Karmichael Hunt eyes French rugby move
By Peter Badel | January 12, 2009 12:00am

THE battle for Brisbane Broncos fullback Karmichael Hunt has intensified with the NRL star the latest to be targeted by French rugby.

As the Broncos prepare to step up retention talks, the Brisbane Sunday Mail has learned rugby's interest in the Maroons custodian has now extended offshore.

Hunt is off contract at season's end and the Broncos face a major fight to retain one of the most sought-after players across the rival codes.

The 22-year-old Maroons custodian has been linked with the Sydney Roosters and St George Dragons, while the Queensland Reds and Australian Rugby Union have put out the welcome mat.

But none of those options can match the fiscal muscle of French rugby, which has already lured NRL players Mark Gasnier, Craig Gower, Luke Rooney and Sonny Bill Williams in the past 12 months.

The former Test fullback is happy at the Broncos, the club he joined as a 15-year-old, but is aware he stands to earn upwards of $800,000 a season in Europe.

Hunt's agent David Riolo said his client the would weigh up all offers before any decision to commit to the Broncos beyond this year.

"There's a heap of interest in K," Riolo said. "He won't have a problem getting a deal anywhere, and that includes rugby here or overseas.

"We haven't pursued the rugby option at this stage. If we do, we'll have to organise meetings and K will have to talk to the appropriate people.

"Any player of his calibre is going to attract attention from abroad. He's one of the best players in the world. He's still only 22. He's won Origin series, played for Australia and won a premiership.

"We're in no rush with the Broncos at this stage, but K is a Broncos boy so obviously they are a big consideration for him."

The Broncos have some important retention decisions to make in the coming months.

Aside from Hunt, star duo Darren Lockyer and Sam Thaiday are free agents for 2010, while boom prop Dave Taylor is also seeking a new contract.

The Reds remain a serious player for Hunt, but want the fullback to reciprocate their interest before tabling a formal offer.

Brisbane's hopes of securing Hunt will hinge largely on what they can afford to pay him. The veteran of 102 NRL games is on around $200,000-a-season at the Broncos but will require a significant upgrade as a seasoned Origin and Test campaigner.

Brisbane chief executive Bruno Cullen said the club would do everything possible to retain Hunt.

However, the captaincy will not be used as a carrot, with present skipper Lockyer still weighing up whether to play on in 2010.

"It will be tough to retain him obviously but Karmichael has indicated to us that he is keen to stay," Cullen said. "We haven't made a formal offer to Karmichael as yet but I imagine we'll step things up at our next meeting.

"I'm hoping it would be done by the end of February. It wouldn't surprise us if he's got interest in various areas, be that in rugby abroad or the Australian Rugby Union.

"We've got the nucleus of a squad that can take us forward for the next five years. I'd like to think Karmichael sees a future here."

knights have singled out afew props to posibly sign. moi moi, danny williams and dave taylor are also on the list.

Still doesn't really answer the question of where you got your information from.

Other than that, the prospect of Dave Taylor is quite exciting. I rate him.

It's all crap.

Although Moi Moi has indicated his next move is England once his contract is over with Parramatta.

Dave Taylor is the future of the Broncos and Sam Thaiday???

Seriously... I wouldn't believe anything.

I think you may be mixed up Amos with what is a rumour and something you actually want to hear.

Thaiday could be a possibility with Milton connected to the club. Imagine that, it'd be brilliant! That's my new dream headline for 09 haha.

Robbie Farah to announce this afternoon he has re-signed with the Tigers.

Nathan Friend has rejected the Titans deal offered to him.

I'm sure it's because although Farah wont be signed, he is unhappy the way the Titans dealt with the situation (showing Farah around, not telling him his place) so he may be off to Brisbane very soon.

Geez, Titans are stuffed. Friend was a perfectly good hooker for them. They got greedy and now they have lost one of their best players.
