In the trial yesterday Jake Saifiti and Josh King changed sides at halftime, so both got a half of reserve grade and a half of firsts. King did much longer minutes and Jake had bigger impact. My feeling is it's a tossup between those two for a bench spot.

Brodie Jones went so well for 60 minutes in the reserves that they called him to the sidelines and gave him a firsts jersey and sent him out to replace Buhrer for the last 20.

Rossy and Tom Hughes had a huge battle on the wing. Rossy won, but it was close.

Yates played big minutes and did a mountain of work. He has bulked up a fair bit, but is even fitter as well.

Saulo has the impact to play firstgrade, but probably not the stamina yet.

Sam Stone is bigger, fitter and probably stronger.

Brown has plenty to think about. When the reserves had Jake Saifiti, Saulo, Brodie Jones, Pat Mat and Faitotoa having a crack against Lillyman and Heighington etc, the old guys were on the back foot for sure.

My feeling is that Brown has settled on numbers 1 to 7 - can't decide how to use his hookers - and has about 15 forwards in contention for 9 or 10 spots.

Surely Buhrer won't get another contract.

What exactly is wrong with Buhrer? Was our equal best forward before his injury.

He's a good player, just don't see where he fits in going forward. Best in what way? Leadership?? He's efficient defensively but doesn't offer much else. Couple line breaks that lead to nothing. 1 try for 13 games and we won our games when he was at hooker where his passes from dummy half get more air than evil knievel.

Gossip coffee .com says this is the possible side to start 2018 just they're opinion of course ...Big rap for king being a starter but after the way he finished last season and the Knights saying they had to hold him back a bit at training and knowing Brown likes to reward the best trainers its possible , and i like Fitzy in the side too ...

Yeah, I can’t see that being the 17 at any point, let alone round 1.

Surely King won’t start prop. He’ll be lucky to have a bench spot. I do think he came on late last season and he may be having a cracking pre-season, but right now I’d think he’s our 6th prop behind D. Saifiti, Ese’ese, Lillyman, J. Saifiti and Heighington. If he earns that spot by outplaying that lot – great.

Buhrer won’t be hooker, not after the Griffin signing. I think he’ll firmly be fixated in the backrow this season unless of injury. Griffin and Levi to share the hooking duties. Buhrer was only used there last season out of necessity. He’s a makeshift hooker. I’m looking forward to seeing him back on the fringes where he looked so good at Manly.

With Fitzy looking like he'll grab a spot, I'm not sure how they're gonna fit Buhrer, Guerra & Barnett all in the backrow as well. Barnett might start from the bench under the excuse of coming back from injury, although I guess Fitzy could easily slot onto the bench too. Looking forward to seeing Buhrer return out wide, with a better team around him too, we might just see the best of him offensively as he combines with the centre.

We have a few players, forwards, in rehab who might not be fit for round 1 let alone trials could mean players like Fitzy and King might get a run even if bench ensuring those rehab boys are fully fit to start, we at least have the depth for it.

You don't win grandfinals with 90kg forwards - but of course, Buhrer is our only backup hooker at the moment, with Hazard and Starling both not ready for firstgrade anytime soon.
Buhrer has the same problem as Matt Hilder - can do 40 tackles a game, partly because opposition forwards don't mind running at him at all.

It might pay to keep Buhrer for a few seasons as we will no doubt lose Heighinton and Lillyman due to age, need to have some seniors/experience in club even if it is to play reserves and mentor.
Of course that all depends on new signings before 2019, and how our young back rowers, Fitzy, Stone etc come on.
