Ese'ese can start with new signing prop, Dan & Jacob of bench, King reserves steps up if injuries/suspensions.
Ponga and Watson paid big money based on potential to be game winners but still unknown week in week out but assume they will get first bite of the cherry and like everyone else if form is not good dropped/replaced and the battle is on for positions.
Even if no other signings we will be competitive and if all our signings come good, v/competitive.

What you are forgetting is they are being paid as a starter in those positions and were promised them otherwise I highly doubt you get either of them if it weren't the case.

So for them to rock up to the club and then be told wait I want you playing a different position could very easily make them not want to be there.

Agree 88 now he's developing an offload I can see him as an elite front rower within the next couple of years. ( hell he nearly is now)

Worth trying Dan off the bench if we have the luxury of 4 quality props next year.
His best game last year he came off the bench and caused mayhem - no reason that Jake and Dan off the bench couldn't be a nightmare for sides - those guys can have some impact if they want.

If our biggest issue is where Dan/Jake/Ese'ese/Graham fit into the rotation next year we might win the comp.

Knights chase Adam Blair, NRL outcasts if 2018 salary cap bites — Highs, Lows and Big Blows
    [IMG]
NATHAN Brown is banking on rival clubs busting next year’s salary cap to fill up to 20 per cent of Newcastle’s 2018 roster, with Adam Blair sized up as the Knights’ latest big name recruitment target.

Blair — who has been given permission from Brisbane to shop around for a big payday in what is likely to be his final NRL deal — has been identified as the hard-nosed enforcer Brown wants to lead a pack heavy on potential but light on experience.

Also in this week in Highs, Lows and Big Blows — a serious NRL scheduling howler and the perfect storm that has another coach in the firing line.

The current Kiwis captain is also being hotly pursued by the Warriors and Dragons, two of the few clubs with room to move in their 2018 cap.

But with more cash to splash than any rival NRL outfit, the Knights are backing their ‘wait and see’ market approach to land them a blue chip front-rower and another “five or six players” in next year’s 30-man squad as a game-wide feeding frenzy looms.

Newcastle CEO Matt Gidley has confirmed the club’s interest in Blair, who the Broncos may be willing to release from the final year of his deal, while Brown has also alluded to the big spending Bulldogs being forced into shedding players they don’t want to lose — with foxsports.com.au understanding Newcastle to be keen on star props James Graham and David Klemmer.

“We have made contact with (Blair’s) agent Isaac Moses to let him know we are interested it is just a matter of waiting to find out if he is genuinely keen to talk to us,’’ CEO Matt Gidley told Newcastle Sunday over the weekend.

Brown meanwhile went on the offensive in a series of radio interviews on Sunday, urging head office to refuse concessions for any club that has overshot a predicted $9.2 million salary cap for next season.

Following the Knights’ impressive win over the Warriors, Brown told ABC Grandstandthat experienced campaigners such as Blair, Graham and Cronulla’s James Maloney all fit the bill for his rebuild, to which he is “still hopeful of recruiting five or six players”.

On Triple M he called for the NRL to “do the right thing” and ignore calls for a soft cap with the dragged out CBA negotiations delaying a firm 2018 spending figure.

“All the clubs, regardless of what they say, everyone got the email eight or ten months ago and got told that you’ve got to work off $9.1 million,” Brown said.

“And if you go over it, it’s your responsibility to get under it ... Some went over it and took a chance … some like us stayed under it in the hope that players would come along.

Ben Ikin, Nathan Ryan and Ben Glover diagnose and discuss the Rabbitohs’ biggest problems and where the Warriors are still going wrong.

“Let’s hope our friends at the NRL hold their nerve and make them go under it and don’t allow something like a grandfather rule. Those that put the market into a spin have to pay the price.”

It’s worth a mention that as an NRL-owned club for the past few years, Newcastle couldn’t have spend beyond either theirs or the salary cap’s means even if they wanted to.

And with reference to Bulldogs skipper Graham, Brown confirmed the Knights’ interest earlier in the year, “but he wanted to stay at Canterbury and they didn’t want to let him go.”

But with the Englishman on a back-ended deal worth almost $1 million next year, Klemmer also sorting through his own contract matters after splitting with his management and the Bulldogs struggling to offload dead wood, Newcastle are just one club waiting in the wings.

“Canterbury might not have a choice who they want to let go at the end of the day because if the NRL do the right thing and make them get under the cap like they should do, they may have to let a player go that they don’t want to let go,” Brown said.

Sorry mods, cant link the actual link but pretty obvious its from foxsports

If Ponga and Watson are "kids" and "not established first graders" what do you call Cogger and Meaney?

Fullback & five-eighth will be Ponga & Watson's spots. They'll only lose it if they are going absolutely shocking.

I think that's the point of most discussions on here, it is still up to players to perform and then for the coach to select the team best suited based on availability and form even if they have been promised position, might get first crack then up to them.

I think one thing we can all agree on is there will be lot of points in the team with Levi Watson Lamb and Ponga all on the field together. Exciting times ahead I hope

Fair enough, I am sure after a good preseason it will all become quite clear.

I wasn't aware there was any discussion to not give Ponga the fullback jersey, or Watson the 6!

That would go well, Watson arrives and is told yeah, we signed you and promised you the 6 jersey, but we meant in reggies. :giggle:

Both of those guys have said in interviews that they are being given a chance in the spots - not that they are locked in 100% assured of a firstgrade starting position, and no rational person would think they were.
It's only people on here who have added 2 and 2 and got 22.
Ponga would be the first 19 year old rookie in history to get a better deal than any veteran international if he has an iron clad agreement to start in firstgrade. No coach has ever or will ever make that deal - and if Brown did, time to sack him, he's insane.
