Old Boys celebrate 1997 triumph

Sun 27th August, 11:32AM

This Old Boys Day, the nib Newcastle Knights will shine a light on the triumphant 1997 premiership winning team.

In a year where the Club celebrates a rich 30-year history, this year also marks 20 years since that inaugural premiership.

Led by Paul ‘The Chief’ Harragon and including the likes of Matthew Johns, Mark Hughes, Billy Peden, Robbie O’Davis and Adam MacDougall, they will proudly be at McDonald Jones Stadium this Sunday.

"The 1997 season was an incredible one not just for the Knights, but the entire Hunter region,” Harragon said.

“That Grand Final win, just 10 years after the Club first formed, was achieved on the back of incredible community goodwill.

“It galvanized Newcastle and gave our football Club the credibility we were owed.

“I am looking forward to catching up with everyone for what should be a very special Old Boys Day."

The 1997 team will be introduced to the crowd on Saturday and complete a lap around the field before the entire Old Boys group will form a guard of honour for the current team to run out through.

This Old Boys Day also marks a new committee at the helm, made up of Kurt Gidley, Bill Peden, Mark Hughes, Stephen Crowe, Tim Maddison, Tony Townsend, Jason Allen, John Lehman and Jarrod O’Doherty.

The Club would like to acknowledge and thank the previous committee of John Laut, John Duncan, Barry Walton, Mark Sargent and Rob Tew.

Get your ticket now and don’t miss the 2017 Old Boys Day at McDonald Jones Stadium.

Dan Saifiti should sit out the game.
Even if he is cleared of longterm injury, he could make it worse by playing when the ligaments are still a bit stretched, and the last person we need to risk in a nothing game is Dan.

Too right Billy, we are going to get slaughtered so rest both Safiit's and Barnett and play Toupu, Paea and Starling, even if injured.

No point in risking our futures.

Tyrone Amey named in the 17 (number 15) and Pasami Saulo in the 21.
Good news for them - bad news for our semi final team in reserve grade.

Saulo will still play reserve grade as long as there's no injuries. Hopefully this is a sign he'll be training with the top grade next season.

They have already said Saulo is signed. I think Amey is either signed now, or has a chance to grab a spot. For me, Amey and Sam Stone have been the biggest surprize improvers of the year.

Apparently Sione is fit and really keen to play but the specialist doesn't want him to.

Seems they are worried about his head knocks.

Finally Amey gets a shot. Been calling for him to get a go for months. Also good to see Saulo get some recognition.

Been concerned about Sione's tackling style and concussion for quite some time. If his career is going to be in the forwards to which he is not suited, it is gonna be a short career.

Maybe this will be his wake up, sorry bout dat, and he and coach will agree to positional change for next season on. Because of McManus situation you can understand the caution by medical and coaching. The time is perfect for the change.

Amey's profile has been added to the firstgrade list, and Tyler Randell has been removed.
Amey's profile says he works as a mechanic.
