    ROCHOW A WANTED MAN

Newcastle have their work cut out for them to re-sign Robbie Rochow with a number of clubs chasing the young backrower.

While the Knights have offered Rochow a three-year deal, the 25-year-old has placed negotiations on hold until the season kicks off in March.

Penrith are another club keen on the former NSW Country Origin representative, while his name has also been mentioned in Canberra.

Since returning to his junior club in 2012 after a brief stint with Melbourne where he made his NRL debut in 2010, Rochow is in his fifth pre-season with the Knights.

After missing the bulk of last season due to a back injury which limited his appearances to just five for the campaign, the Maitland product is primed for a big 2016.

Foxsports.com.au can reveal that Manly have expressed interest in Rochow and are in the market for a backrower with Blake Leary, Tom Symonds and Feleti Mateo all off contract.

This was reported by Foxsports this morning. He's close to my favorite Knight... We have to retain him. Nothing else to say!!!

If we lose Rochow I won't be happy! If we lose both him and Tapine ...

Where is all this talk about loyalty with the Club sticking by him with his injury run? Hopefully just a manager talking up his value for his won per centage.

For a bloke that's spent 2/3's of most seasons in most of his career on the sideline he sure is in demand.

Lets hope we retain them both, would hate us to become feeders for other clubs!

Are we going to have anyone left in 2017?

Do Canberra not understand the amount of back-rowers they already have?! Ridiculous really. Penrith would be questionable also.

If there's one guy I don't want to lose it's Rochow, and I'd choose him over Tapine if it came down to not being able to retain them both which would be disappointing if that's the case.

    His back could go again.
I don't know why he has put negotiations on hold till the season kicks off, unless he is confident he can prove his back is good to go, and the offers he is getting are low because no one knows if he will be able to continue his career.
He was let go by Melbourne years ago because of his back, and he has now had a spinal fusion operation, which mostly makes things better, but sometimes makes things even worse.
Anyway, it kind of depends on how his back is, what he is worth.

Rochow is the kind of player we really need to keep. An important cog to our team imo.

It's surprising how the team with the wooden spoon has players in demand, I thinking we need to be demanding players from other clubs to. Rochow is a great player and if we lose Tapine as well, i don't know!! Whats below the wooden spoon????

Probably to see if the Knights are still a joke on the field.
If he's getting good offers at successful clubs, he might not want to waste his prime running in the bottom 4-6 every year.

I'm maybe just a footy lover because I think we will go ok this season . We probably wont be in the top 8 but we have a lot of new and young players and you have to build towards a premiership. With the signings we have made with the young guys we already have and if they play to they're potential , 2017 will be the year we will climb high on the table.
I'm especially interested in our forwards we have a lot of big guys coming through now , Brown obviously thinks he can get the best out of the players he has bought and retained . Also I'm looking forward to seeing how blokes like Uiti Baker , Pauli Pauli , Tekina Vailea , Krys Freeman and David Bhana go , If these guys hit they're straps anything could happen.

Robbie Rochow confesses he may be too young to captain the Knights

NEWCASTLE back-rower Robbie Rochow admits it would be a great honour to lead the Knights this season but concedes he may be too young as coach Nathan Brown continues to mull over his captaincy options following the departure of Kurt Gidley.

Rochow, whose playing future beyond the end of the season remains clouded, is one of a handful of players in the club’s senior leadership group being considered for the role by Brown.

There is a strong possibility the coach may opt for more than one skipper, with the likes of new recruit Trent Hodkinson, veteran Jeremy Smith and five-eighth Jarrod Mullen all in contention.

A duel appointment is expected to only enhance the highly-respected Rochow’s chances even more.

Asked about his captaincy aspirations, Rochow 25, said:

    “It’s probably a bit early. I think I’m a bit young.

“But they (the club) have pointed out to us age isn’t a factor, it’s how you lead by example and that type of thing.

It would be great for me but hopefully, our group will respond to whoever is the captain.

“I’ve had no indication from Nathan at all so I’m just happy to be on the field and train every session at the moment and looking forward to playing round one.”

Despite Rochow’s 2015 season being disrupted by injury, it hasn’t stopped rival clubs circling the big backrower, with Manly believed to have already tabled a lucrative offer and Penrith also interested.

The Knights have also moved to re-sign him but Rochow has confirmed he has put all negotiations on hold until after the season kicks off.

“Personally, I’m not concerned about securing my future at the moment,” he said.

“I think the year I had last year (with injury), I just want to get back to playing the footy I know I’m capable of and getting on the field and doing my best is my priority at the moment.”

He says his preference is to remain in Newcastle.

“Definitely, hopefully we can work something out and I can stay here,” he said.

“I’ve got everything here for me and my family is here and I love playing here so hopefully, we can work something out once the season kicks off.”

Meanwhile, Hodkinson is expected to be the latest player to withdraw from the All Stars clash in Brisbane on February 13.

The NSW halfback will see a specialist on Friday in a bid to get the all clear to resume full contact at training following off-season surgery on his wrist.

Brown says he will be “surprised” if Hodkinson is ready for the All Stars clash.

Not sure the Sharks is the best place for him. Would be lucky to Crack their forward pack in his current form.
