to make the yards )

Most if not all lock forwards are still the guy to balance the pack out in one way or another.

Some locks are meter eaters while the props keep the Defensive line solid.

Others are good at meters and Defense.

Others are very strong in defense but need strong ball running props to be effective.

Most of all a lock has stamina to go 60+minutes every week in which ever role he needs to play that best suits the plan/team.

So a good lock forward definitely depends on the side/props he is supporting in the middle

So your saying each pack needs a good balance in the middle, i agree. The dogs for example used to have tolman graham and klemmer. and for most part tolman was the "prop" and klemmer the "lock". Back to my point whatever position glasby is named in his role will be the same. Much like tolman playing the lock role from prop and klemmer being the aggresive forward at lock.

I think we are agreeing :/

Kinda agreeing, though not at the same time.

Tamou, Scott were good at meters and Defense so just needed a young eager guy at lock to complement them, Taumalolo was that kid, now Taumalolo is the game breaker in attack so Bolton and scott are the props to complement Taumalolo...

Look at every team mate, they try to balance the 8/10 with the 13, every team has faults in attack or defense in the middle so the lock is very much the guy chosen to fix that fault.

We already had this discussion in another thread.

The role the lock/prop plays almost solely depends on the players strengths/weaknesses and who the coach has to work with.

Sharks starting props have been Fifita and Prior all year with Gallen at lock. As soon as Gallen got injured, Flanagan went with Paulo lock who’s night and day different from Gallen who’s essentially a 3rd front rower. An up and down player with little skill. Paulo is a finesse ball playing forward. Their pack looked completely different with him in their those few weeks Gallen was injured. That lock position and his role had nothing to do with what the props needed or balancing the forward pack or whatever. Paulo got picked because he was next man up. He just played his game and didn’t try to be Gallen.

Same thing with Souths. The Burgess brothers have been starting prop all year. They’ve had older brother Sam at lock a good portion of the year, but when he’s been out or they’ve had other forwards out (Crichton for Origin), Seibold has started Murray lock, who again is a night and day different player to Sam. Has nothing to do with balancing the forward pack or what they need, it’s just next man up and they play to their strengths.

99% of the time that’s the go. As for Glasby, he can only do so much with the ball in hand, so whether he’s meant to be the big metre eater prop who’s bending the line or the hard working defensive lock to tighten up the middle – he can only be him. Wearing 8 or 10 won’t make anyone’s hit ups more impactful, nor will wearing 13 give anyone more stamina to play 60+ minutes and shore up defensive errors.

I mostly agree with what you said I just have the one point to throw in the mix.

With the way the NRL has restricted the squads etc you can’t always have a like for like replacement when someone goes down injured so you might just have to throw someone in who can do the job that’s on your roster.

If you had a big man like Gal or Sammy who can play big minutes and get through that amount of work, you wouldn’t have them on the bench.

You’re right, you can’t find an exact like for like replacement, that’s why it’s silly to say props/locks are named to balance forward packs and have big metre eaters and hard working defenders etc. Forward packs get shuffled all the time. Different combinations are used all the time. Players get injured all the time. You can’t predict anything except know the unpredictable will happen, then everything goes out the window. In an ideal world, sure, coaches would have their ideal mould of player/position, but in terms of what they actually have to work with and that particular players strengths/weaknesses, it’s a whole other story. I’m sure at least 90% of coaches would take either Taumalolo or Trbojevic as their starting lock regardless of what their props looked like and what the perceived “need” was in the forward pack.
