Newcastle Knights lose big guns Willie Mason and Jeremy Smith for Bulldogs clash

    • BARRY TOOHEY
    • THE DAILY TELEGRAPH
    • APRIL 22, 2014 12:00AM

NEWCASTLE Knights enforcer Jeremy Smith has succumbed to a knee injury and will miss Saturday night’s clash against the Bulldogs which is almost certain to also rule him out of Kiwi selection contention for the Anzac Test.

It is a double blow for the Knights with prop Willie Mason set to also miss the game because of suspension.

Smith suffered the injury in the Knights final pre-season trial against Canberra with his knee heavily strapped during the opening seven rounds of the premiership.

But it has finally caught up with him.

“Jeremy Smith’s been brave and he’s certainly been carrying a leg injury, ”Knights coach Wayne Bennett said yesterday.

“I’ve talked to him this morning (about giving him a rest). He’s even still limping today.

“The two days we played with five day turnarounds have knocked him around a bit but he’s been there because we needed him and he hasn’t let anybody down.

“He’s just at the point now where he is struggling.”

In something of a trade-off for losing Mason, Kade Snowden returns to the frontrow for the Dogs clash after being stood down from the loss to Brisbane because of concussion.

Bennett played down suggestions five-eighth Jarrod Mullen is still struggling with his hamstring after it was clearly noticeable he was battling to stretch out when in pursuit of runaway Broncos backrower Matt Gillett last Friday night.

Bennett claimed Mullen’s reluctance to put his foot down was more psychological than physical.

“There is no issue there,” Bennett said.

“He couldn’t play NRL if he wasn’t fit in that regard.

"Psychologically, hamstrings are one of your worst types of injuries when you’ve got speed and you’re built to run fast.

“It’s always in the back of your mind for a week or two afterwards because you don’t want to re-tear it again. You are always vulnerable.

“He’s fit and he knows that. It’s just a confidence thing for him now.”

Bennett admitted he doesn’t have all the answers in regard to his side’s up and down form.

Asked if the side was struggling to re-establish its identity after their strong finish to last season, Bennett said:

“Of course I’m wondering where that is. It’s been a battle for us.

“You sometimes wonder where it comes from and you wonder where it goes. I don’t think we’ve done anything to make it disappear on us.

“Our last four games have been our best of the season.

"We had one bad game in that but the other three have been pretty acceptable. I think we are getting on top of it.

"We just need to start winning some games.”

Newcastle Knights need to find the character that took them to final four in 2013

    • AAP
    • APRIL 21, 2014 5:31PM

VISITING Alex McKinnon may have provided inspiration but Newcastle coach Wayne Bennett says his team is no closer to rediscovering the character that booked them a surprise 2013 NRL preliminary final.

Bennett and a group of Knights players visited McKinnon in a Sydney spinal rehabilitation ward last week and were buoyed to learn the injured backrower had shown small improvement with movement.

“He's been really good and the boys were pleased to see him,” Bennett said of McKinnon, who had his neck broken in a lifting tackle last month.

“You want to see the improvement but it is just so far for him to go right now.

“No one is getting too carried away with it.

“But everyone is pleased every day we get a report saying something else is feeling better — at least good things are happening for him.”

Barely three days after the visit, the Knights were thrashed 32-6 by Brisbane in Newcastle on Good Friday to leave them 14th on the ladder with just two wins from seven games.

Ahead of Saturday night's away clash with the Bulldogs, Bennett admitted he was still wondering where the character of last year had gone.

Newcastle shocked the NRL in 2013 when they upset the Storm in Melbourne to progress to a preliminary final against eventual premiers Sydney Roosters.

“Of course I am wondering where it is,” Bennett said.

“It's been a battle for us to get it back.

“You sometimes wonder where it comes from and then wonder where it goes.

“But I said to them this morning our last four games ... we've had one bad one but three were pretty acceptable performances.

“I think we are getting on top of it, we just need to start winning some games.”

Newcastle could also benefit from having something their next opponent has in abundance — good fortune.

The Bulldogs have won the last three games in one-point thrillers.

“We haven't been playing with a lot of luck,” Bennett said.

“Sometimes luck runs with you and sometimes it runs against you.”

Don't how this game will turn out. We always play good generally against the Doggies so hope that works to our advantage.

I see us getting pummelled. It's pretty much evident with our inconsistency, weakened forward pack and a halves pairing with one that's still got all the pressure on him and one still not looking 100%. Hodkinson and Reynolds have been on fire and their forwards easily have the edge on ours ATM. Unless Mullen has his kicking boot on and our forwards are putting in good yards we won't win.

2 of Mason's best games last year were against the bulldogs, especially in the semi, so we are really going to miss him. Bulldogs have won their last 3 games by 1 point so hopefully that will take some kind of toll on them but I wouldn't count on it, Newcastle will have to produce something pretty special.

Though I do remember way back in 2004 I went to see a Knights v Bulldogs came in Newcastle, There were several of our best players out (Joey, O Davis, Kennedy etc.) with more pulling out on game day, the Bulldogs were practically full strength and as the teams were read out on the big screen I was sitting there thinking 'we are going to get absolutely smashed' but we ended up winning 32-6.

    Mamo credits McManus for rise

    By Matt Logue

    Tue 22nd April, 10:35AM

When it comes to consistent performers, it's hard to go past Knights winger James McManus.

From his sheer effort to his unquestionable reliability, McManus is one of the competition's most dependable players.

So when star rookie Jake Mamo credits the flying Scotsman's advice for helping him rise to the NRL ranks, you know he is in extremely good hands.

"Jimmy has been helping me ever since we started pre-season," Mamo told Knights TV after his top grade debut against Brisbane last Friday.

"He is a fellow winger, he is always safe and he is a NSW State of Origin representative.

"He has just helped me a long to this point.

"That’s the main thing that Wayne (Bennett) wants is a safe player and I think I got through with no errors so I was happy with that."

Mamo may not have got the win on debut, but he was pleased with his first up performance in the top grade.

The Gosford-born speedster played 80 minutes and made 17 runs for 115 metres with 2 tackle breaks.

"I was happy to make my NRL debut," he enthuses.

"We obviously didn’t get the result we wanted, but that’s life.

"Well first kick of the game, they put a bomb up to my corner and I was a little bit sketchy and gave it a bit of a juggle.

"That was just nerves I think, but then I got into the game after that."

Mamo has no doubts he'll get better with more exposure to the NRL ranks in the coming weeks.

"I definitely learnt a lot though and really I can only go up from here," he says.

"I think the step up from 20s to first grade is that there is nowhere to hide.

"Everyone is just putting big hits on, but I'm happy with how I went and I'll only improve."

It's a challenge for Mamo that starts with a bumper clash against the Bulldogs at ANZ Stadium on Saturday night.

    Knights set for big Bulldogs

    By Matt Logue

    Tue 22nd April, 11:19AM

From the 'Beast' Greg Eastwood through to 'T-Rex' Tony Williams, Canterbury-Bankstown possess one of the NRL's most fearsome forward packs.

Throw in the likes of Sam Kasiano, David Klemmer and James Graham and it's easy to see why the Bulldogs are considered the biggest team in the competition.

That's the predicament facing the Newcastle Knights in their crucial clash against the table-topping Dogs at ANZ Stadium on Saturday night.

The Knights will head into this weekend's Round 8 match without experienced campaignerWillie Mason due to suspension, but fellow prop Zane Tetevano insists the team's big men will be ready to fire in his absence.

"The Dogs have got some good front-rowers, but we are all pretty confident coming up against big packs," Tetevano says.

"So we’ll just take it as it is."

Tetevano says the team are desperate to make amends for their disappointing loss to Brisbane with a strong showing against the Bulldogs.

He believes a long turnaround after a few tough weeks on the road is a significant advantage for a Knights side keen to find some much needed momentum.

"We started off pretty well, but the final score shows that the final result was disappointing," he admits.

"We’ll just have to get ready for the Bulldogs. We’ve got a long turnaround, so we’ve got a lot of training ahead of us.

"The long turnaround is probably going to help us.

"We’ve been on the road to Canberra and Townsville, so a long rest will probably help us to prepare for a big game against the Bulldogs."

    Amazing gameday that was.

We also beat them 20-16 in 2010 when we were paying $4 to win. We also beat them the year before by 22-14 I believe when they were competition leaders ply the 3 games last year.

I don't think we played all that bad againgst the broncos last week just couldn't break their defense which they won their game on. Key will be getting off to a good start, we will be ****ed if the bulldogs get a heap of possession early. Knights to cause an upset here and win 26-16. The thing that concerns me this weekend though is our defense.

Probably gonna head down for this one. We had the wood on the Dogs last year and I think that we'll get up in this one.

We'll probably beat Canterbury given how the results have gone this year. Despite our mostly uninspiring start to the season we're only 6 points off the lead. Sounds better than saying 14th.
