NRL Integrity Unit to investigate alleged racial abuse aimed at Greg Inglis during Panthers clash

THE NRL Integrity Unit has launched a dramatic investigation into a fan’s alleged racial abuse of South Sydney star Greg Inglis during the Rabbitohs’ loss to Penrith on Saturday.

Inglis this morning lodged a complaint with the Rabbitohs general manager of football, Shane Richardson, before the matter was swiftly forwarded to the NRL Integrity Unit.

The alleged incident happened when a fan at Penrith Stadium allegedly abused Inglis as he left the field in the first half for an HIA test.

“Panthers has been made aware of an allegation of racial abuse directed at South Sydney player Greg Inglis by a member of the crowd at Panthers Stadium yesterday,” Penrith CEO Brian Fletcher said.

“I wish to make it clear our club does not tolerate this kind of behaviour in any form. We will work with the NRL to investigate the matter and any perpetrators will be swiftly dealt with.

“Our club apologises unreservedly to Greg Inglis for the upset caused by the alleged incident.”

Inglis was booed by the crowd as he left the field, prompting an angry response on Twitter from Cronulla Sharks star Josh Dugan.

NRL issues breach notices to fans over alleged Inglis abuse

The NRL has formally issued breach notices to two spectators who allegedly racially abused South Sydney Rabbiohs skipper Greg Inglis at Panthers Stadium.

Inglis was allegedly called a "black dog" by members of the crowd after South Sydney's loss to the Penrith Panthers in round two, with NRL CEO Todd Greenberg vowing to "throw the book" at those responsible if the offensive comments are proven.

An NRL spokesman said the two crowd members have until Thursday to respond to the notices before any penalty is imposed by the governing body.

It's understood one of the spectators is a Panthers member, whose membership has been suspended pending the investigation.

Both the Panthers and Greenberg have publicly apologised to Inglis in the wake of the incident, with the NRL boss last week declaring those responsible "would not be welcome back in the game" if the claims were proven.
