2013 SG Ball Thread

Find out the facts before you voice your opinion on how to rate junior talent. Stop rating kids on their last name. The kids you are rating in the halves are falling well short of the mark and the team is getting dominated in the forwards. As to the quote on the fb i know for a fact (not just guessing) he is thought of very highly from the knights and variours other top coaches. The fb has always been a quality half himself but they are grooming him for fb. With his attak he has always calved up the likes of M Dent ie, 140 points in 8 games last year playing in the halves, he was also the only Newcastle kid named in the U/18 NSW Country last year. I have been informed he has just been selected for the AIS U/18 Australian side this year. Let him adapt to this new position as we know he could go back to the halves and change the attacking direction of this side but this is all part of junior development and the Knights are wanting to develop him into a fb.

Who are the halves you are referring too when you said, they are falling well short of the mark ? Walsh and Dent ?
And the FB is a very good player, but atm he isnt playing too his strengths from FB, particulary his running game. IMO they need him at 6 or 7 and dent at 1 or vise verca. Along with Walsh. These three together, would be a nightmare for any side. Assuring that donovan runs the ball from FB. As for the middle, i dont know what to do there.

If you had seen all of the games then you would see this team is all about development than anything else. With the FB, it is pretty hard to run the ball when you keep turning the ball over on tackle 1,2 and 3. His kick returns in the last 3 games have been very good. So when the team can hold onto the ball he may get more off a chance to run the ball. With the young halves, they need a bit of confidence and some help up front.

They're missing Tevita Pangai on the edge no doubt. His combination with Mata'utia was lethal and he was a real go to man last year and before.

Ironically... Canberra where Pangai has gone have lost 3 in a row also and we play them next week.

Were so used to these boys making the semi's and giving it a real shake. Unfortunately it just isn't happening this year. The reasoning? I'm not too sure if it's the coaching, poor selections or just simply not good enough. Someone fill us in! They are going into the U20's next year and beyond, they are the future.

I don't see how anyone has commented on a player because of their last name? Sione Mata'utia is a freak and deserves selections and wraps regardless of who his brothers are. I don't know what else he can do to try and push a side playing out in the centres and captaining.

I'm not sold on Jacob Gagai though, from what I briefly saw of him.

If you're referring to Tyrone Walsh, is it the fact his last name is just that or was he the best choice to go with? I've only seen him play once against WSAS so cant really comment as the team got steam rolled around the forward pack. Which seems to be a problem, we have no size and a lot of sides have Polynesian players who make ground, we only have a couple who don't have the same impact.

Going back to Tevita Pangai, he was a real X Factor and lifted the whole side.

But I've seen Luke Yates, Sione Mata'utia etc in Matts last year and they are very talented and promising.

I totally agree with you about Sione and Tevita, he is a huge loss for this side. As for Sione, i have seen all games so far apart from weekend gone and he puts 110 % in, there is nothing else he could be doing.
And IMO i dont believe gagai is a 6 0r 7, went alright on the wing though.

This side wasnt real big in 16s either and were very successful. I just think they need some real hard work on their middle D and player changement in certain areas, give guys that arnt getting game time like Dent a go, who could make a significant difference to their attack. I watched him trial with cronulla earlier this yr, he was one of the standouts that day. Not sure why he didnt play there instead, id say he would have got selected in squad after his performance.
And i think the interchange hooker from last weeks game needs to start, just from his defence. Not sure how he went on the weekend though, as i didnt catch the game.

The Pangai/Mataútia combination was huge. I think they got 22 tries in 9 games between them 2 years ago, and if Sione hadn't been suspended they would have won the title.
I'd like to think Pangai wasn't the only thing we had going for us though.

Gagai is just good enough to hold a spot in the team, but from what i understand he was a fair bit behind the other guys when he arrived and is improving rapidly.
If his brother is anything to go by he will make big strides in the next year or two.

Gagai was at five eight last week aswell im preety sure

Good win over Norths.
Prop Roman Fepulea’i looks like a good find. Big prop who offloads a lot and has a very high workrate.

Do you know scorers, Billy?
Gagai got the first and last try. Williams and Amey scored, but can't remember who else.
Tyrone Walsh was injured. McNamara went to halfback and the side looked better i thought.
I'm sick of Walsh throwing 50 dummies a game. No one buys them anymore.
Luke Yates has a great game. He makes a lot of hard yards. I can't decide if he's a young Glen Grief or a young Billy Peden.

Dead rubber game today which is unfortunate I don't think I've seen that for a long time. The SG Ball side have been very disappointing this season.
