Knights keen on English prop

Newcastle Knights officials are having an extra close look at Wigan during their trip down under at the moment.

I’m hearing the Knights are keen on young Wigan prop Ryan Sutton for next season.

Sutton is only 22 - a baby in front-rower terms - but has already racked up nearly 100 games for the Warriors.

He made his debut in 2004 as a teenager and is big, strong and tough.

Sutton comes off contract at the end of this season and the Knights are definitely interested - as are several other NRL clubs.

We will be looking for a new prop new year and there would certainly be worse candidates out there- pommie forwards seem to do fine and he has a reasonable life expectancy in the game , barring injury
 
Yep, for the right price he could be a real score.

As a young player who hasn't been tested in the NRL there's a risk signing him to a long-term contract, but enticing anyone out for a short contract could be tough.
Maybe 2 years with an option for a 3rd in our favour on around $350k a season with performance based incentives?

I'll be interesting to see how he goes this season with his eye on 2019.

Guess that depends on how much he bends the defensive line. Don't need to be build like a rugby prop to do damage.
He's still young, there'll be plenty of opportunity to add muscle to his frame as he develops.

If nothing else, carrying a little less weight can help with endurance. If the number of interchanges is reduced which is a real possibility, that becomes more of an asset.

That could be true but personally i would rather we bought a Sam burgess or Andrew Fifita sized prop ...IMO D.Saifiti wouldn't have the impact he does if he was 103 kg ...
 
Know we have plenty in cap to spare but wouldn't like to spend a fortune on a untried prop when we really need a hard experienced one with 3-4 years left in him. Lillyman and Heighinton don't quite fit the job, probably no more than this coming season left in them. If price is right and can sign him for 2 plus our option then ok but we still need to be on the lookout for the right man with 2019 in mind.
 
I think on this place we need to worry less about $'s and just worry about the signings, Brown and Mooney have shown we don't over pay anymore (except ponga who may prove cheap at $600k and Pearce at a $1million which really when you factor in Ben Hunt is on the same is it overs?) It's not like Hages / Stone days throwing huge money at anyone to stay or come anymore.

I think we over spent on Ese'ese and Guerra, but im not sure its necessarily a bad thing. And its not as though our purchases are being driven by poor decisions. Both Guerra and Ese'ese were essential when we signed them and that arguably hasnt changed much
 
I don't consider Pearce on overs, Ponga is but he was the first signing to come to a wooden spoon club and apparently a future superstar so I get dangling that sort of carrot was required.

Very astute cap management since though.

I remember seeing Pearce has a base salary of 800k?? With incentives on top?

A manager once told me "in the public arena people only think they know what a player is on", so I will not even assume to guess who are on overs or unders, but before Guerra, Knights couldn't get anyone of any note, with his price came credibility and I think he sold himself short (cause he bought into Browns plan and liked what was ahead for the Knights).

Brown and Mooney don't appear to be the sort of people who throw money away without calculating the risks and reward.

I don't know that that's a good measuring stick. Market value is one thing, but clubs pay for what a player is worth to them. Dragons went all out on Hunt as he was the biggest halfback on the market & they wanted him badly so made sure he came to them. Cherry-Evans is on a huge contract, but isn't the highest on the list for halves, so doesn't mean every half that is better than him should be on more. Pearce is worth 1mil to us, to the Roosters he's worth less, a team with an established halfback like Thurston would only sign Pearce if he wanted to come for a massively reduced contract, but that don't mean the market value for halfbacks over all changes.
 
He can't have made too big an impression on the Wigan fans. The pommy fans often put up highlight packages of their players, couldn't find anything on him!
