Was Tim Natusch not a Knight at one stage of his career?

Good work for Chanel, Tyler, and ex Knights Sam Anderson, Mitch Williams for NSW and Timmy and Kalifa for Qld.

They generally pick guys in these games they think are unlucky not to be playing firstgrade, and all those guys fit that criteria, more or less.

I think that might be the first rep side Chanel has made.
Pete, Pat and Sione made ever junior rep side going, including being the only 3 brothers to all make Australian Schoolboys - but Chanel had a lot of injuries in his teens and missed the rep sides.

Timmy Natusch was one of the first Kiwis juniors we signed, and he actually had a really interesting story. Our scout went to sign up Hanan Laban, who was the son of a League big wig who was the man behind the Wellington bid for an NRL side (Ken Laban). Anyway, they put on a game to show off Hanan, and Tim played, although he had only really played Union before, and the scout signed both of them.
Hanan and Tim both played a couple of years of under 20s and some reserve grade while they both finished degrees at Newcastle Uni. Tim played 2 games of firstgrade I think, and got a contract at the Broncos, but never made firstgrade.

Mitch Frei would be worth another contract next year if we can't find anyone else. He improved a lot last year and sounds like he is still improving - he would only be 22 or 23.

From memory, I think he could have stayed with us as a part timer this year but decided to go home if he wasn't getting a decent wage. I suspect we'd need to give him at least a 2nd tier contract to get him back.

    Randell and Mata’utia’s connection

    Matt Logue

    Sat 5th July, 09:00AM

When it comes to tight-knit friendships, Newcastle NSW Cup duo Tyler Randell and Chanel Mata’utia can be considered the best of buddies.

Mates since the Harold Matthews days coming through the junior ranks at the Knights, Randell and Mata'utia have long shared a tight bond on-and-off the field.

It's a connection that's set to continue next Wednesday night when the pair plays for the NSW Cup Representative side against the Queensland Residents at Suncorp Stadium.

The lead-up match to Origin III will be a special occasion for both boys, but especially Randell given the game will be his first rep jumper since he was 16.

"I've known Chanel for a long time going back to the junior days, so it's great to be selected together in this rep side," Randell says.

"I’m also really honoured to make the team and it will be a great experience up there at Suncorp for game three.

"It was shock to make it though, because I haven’t made any rep teams for a long time.

"I was in the Harold Matthews when I made my last rep team, so it's exciting."

It's a feeling shared by Mata'utia, who can't wait to don his state's colours for the first time since representing the NSW Under 20s two years ago.

He is also keen run around alongside his long-term mate Randell.

"I’ve played with Tyler for a long time, so it’s really good to be in this squad with him," Mata'utia says.

"It's always great to play for NSW in front of those bigger crowds, it's gives you that mad buzz."

Knights coach Rick Stone couldn't be happier with Mata'utia and Randell's selections on the wing and interchange bench respectively.

"Those two blokes thoroughly deserve their position," Stone enthuses.

"Chanel started the season off outstandingly before having a few injuries, but he has come back bigger and better in the last couple of weeks.

"When you’re looking for representative wingers, you are probably looking for that tough stuff on the play-two carries.

"And Chanel is probably as good as anyone in our competition. He is knocking right on the door for an NRL call-up, so hopefully he gets a return on that before the season is out.

"While Tyler has played numerous positions this year from halfback to five-eighth to hooker, second-row and lock and deserves his spot.

"Not that many players can cover that many positions, so I’ve always spoken to Tyler about No.14 being his best position rather than being six, seven or nine.

"Maybe that’s something in the future for Tyler as well.

"Kurt Gidley has done it at representative level and played a number of positions and that’s why I told Tyler not to get too hung up on one position."

That was a great Mathews side.
Chanel and Pat were fantastic in the backs.
Will Smith and Tyler Randell, or Tyler Sullivan as he was then, were fantastic in the halves.
And we had a massive forward pack with guys like Jermaine Wilson and Jeremy Maá both being about 110kg and unstoppable giants at under 16 level.
But the best player in the side was tiny hooker Chris Knight. He was the top try scorer because he would dart out of dummy half and go right to the line and if the defence went for him he would pass to a massive forward who would crash through, and if the defence held off him he would dummy and cut right through himself, and he had the speed to score from just about anywhere if he got into space.
I'll never know how that side missed a title - I blame Will Smith.
The captain of the side was a speedy centre named Chad Redman, now not a bad hooker.
