2015 NYC Holden Cup

Well it looks like Pride could be signed for a Sydney club soon. He has definately finished playing for the Knights - I thought a recall was possible. The Storm is out too. Quite frankly he wasn't really fully accepted when he came to Newcastle. The 2012 Storm SG Ball Player of the Year; the 2013 NYC Player of the Year; and the Storm Young Gun for 2014. What actually happened behind the scenes round Christmas 2013 / New Years 2014 is still unclear?

Harry Pondekas is getting regular starting time at the Bulldogs too. He was another import, coming from the Broncos early 2014.

Injuries starting to hurt the knights NYC too. That happened last year to the Knights NYC Minor Premiers.

I personally believe the Knights waste their money on giving young Kiwis a spot in our junior squads.
Over the last 10 years or so we have probably given 30 young Kiwis a run, and many of them were outstanding as juniors, but the closest we have seen to a regular firstgrader was Zane Tetevano. Only about 5 have even played firstgrade - Tim Natusch, Con Mika, Pat Vaivai, Tetevano and Tapine.
I don't know what the problem is. Many of them like Hanan Laban, Api Pewhairangi and Danny Levi have been captain of the side and have been very respected leaders and were seemingly very settled in the district, but as soon as they get a chance, they sign eleswhere.
I'd say the Knights have spent millions on young Kiwis who looked to be very talented over the last decade, but have got almost nothing back in terms of quality firstgrade players.

so you say neither vaivai or tapine will be regular firstgraders not sure you are right about that on the matter of players leaving maybe it has alot to do with the way they are treated my fans and media Newcastle likes to promote players from the area which is fair enough but they should praise all players sometimes seems like only locals are loved especially in lower grades must be something happening why they leave

I tend to agree but I feel that the kiwis we have brought in have been extremely talented and have just wasted their talent here, but that's been happening for years we lost so many juniors to other clubs over the years we have had to recruit kiwis and from other clubs, on pride I hope that he does the club a favour and ether comes back or sits out the year

NYC Knights defeated by Eels

The NYC Knights lost 46-4 to the Parramatta Eels at Hunter Stadium on Sunday afternoon, putting in a horror first half that saw them concede 28 points in the span of twenty minutes.

While they did play with more structure and purpose in the second-half, the young Knights were unable to claw their way back from such a gaping half-time deficit.

Despite the final scoreline the Knights were the first team to post points on the board, lock and captain Luke Yates breaking through the line in the eighth minute to feed Bradie Smith on the left touchline.

Bryce Donovan was unable to convert from out wide, leaving the score at 4-0.

The Eels were quick to strike back, Atini Gafa receiving a cut-out pass to score in the left corner three minutes later.

Nathan Davis' kick sailed wide, keeping the score locked at 4-4.

The Eels continued their dominance with another try eleven minutes later, forward Jordan Muna throwing an unorthodox ball over the back of his head in a tackle for Davis to collect and score.

Davis added the extras to his own try, the score 10-4 with 24 minutes played.

The Eels were at it again four minutes later, Tyrell Fuimaono slipping his way past the Knights' defence forty metres out to give fullback Bevan French an easy try. Davis again converted, the score now 16-4.

Second-rower Muna put the Eels even further ahead in the 29th minute when he ran onto a quality ball from halfback Zach Dockar-Clay to score near the uprights.

Davis nailed the easy conversion, giving the Eels a 22-4 lead.

The Knights' defence was in total disarray now and winger Abbas Miski took advantage, collecting a chip to run twenty metres and score.

Davis made it four from five conversions, extending the lead to 28-4.

In what had been a torrid first half the young Knights found themselves going into the sheds at half-time on the wrong end of a big scoreline.

They started the second half with plenty of energy, Brock Lamb in particular doing well to steer the team across the park.

It all came to nothing in the end though, the Eels' Miski breaking the second-half stalemate when he scored an easy try in the 56th minute with some help from fullback French on the right side.

Davis did well to convert, pushing the score to 34-4.

The young Knights continued to push for an opening in the oppositions' defence, but while they didn't manage to get over the line they did keep the Eels' attack away from their own until the 74th minute.

French scored his second on the end of a 30 metre play, brushing off attention from opposite number Donovan to score next to the uprights.

Davis again converted, giving the Eels a 40-4 lead.

The blue and golds weren't done though, Dockar-Clay making a line-break on the halfway line to dive over.

Davis kicked well to make it seven from eight conversions, giving the Eels a convincing 46-4 win.

I watched some of it. Mostly between clenched fingers.
I thought it was a good idea to use Levi off the bench. He came on after 20 minutes and for a few minutes we started looking like we were back in the game, but then they scored twice and i went to get a feed.
 
Yeah, interesting call. I thought there may have been an injury cloud, haven't seen all the games but thought he would start every time he's available.

Really need to bounce back next week or could slide out of the 8 after such a great first few weeks.

Levi is still only playing 50 or so minutes per game, and he just loves running from dummy half against tired players. I can see him making a career out of being an impact hooker off the bench.
I can't ever see him playing 80 minutes of firstgrade - or even long minutes. He just works too hard when he is on. You couldn't do that for long minutes.
 
No worries Billy. I've seen a few game and thought he went well maybe even up to NSW cup level, but if the interchange gets less it'll get harder and harder for the 9s that can't play long minutes.

Jack Kelly goes good as well but probably lacks the experience yet. Time will tell I guess.
 
In the sheds: NYC

The NYC Newcastle Knights are eager to re-group and deliver an improved performance in Round 8 after the side’s 46-4 loss to the Parramatta Eels.

Coach Troy Pezet spoke to Knights TV in the sheds after the game and said the defeat was a case of the side failing to start the match strongly.

“We didn’t handle the first half well today and the disappointing thing about that was our focus was to start well and complete and we didn’t manage that,” Pezet said.

The Knights succumbed to a barrage of tries in the first half that saw the home side trail 24 points at the break.

“In the first half we gave away five errors to their one,” he said.

“The four extra sets they had, they turned into tries and we were well behind the eight ball.

“In the second half, I thought we were better, we tried harder, but we’d used too much energy in the first half tackling, and we had nothing left to try and score some tries."

While the blowout score line was disheartening, Pezet assured the match was not an indication of the NYC Knights’ potential.

“I think we’ve been win loss all year and I think that’s been part of having a young squad…and trying to find a level of consistency,” he added.

“They are a really good group of kids and they work really hard.

“They are probably bitterly disappointed and rightly so, but they get a six day turnaround and get another crack at the Cowboys next week.

“We will work again this week and will try to right the wrongs."

Bradie Smith was the Knights’ sole try-scorer, he actually opened the scoring by crossing the line in the eighth minute thanks to quality build up work by captain Luke Yates.

“It probably wasn’t them that was hard to handle, it was probably us,” Smith said.

“We really did it to ourselves with mistakes and not completing sets how we wanted to.

“We were still in it and were trying to keep our head up and wanted to go out there and work hard in the second half and do what we know we can do.”

The young winger said the side is now eager to address errors in the up-coming match against the North Queensland Cowboys at Hunter Stadium on ANZAC Day.

“We will go back to training this week and will re-group after a big game against the Cowboys next Saturday,” he concluded.

McNamara back is good. not sure if he adds more at hooker, but he is a good backup for a heap of positions.
 
Good to see my old team mate Jake McNamara get a run. Hopefully he has fully recovered and plays his heart out if he's selected in the final team on the day. He was a halfback during the times we played together but by the sounds of it he is being molded into a hooker/half. He did play a few games at fullback which he carved up but NYC is a different story.

Match Analysis:

Newcastle Knights' NYC coach, Troy Pezet expects his side to leave last week’s loss behind and reconnect with a more controlled brand of football at Hunter Stadium against the North Queensland Cowboys.

A major positive for Pezet has been in the team's show of effort and willingness to improve from week to week.

“We need to freshen up after the weekend and concentrate on this week ahead of the bye,” Pezet said.

“I have been pretty happy with our forward pack and our halves have been good as well.

“If we get some continuity in our backline, that will help us.”

“Our problem at the moment is our ball control, so if we can control the ball a bit better and give ourselves a bit more of a chance, I think we can stay in the game a bit better."

The Knights remain cautious of the Cowboys after their Round 2 defeat but are confident in their ability to this time unearth a positive result on the back of well executed plays.

“They are a good side. We had a really good first half up there in Townsville last time we played them, but we fell away in the second half to result in a loss,” he said.

Both sides are trailing off tough games in Round 7, the Cowboys a 28-28 draw against the Warriors and the Knights a loss against the Eels.

“I’m expecting this week to be pretty tough,” he said.

Where will it be won: Ball control

“If we can control the ball and finish our sets, I think we give ourselves a pretty decent chance,” Pezet said.

“We aren’t playing great at the moment but we are mindful we are only up to Round 8 and have a long way to go.

“We are improving and there’s no lack of effort.

“We are still trying really hard and our execution at time is poor and its something we can improve as the season goes on.
