No way do Feeney & Pearsall get re-signed without seeing how they go, neither has proven themselves to be a valuable player for us yet. Phythian has to prove he can just stay on the field before he gets a new deal & Pauli needs to prove he's not lazy & have a big year. If he has a similar up & down year to this year, then big question marks.

We have done that too long signing for big bucks sight unseen. Ask Hages how much the brothers cost us, rumoured a cool $1million. Just not worth that much for the four of them.

I think Brown will have to start signing guys based on how well they train in the pre season if he wants to get them cheap.
If we wait till late in the season to sign some guys because they are playing the house down, we'll have to get in a bidding war with other clubs, and end up signing all the guys who aren't setting the world on fire.

WOODEN spooners Newcastle are preparing for a multi-million dollar raid on premiers Cronulla.

In a move that will rock the game, the Knights have targeted Sharks stars Jack Bird and Valentine Holmes for 2018.

Both players are under contract to the Sharks for next season and will play out their term at the premiers.

But Newcastle has made the duo their top priority for the following season and will throw them long-term offers in the vicinity of $1 million a season each.

Bird had a sensational rookie season in 2015 and backed that up with another great year in 2016, helping he Sharks to their maiden title.

His ability to play almost anywhere in the backline makes him a valuable asset.

Holmes is also adept at playing several spots, and while he starred at wing for the Sharks, prefers to play fullback and is likely to be offered that spot by the Knights.

Under NRL rules, clubs were able to open talks with players for 2018 on November 1 and it is believed informal discussions have already been held.

I posted this in the other thread before I seen this but where would we play bird if we got him ? Centre is a waste for a bloke we'd have to pay that much for , not sure about the halves with all the money we have tied up there plus lamb , and if we get him as a lock we suddenly have a heap of backrowers. Chasing Holmes will depend on whether or not we get ponga , he seems to be a bigger priority at the moment and we won't get both

Nothing will eventuiate other than forcing the value of top players upwards when scumbag managers say to the Sharkies. "We want more money as xx and yy Clubs are making them offers for 2018". The value of top players will soar whilst middle of the road and second tier players will get nothing from cap increases alas.

This is the sort of thing we need to do for 2018.

It looks like 2017 will be much like 2016, albeit the players will be a year older and a year more experienced.

We haven't bought anyone that is an actual star, but we do have roughly 40 players who can develop into good firstgraders.

For 2018, we need to keep the best 30 or so of those we have now, who will hopefully be 20% better players after another year of development, and sign a handful of stars.

If these two don't come off, we need to keep trying.
