Yates is a nugget. Hard to tackle if their really having a go in attack. I've only seen straight running so far in first grade from him. Easy to see the defensive workhorse role his playing.

It's a lot to do with the job you are sent out to do and how confident you are to make alternative decisions based on your ability, like a mistake to a fringe player, Yates, to a first grade regular, Guerra, whole different scenario, allowances have to be made

Yates is a good defender but imo that's it , gets man handled in attack I would much rather a good attacking and defending lock . If that means yates stays in reserves so be it , you don't win games with players that are just good defenders you need to score points . Pity yates isn't 6' 4" and 110 kg he would be great ...

Unlike Buhrer who has some versatility Yates is a hard running tackler who is limited, he needed to develop other skill to his game during off season but sadly for both, great club men, there future looks limited to reserves unfortunately heart and effort don't always make up for size and ability.

Heart and effort wins you more games then size and skill. If half the guys with size and skill had a go we would be much better off. Newcastle is born and bred on toughness and effort. Look at all the past players. What we lacked in size and skill we more then made up for in heart and effort. We won 2 premiership under this banner.

News Sione just resigned with the club.

3 year extension. Can't see him in firsts next year without injuries. Certainly not in the centres.

Knights talent Sione Mata’utia inks new deal

    Newcastle Knights
    Thu 28 Jun 2018, 11:49 AM

The nib Newcastle Knights are proud to announce the re-signing of Sione Mata'utia.

The talented centre, who can also play in the backrow, has signed a contract extension which will see him remain at the Knights for a further three seasons.

The new contract keeps the 22-year-old at the Knights until at least the end of season 2021.

"As a Club, we're thrilled Sione has committed his future to the Knights," General Manager Football, Darren Mooney said.

"What's also pleasing is the fact Sione never wanted to leave. He's a talented footballer and we believe his best is still to come.

"He started his career on the wing, moved into the backrow and now finds himself in the centres, such is his adaptability.

"What the future holds, we don't know but Sione has the character and commitment to tackle whatever challenge is thrown his way.

"He's shown himself to be a very valuable member of our team, not only for what he contributes on the field but also what he brings off it."

A Raymond Terrace junior who made his NRL debut for the Club as a teenager back in 2014, Mata'utia has established himself as a dependable first grader and leader.

Having made the move to centre this year, Mata'utia has found some of his best form.

Equally at home in the backrow, the young talent provides the Club with versatility, while he's secured his future.

"I'm really excited and also very proud to re-sign with the Club," Mata'utia said.

"The Knights are much more than a team, they are my family.

"It was an easy decision to stay. Everyone can see we are building something very special in Newcastle and I can't wait for the Club to continue to grow. I'm glad I get to keep riding the wave."

Starting his career on the wing, Mata'utia became Australia's youngest ever Test player in his rookie season when he debuted at 18 years and 129 days.

After donning the green and gold in 2014, Mata'utia represented the World All Stars and Samoa at the Rugby League World Cup last year.

The way brown spoke about him a few weeks back it seems he will be our utility on the bench.

Glad it's done happy for him and club, hopefully those knockers will let him get on and play wherever that might be, backs, forwards, firsts, bench or reserves and I am sure that will depend on additional signings and injuries.

I'm fine with it, considering how young he is, and considering he's had three coaches and gone through the worst of times with the club. And that he wouldn't have broken the bank to keep. Now that we're stable it's time to restore the faith in him the club has shown, on the field.

He'll be in first-grade for sure, probably bench back-rower. But injuries, suspensions & form always affect sides so I'm sure he'll see a bit of starting football too.

If we can't fit Sione into our top 17 next year, we'll win the premiership - easy.

Well done Sione for 3 years I've been hard on him but this year has finally learnt to defend properly and run good lones and most importantly is healthy. Can see him as a benchy covering back row and backs.

Sione is better than at least half of our present team. If we can't find a spot for him next year it means we have either signed 8 to 10 better players than we have now, or a heap of players have improved.
We'd need a salary cap of about 12 million if our 18th best was worth 500k.

re someone mentioning the haters before it was all deserved he was a turnstile in defence and his attack didn't make up for it.
