    Knights' facilities best in NRL

New and improved: Newcastle's Kurt Gidley, Chris Houston and Matt Hilder at the club gym.

KURT Gidley remembers only too well the days when Newcastle players were forced to use portaloos at training or simply "go behind a tree".

When they were strapped and rubbed down before sessions in the back of rusted old railway shipping containers.

When their "home" training base could have been any one of a number of suburban grounds or parks depending on what was available on the day.

"It doesn't seem that long ago either," Gidley said yesterday.

    How times have changed.

First Nathan Tinkler, then Wayne Bennett. Now, thanks to a multi-million-dollar sponsorship commitment from The Wests Group, the Knights finally have a training base and high-performance facilities the equal, if not better, than any other club.

Their exclusive training ground at Mayfield, adjacent to the facilities, even has a full-time greenkeeper with a playing surface so pristine, it could easily host an A-League soccer game.

All up, the facilities are worth more than $2 million with Wests spending around $500,000 each year to maintain them.

christ how did we ever compete with such third world facilities?
...says alot for the skill, talent and commitment of the blokes that ran around for us during those primitive days:applause: and says alot also about our former lack of professionalism...:@

Both, as the relationship between Wests and the old Knights admin (Burraston etc) was dysfunctional, and on the verge of breaking down at times ... these new facilities/improvements were only made in consultation with and in partnership with the Tinkler owned Knights, as mentioned in the Newcastle Herald article I quoted.

They have the fans well looked after and the players well looked after............ I reckon that the staff and management should get a cruise at the end of the season if the Knights go as well as we all hope they do. They can take the Wests board too!:)

Great stuff the players deserve the best facilities, this is a huge improvement on getting kicked off a local soccer ground a few years ago.
I really like that they have a full time curator to maintain the oval which hopefully helps in prevention of injuries.

    umm nah. Haha

But seriously I had no idea it was that bad and as Mr Goanna said it does say a lot about the men who stuck it out for us. No wonder we couldnt sign Marquee players in the past! Imagine trying to sell a position in the team to a possible incoming player with frikken porter loos and shipping containers to work with. What a joke.

Hard to believe they used to train down here at Windale.
