Gagai decides on future

Mon 22nd May, 04:00PM

Dane Gagai has told Club officials he will depart the nib Newcastle Knights at season’s end.

Gagai joined the Knights in 2012, and has played 116 of his 122 NRL matches for Newcastle.

“We are obviously disappointed that Dane has decided to leave the Club, but we respect the decision he has made with his family,” CEO Matt Gidley said.

“Dane has been a wonderful player and ambassador for our Club over the six years he has been with us.

“He will leave at season’s end with our best wishes for the future.”

Gagai informed his teammates before joining the Queensland Maroons side in camp on Monday.

“We know Dane will give 100 per cent for the team before he departs us at the end of the year,” Gidley concluded.

A lot can change in 12mths mate, his wants for success for one... he may feel that it mite be 3-4 more yrs before we are a top 8 threat and his time may run out.

Im happy for him to make some big coin. stuck with us when no one in their right mind would have. Even with that still made state of origin. Good guy. But in saying that id like him to go now so that we can put someone knew in there. otherwise next year, same problem. starting the year with a center thats never played and is straight out of under 12s

Hindsight would suggest his been put at fullback knowing he wont be here next year and ponga will slot straight in.

that may be true but souths are on the downhill slide, imo he went for the $$ first and foremost.

All reports say that the money was pretty close from our end... not much in it! Ad the fact sydney costs twice as much to live in id say the money factor is not one at all.

Souths are far from going down hill... every team whom is missing there best attacking weapon is gonna struggle.

Id say ur on the money here! Wardle is doing well at centre defensively and can run a great line! Mad dog style imo

Still hoping we buy a big powerful centre tho... give me a 6'4-6'5 105kg guy please

With or without inglis theyve been on the slide since 2014, im not suggesting they are going to slide into our league but if gags was chasing success mostly and if rumours were true about other clubs chasing him he would of ended up in melbourne or cronulla

They have definitely been on a steady decline since the premiership. Inglis, while can still win a match when he's on is starting to get past it. They were gonna struggle with or without him in my opinion. Fortunately for Souths, they are a club that can easily shift their whole roster & salary cap in a season if Maguire comes under enough pressure.

I asked a mate that's a Rabbitoh if he was interested in a $50 bet last week. The wager was that Newcastle win a comp before Souths do. He couldn't say no fast enough

I'm glad he is going, but I respect his time at the club and how he stuck by us.

Can't blame him for wanting to go to a team that actually wins some games.

You can call it for the money, or the players there or whatever. I think he was just sick of losing.

Disappointing that's it's official, but at least he was man enough to stick it through the tough periods longer than the others did and he'll leave with no bad blood. Wish him all the best for the rest of his career, just not against us.

It's hard to imagine any professional athlete who wouldn't get sick of loosing unless of course you're Anna Kournikova who made millions along the way. Just maybe Dane doesn't see the light at the end of the tunnel like the large number of optimists among the Knights faithful. Good luck to him.
