True !... I don't think with 5 clubs chasing him we ll get him on a short deal at a fair price though , I would be keen if we could get him for 1 or 2 years 300k or under but can't see that happening at the moment

I guess what we are really missing is a taumalolo, merrin, fifita, burgess, graham, warea hargreaves type player who regularly makes 130+ metres a game

Sione was doing that once he moved too 2rf. Think he made 100+ mtrs in every game he played there!

Jake, Dan and Sione are all 20 years old.
To put that into perspective, at the same age Paul Gallen had not yet played firstgrade and was 5 years off playing his first rep game.
Kade Snowden was doing short minutes off the bench or playing reserve grade and Brian Smith didn't rate him.

As Brown said in an interview in the off season, players need 50 games or/and 3 firstgrade off seasons to reach their potential. Some guys we think of as senior players for us like Pete Mataútia and Sam Mataora have just reached 50 games, and guys like Cory Denniss and Dylan Phythian are actually having their first firstgrade off season, and about half our squad are having their second.

On Balance, most of our squad is still 2 years short of being ready to show us their best football, and what Brown is doing is trying to fast track them all at the same time.

Danny's not quite there imo but he will be... in fact I think all the young guys did well even though we got the spoon.

I think if we can snare Wardle early then that should round out our signings for next season. Still if he does get an early release it'll be interesting to see whether Browny finds him to be a centre or back-rower. Will heat up competition for spots and should get the best out of everyone.

I haven't seen to much of Wardle, but, the fact he couldn't make the Scottish team worries me.

The Huddersfield fans seem more worried about losing 17 year old Jacob Wardle than his older brother. Jacob seems to be a bigger version of Joe who has played 1 game of firstgrade at 17.
If we could get both brothers I think it would be a good deal.

Huddersfield have promoted England academy international Jacob Wardle to their full-time squad for 2016 alongside his older brother Joe.
The Giants says they had to fight off competition from a host of Super League rivals to secure the future of the 16-year-old, who like his brother is a centre.

Huddersfield's head of youth Andy Kelly said: "The system put in place by the RFL means that, prior to signing their first professional contracts at a club, players are allowed to meet, visit and receive offers from rival teams. "To say Jacob had interest from other clubs would be an understatement. He most definitely had his pick of the best so to choose us ahead of the others has given myself and all here at the club a real boost.
"Obviously it helps with his brother having established himself here as a top flight professional.
"There are never any guarantees for young players in rugby league but this lad is certainly one for whom we all have high hopes."
    BOTH CENTRE'S

I hear we just signed Matty John's oldest son to an u20s contract for next year. Big name and legacy for the poor bugger.

[FONT=&amp][FONT=&amp]IT is the surname that conjures up so many wonderful rugby league memories for Newcastle fans.

But ask Matt Johns’ eldest boy Jack about his favourite moment from his dad or uncle’s careers and he just about draws a blank.

“Outside of the footage, there’s not too many to be honest,” Jack, 19, said.

“I can remember going into the Knights dressing sheds when I was really young. The old brick tunnel leading into the sheds in the old grandstand. That really strong smell of dencorub.

“And going to Joey’s final few matches towards the end of his career when I was a bit older with Nan and Pop. But that’s about it.”

Jack was weeks away from being born when the Johns brothers played such integral roles in Newcastle’s first premiership in 1997 and too young to savour uncle Andrew’s Clive Churchill medal winning performance in the club’s 2001 triumph.

But despite the lack of memories and moving away from Newcastle with his family as a toddler, he has never stopped supporting the club.

Now he has the chance to create some of his own memories.

Following a recommendation from his coaches Craig Gower and Scott Pethybridge at Sydney Shield club Peninsula Seagulls, the Knights have signed the five-eighth/fullback to their Holden Cup Under 20s squad for 2017.

For Jack, who couldn’t quite crack it in the Manly junior system because of injury, it’s an opportunity he wants to grab with both hands.

“I have supported the club my entire life but never expected to be playing here myself one day,” he said. “It’s pretty surreal. Awesome to be honest.”

Jack, who is studying sports management, said the pressure of carrying such a famous surname in a place like Newcastle doesn’t faze him.

“I don’t feel any added pressure to be honest,” he said.

“I know the history and how important the part Dad and Joey played for the club but at the end of the day, I play because I really enjoy it.

“I play for the respect of the blokes around me and the mateship. Some of the most loyal mates you can find are in footy and that’s one of the real attractions of playing for me.

“I’ll do my best but if it doesn’t work out, I’ll do something else. One of lessons dad really taught my brother Cooper and I is that rugby league is not the be all and end all.”

Matt and mother Trish could not be more proud.

But if the truth be known, Matt did his best to steer Jack away from a rugby league career when he was younger.

“Dad never wanted me to play footy ever. He’s always wanted me to do something else,” Jack said.

“He put just about every other sporting instrument in my hand as I was growing up but it didn’t work.”

Matt said his son has “always been his own boy”.

“As far as footy’s concerned, I resist the temptation to give him advice because I’ve always had the belief that he’s needed a dad, not a coach,” Matt said.

“He goes to the Knights with no expectations. He’s gone up there with absolutely no sense of entitlement that he should get a fair go.

“He’s just excited about being given the chance to play for the club that he’s always supported and Trish and I are just excited for him.”

Wonder if he will focus on flb? Given our lack of decent players in that position it could be his fastest way into the nrl side?
