Thought I would give this it's own thread because I am sick of talking about Russell Packer and what he did, I would rather discuss who we can go after to replace him !!

Knights search for front-row replacement

By Matt Logue

Monday 13 January 2014 3:51 PM

Newcastle Knights CEO Matt Gidley says the Club will immediately start their search to replace prop Russell Packer, who had his employment terminated on Monday.

"We'll go out and look for a replacement for Russell for 2014," Gidley said..

"Being this late in the season, most teams have their squads pretty settled at the moment, but we’ll be out there in the market place looking at who can come in and fit the type of player we need for our Club.”

The Knights have a number of options to consider in both the NRL and English Super League when looking for a potential front-row replacement for Packer.

Gidley admits 'everything is an option at this stage', while confirming their will be no deadline on a final decision for a new player.

“We’ll sit down our recruitment team and we’ll discuss what options are out there and see what is the best fit for our club," he added.

“Then we’ll make the relevant approaches.”

Hopefully when he said Super League, he didn't mean old, 30-year olds who can't compete in the NRL anymore..

Obviously we won't find someone of potential rep quality like Packer again so the next best thing is a young guy from England or the NRL who is on the brink of having a breakout season.

Dear Dylan Smith.
What are you up to these days?
Would you like to spend a few weeks with Mr Hickmans and have a little talk about a contract?
Love.
Wayne

I wouldn't mind Eddy Pettybourne.
Mark O'Meley has decided to play for Wyong this year and is living locally. Get him into training and he could fill the spot for one season.

There's always the option of an early release. I'd imagine we have a decent amount to spend and we can always backpay

These are just some props available at the end of 2014 - Obviously they would need to be granted an early release

Ben Hannant
James Graham
Luke Douglas
Dave Taylor (Could play front row and maybe Bennett could get the best out of him)
Tom Learoyd-Lahrs
Richie Fa'aoso
Jason King
Andrew Fifita
Tim Mannah
Aaron Woods

Is that Bosden guy from the Roosters any good? I've noticed he is going to play with Wests Illawarra this year. There were big wraps on the guy a couple of years ago and Bennet was keen on him too.

Bennett knows Hannant and TLL well. And he did say that we'll be recruiting big names this year so maybe we'll be able to sneak one in early! There's always hope.

Yeah I remember that, he was rated massively and I wanted him at the Knights but I don't know what happened to him

Former Bulldog Frank Winterstein got released from his deal with the Bradford Bulls in the Super League in the UK to return to Australia. We should sign him up as he is pretty cheap and can play and defend.

I would love Learoyd-Lahrs, found a bit of his old form in 2013 & is a realistic chance of leaving Canberra since his family are in Tamworth if I remember correctly from the last time we went after him.

Yep he is from Tamworth, Played for Farrer High school...

Just read on twitter that we're chasing Jack de Belin hard with a "big money" offer. Would be very happy to sign him but he's not really a prop, is he.

We're going to be linked to everyone now.. will be interesting to sit back and watch it all unfold!

That would be a great buy.
He has it in him to be a Paul Gallen type when he matures a bit.

I wouldn't be surprised to see Hannant leave the Broncos. They'll need to get rid of some people on good money to accomodate Barba, Milford and possible further signings (DCE, Smith, etc). Hodges probably doesn't have much left in him, so there's one, and I think its more likely to see them let Hannant go rather than Parker, Thaiday, Gillett, etc plus they'd have a ready made replacement in McGuire.
