Thought it would be nice to have an official thread to discuss this rumour.

    https://www.foxsports.com.au/nrl/me...e/news-story/19506f2221f16daba636efb9bcec71f0

Apparently Manly are looking to get him for $200k.

Sure we are not going to use him and would be keen to offload, but just as sure, Manly are low balling us big time if they are planning to use him at NRL level consistently.

What do you think we do here, let him go with thanks and an extra 200k in cap space, that we may not even use? Or push them for $400k?

I'd be happy for him to go to free up 50% of the freight, we have Lamb, Cogger and I guess at a pinch Pythian and Johns as backups? $200k though tell them there dreaming we are already a kazillion under the cap.

We can pay most of the freight if they give us an outside back say Kelly or Wright (not the greatest but does goal kick)

$200k for a former rep halfback is a steal for Manly.

Footing $400k for a player not at the club is a blow for us.

But it still frees up $200k for us, as well as another position in the top 30 which could be used for another player in our lower grades or from outside of the club to strengthen the roster.

They're getting the better deal but there's still a positive in it for us. Still, it would be nice to squeeze them for another $100k to split the difference.

Money for 2018 isnt our issue, we should be pushing a player swap

True, it isn't. But having another $100k or so to top up a current player and keep them happy isn't a bad thing.
I'd throw it to Lamb as a sweetener to stick around this season as a show of goodwill with the view of him resigning for another couple of years.

Wouldn't be surprised if they let Manly have him for 200k. They'll be pretty happy that someone finally wants to take him off our hands & we have plenty of cap to spare. Probably unlikely that Manly will offer any player we want in return, we won't sign some average player for the sake of it.

let him go. he's only taking up a spot here and it's not like he's got options lining up to sign him

You're probably right. We'd have to be pretty desperate to ask for a player swap with someone they're looking to release.
Could cheekily ask to swap with Tommy Turbo but settle for a couple of slabs and a meat tray.

Even for 200k we'd be silly not to take it. Great for both parties. Kelly would be a smart swap.

Problem is we are still under the minimum 95% cap spend as it is. So we lose hodko for 200 that brings us to 500k roughly under. Which is a lot easier to cover then say Manly paying his full amount of 500k which would make us a good 800k under if that makes sense?
So i dont think Knights would have an issue with Manly paying 200k.

I have a lot of respect for Trent and want to see him finish his career on a high note playing first grade, but from the Knights perspective letting him go to a competing team whilst paying 3/4ths of his contract is bad business. Manly would have to throw in a decent player.

That's how it should be pitched to Manly

Meanwhile, we know we aren't using him, even if injuries occur you'd think Cogger would get a run ahead of him

So it's 200k we wouldn't have otherwise had. Unless we view that 200k as holding some value in Trent helping our reserve grade learners? Otherwise the onus is on Manly to up the offer to a price commensurate with Trents true value, which probably is more like 300-400k

Manly are the club looking to sign Lamb from us, throwing them Hodko to chew on for a year could be enough to see Lamb stay here for the year and who knows what could happen in that time!

Trent has been great for us off the field with his work with local charities and deserves to finish his career in the NRL if the opportunity arises so I have no problem with us releasing him to Manly for just 200k a year. We did pay some of his salary for 2018 this year plus honestly his market value is probably around 200-300k when you consider his form over the last two years and his widely publicised knee injuries.

Unless we have a few serious injuries in the 6-7 area I can't see Hodko getting a start in firsts but to also let him go for very little payment to us seems to be bad business and a little bit insulting to him. He is by all accounts a top bloke and has been a very good player, SOO. We should set a standard of how much, say 50% or a swap deal otherwise he stays and is used as best suits the club. We might get more out of him than the payment amounts to. He could mentor and as a first class goal kicker could teach a few potential kickers.

We won't get more than 200k for Hodko unless he gets another offer.
If Manly are the only one's interested, they can give us as little as they like.

I'd let him go for sure, no chance of playing for us and he deserves a shot at playing. So if he's keen to play for them let it happen.
