Knights thank SES volunteers

Mon 18th May, 03:22PM

The Newcastle Knights invite SES volunteers to the Club’s Monday night’s match against the Brisbane Broncos as a sign of appreciation for their efforts during the recent storms.

The Hunter was hit with a severe storm on April 20 and 21, which saw much of the region call upon SES volunteers to assist homes and businesses.

“We want to say thank you to the SES volunteers who worked tirelessly for the region during the damaging storm last month,” CEO Matt Gidley said.

“As our region does, we look after each other at a time of need and we are extremely grateful for the job these volunteers did and will continue to do.”

Radio 102.9 KOFM, who call all of the Knights' games, have joined with the Knights to say thank you.

"KOFM and the Knights stand as one with our community to honour and applaud the dedication of the remarkable SES volunteers,” KOFM’s General Manager Steve Smith said.

“This is just a small way to show we really appreciate them.”

Minister for Emergency Services David Elliott thanked the SES volunteers who carried out many heroic deeds without a thought for their own safety.

“I know SES members don’t volunteer for praise, but I would like to take the opportunity to express my admiration and appreciation for our volunteers and their outstanding service,” Mr Elliott said.

Parliamentary Secretary for the Hunter and Central Coast, Scot MacDonald said the tickets were a great acknowledgment of the character and community spirit in the Hunter and the Central Coast and he hoped families would enjoy taking time to out to watch the game.

SES Commissioner Adam Dent said the hard-working SES members appreciated the offer, “This is a great reward for our members who have worked tirelessly to protect and assist communities and help get them back on their feet.”

To redeem on match day, simply attend any Tickemaster Box Office window at Hunter Stadium with SES photo identification.

The complimentary ticket is general admission and any accompanying guests may purchase a general admission ticket (Adult $25, Concession $20, Child $10).

Tickets can be collected or purchased at any Ticketmaster Box Office window at the stadium on match day.

Gates open at 4.30pm, with the Under 20’s kicking off at 4.45pm before the main game at 7pm.

Gagai should be in for a big game, Bennett didn't rate him as a fullback.

He didn't? When he say that? I'm pretty sure Gags played some fullback in a trial when Bennettt was coach. Bennett obviously wanted him back to the play centre at he Broncos as they have a million fullbacks lol

Wayne has an appalling record against sides he previously coached, because all the guys he used to coach either want to show him he was wrong to not rate them, or right to rate them, depending on what Wayne thought of them.
I think this is a chance for our team to finally hit some form and show us, and themselves, what they are capable of.
Gidley has plenty to prove.
Korbin has plenty to prove.
Uate has a few things to show Wayne.
Even Gagai wants to show uncle Wayne what a good player he is.

I expect an extra 20% effort from all the boys on Monday.

The guy with the most to prove is Stone. In public he will say it's just another game, but he'll want this one more than a grandfinal win. Wayne actively campaigned against him getting the job.

He didn't? When he say that? I'm pretty sure Gags played some fullback in a trial when Bennettt was coach. Bennett obviously wanted him back to the play centre at he Broncos as they have a million fullbacks lol

A few years ago he said Gagai was a centre & to be a fullback these days you need a ball playing game. Was a pretty neat pass for McManus to score, even without that he's making a good fullback. Bennett was always too stubborn on his opinions & barely experimented outside those opinions. And yeah he did get a little bit of time in a trial but that was when Mullo was gone & we were looking for options like Boyd going to 6, but ultimately we went with Dobson.

Hate going to Monday night games. Having to wait all weekend then go to work on Monday and having to contend with the traffic. How come quite a few time in the last few years we've copped the Horses on Monday nights yet they seem to be on every other Friday night.

Broncos named in Origin

Darius Boyd
Justin Hodges
Sam Thaiday
Corey Parker
Josh McGuire
Matt Gillett

We lose Beau Scott

Ben Hunt will give us a taste of what a half who provides direction, composure and a smart kicking game looks like.

Disappointed I miss out on the chance to boo Darius for 80 minutes.

DCE in doubt so Ben Hunt may get a call up although Michael Morgan will be considered as well

Guess it also depends on whether Mal wants 4 forwards (18th man Dylan Napa) or a utility

Extended turnaround aids Knights

Tue 19th May, 02:16PM

The Newcastle Knights have embraced an eight-day turn around to recuperate from a gritty win on Sunday afternoon as they prepare to take on the Brisbane Broncos in another big match on Monday night at Hunter Stadium.

The Knights mixed it up with a recovery session at Howzat Sports Centre which saw the players pitted against each other in friendly but competitive games of soccer, volleyball and basketball.

“It’s been a little bit different at training and we have a change up here today,” Stone said after the session on Tuesday.

“There’s some good energy and the boys are bubbling around. It’s amazing what a win can do."

While spirits at the Club are high, Stone assured the team is determined to convert the positive energy into another win against the Broncos.

“The boys that are playing have a big game to prepare for…that’s our focus, Brisbane on Monday night,” he said.

“We do have some bumps and bruises and they’ll be a few boys on light duties, particularly in the early part of this week.

“Having an eight day turnaround I think will be an advantage."

On Sunday Stone saw a pleasing return to the type of consistent, courageous football displayed by the Knights’ in the first month of the season.

“I think we dominated the first half. We won the possession for the first time in a while in the first half, which was nice,” he said.

“We controlled the ball okay.

“I’m a little bit disappointed about the soft try that was scored, but there was possibly another chance or two go missing for us."

The Broncos sit third on the competition ladder, and while suffering recent defeat by Queensland counterparts, the North Queensland Cowboys, they stand as one of the most formidable opponents in the NRL.

“They have been really consistent this year, particularly with their defence,” he said.

“They defended their line really well and even on the weekend when they were beaten by the Cowboys, I thought their goal line defence was still really good.

“We have a task in front of us, but we have a pretty good record on Monday night at home.

We are looking forward to doing it again against Brisbane on Monday.

“Broncos vs Knights games are always big games and Monday night is going to be no different."

With State of Origin teams announced on Tuesday, the Knights also meet an opposition missing five key personnel due to Queensland selections.

“We get them at a decent time,” he said.

“Brisbane are obviously going to have a few players in the Origin crew…it’s a good time to play them,” he said.

Meanwhile, Newcastle second rower, Beau Scott has again claimed his spot in the NSW Origin team.

“Beau had a great series last year and I’m assuming he’s likely to get selected again and that’s probably justified,” he said prior to the midday announcement.

Yet, Stone says the team is unperturbed by the absence of the dominating enforcer nor the impact Origin selection will have on their opponent.

“I think we are concentrating on Brisbane and that’s our main focus at the moment,” he said.

“We are just head down and trying to play as hard as we can.

“To get two competition points, we need to be a little bit more desperate then they considering our positions on the table.

“He has a job to do and I have a job to do so we are pretty much putting our head down and getting that done.”

I just hate Brisbane. Even pre-Bennett, And I wasn't a day 1 Newcastle supporter because I wasn't around so it can't be because they joined the same year. They're just a brilliantly ran club and its probably there surplus of constant cash flow that makes me jealous, to sit and bide QLD's origin winnings only worsened the blow.

Maybe it was my first Knights finals game in 06 against them where they flogged us.

Take the 'This is Newcastle' sign and pin it up on the door to Wayne's coaching box please.

Sims aims for back-to-back wins

Tue 19th May, 03:43PM

“It’s going to be a hard game, they are always tough,” Korbin Sims said about the Newcastle Knights' up-coming rival, the Brisbane Broncos.

But the 23-year-old forward is certain the Knights are in the right place to put in a quality performance against the Queensland based club on Monday night at Hunter Stadium.

After breaking a five-game losing streak last weekend, the Knights hope it signals the start of the side turning their season around.

“It was very relieving,” Sims said about the victory over the Wests Tigers on Sunday.

“We were looking down the barrel of six in a row and you don’t want to have that in your season at any point in time.

“To get the win was really helpful for us and for moving forward in the long run.”

Sims was particularly glad for the team to earn a positive appraisal from coach Rick Stone, who noted a marked shift in the side’s application on the field.

“(Rick) Stoney was really happy with what we did on the weekend,” he said.

“Our on line defence was really good. We’ve always shown urgency in that department.

“We just have to finalise and look into a couple of areas in our game.

“Other than that, Stoney was really happy with our game and the way we competed.

“It was that never-say-die attitude that we might not have had over the last couple of weeks.”

The Broncos will miss a portion of the side’s mainstays through selection in the Queensland State of Origin side yet Sims says that’s no reason for the Knights to drop their guard on Monday night.

“They might have a couple of injuries here and there and some players out with rep duties, but they are still going to be a quality side and are always going to be tough whenever you play them,” he warned.

“They are sitting near the top of the table so are going to be really strong, so I’m preparing for a really physical battle.”

The Knights made the most of a longer week on Tuesday with a recovery session at Howzat Sports Centre, which saw a spirited indoor sports competition played between teammates.

“We had a bit of fun today. We have a bit of a longer turn around so had a different training session today and played a bit of basketball, some footsal and some beach volleyball,” Sims added.

“All the games were low intensity but we had a bit of fun."

While the whole team did well to convert their athletic skills to the indoor sports, Sims’ Man of the Match was none other than team captain, Kurt Gidley.

“(Kurt) Gidsy is always good fun with those sort of things,” he said.

“It’s probably one of the more interesting games of basketball I’ve ever played in my life.”

Fun aside, he says the Knights looks to replicate the energy and focus shown in the previous week’s preparation in the lead up to Monday night’s clash.

“It’s going to be more or less the same.

We prepared really well and had changed a few things in our preparation, so if we can try to stick to what we did last week I hope we get another win,” he concluded.

I hate the Broncos because I live in QLD & have had them rammed down my throat for as long as I can remember. It was like they were the only team in the comp up here. It also made it worse being born & raised in Roma.
