Funny things happen in junior finals.
Some kids play the game of their lives and other kids get nervous and play terrible.
    Upsets happen all the time.
Having said that, we beat them easily last week and are heaps better this week.
Sione should have a great game I think.

The Newcastle Knights NYC's gutsy win over the St George Illawarra Dragons rewarded the talent-packed side with the minor premiership after sitting on top of the table for much of the season.

Knights TV spoke to Bryce Donovan, Brock Lamb, Joe Boyce after the side’s telling victory.

The resilience and versatility of the NYC players was illustrated when Bryce Donovan was moved from the wing to fullback at the last minute when Jake Mamo was ruled out through injury.

“I got the text about 8.30 this morning off the coach saying Jake wasn’t going to be able to play, so I prepared to play at fullback,” Donovan said.

“I enjoyed it, it was a good game.”

The positional change proved no challenge for Donovan who scored a try in the first half.

“I got the ball and was tipped up by the coach to think run as soon as I got it, and the hole was there so it was good to get a try.

He also kicked six from seven goals in a howling wind at Hunter Stadium an effort that Donovan reveals has come from around an hour and a half practice every day.

“I do as many as I can, and if I’m on a good roll, I might quit while I’m ahead.

“Donovan’s try scoring ability was captivating throughout the season he has earned the highest points

“I’m pretty stoked to get that, but more importantly I’m glad at how the team’s gone this year, coming on top and playing like they did today.

Meanwhile, 17-year-old Brock Lamb stepped into the side at five-eighth after Jack Cogger was ruled out of the match due to an ankle injury.

Brock played an outstanding game scoring a double as well as playing a hand in a number of the team’s tries.

“It was a good game from the boys and the forward worked really well, it made it a lot easier for me to score tires and set up tries.

The Knights now face up to the Dragons again this weekend for the semi final on Saturday at Allianz Stadium at 1pm.

    Match analysis:

The NYC Newcastle Knights are ready and raring to head into the first week of the finals and according to the Club’s strength and conditioning coach Mick Reid, the team is on track to reach its peak just at the right time of the season.

“They are progressing nicely and this is what we want, for them to start hitting their peak towards the back end of the year, the finals, semi finals and grand finals,” Reid said.

“The penny has slowly dropped with them so what we need to do is keep working on moving forward so we hit at the right time of the year, which is hopefully the grand final.”

With the conclusion of the Knights' NRL season, Sione Mata’utia, Jake Mamo and Joseph Tapine are all back in the under 20s ranks.

Mamo was named in the line up last week, but at the last minute was rested due to a problem with his back.

“We decided to give him the week off to make sure he was right for this weekend,” Reid said.

“The advantage is that the boys coming back have got some NRL experience and their understanding of how to control a game is a little bit better, yet the danger is the guys in the squad who haven’t been up there will rely on them a little but more,” Reid said.

“What we have to try to get our boys up to where Sione, Jake and Joe have been.”

The fact that Sione has maintained a close contact with the team and has been there in the dressing sheds and half time each week following
the team with great interest is a positive.

“He loves playing rugby league, he’s pretty pumped and think he’ll have a positive influence on the rest of the players around him,” Reid said.

The combination between Mata’utia and Chance Peni on the wing will no doubt be dangerous with the added experience Mata’utia will bring from his time in first grade.

At the same time, the partnership between Bryce Donovan and Braden Robson on the Knights' opposite wing is also expected to be a prosperous one.

Donovan was the highest point scorer in the entire NYC competition bagging an abundance of tries and offering up a consistent kicking game for his team all season.

Captain Danny Levi will again be at the helm of the team after sitting out of last week’s game due to a strained quad.

“He’s back and strong this week which is the most important game for us,” Reid said.

The side will be carried on the strength of NRL debutant Joe Tapine and the powerful Lachlan Fitzgibbon who has proved a regular try scorer for the team.

Reid said the Knights expect high intensity from the opposition right from the start.

They will bring a little bit more fire and enthusiasm, they have four players back, so will be a bit like us and have a little bit of extra strength there,” Reid said.

“They won the back end of the game last week so that’s where we should be mindful of and control the game a little bit better than what we did last.

“I think we need to be a bit more professional.

“The boys have their mind on the job and know there’s the bigger picture out there."

    Where it will be won:

    Whoever wants the win most.

We are both evenly matched,” Reid said.

They’re the same as us, right across the board.

“We’re not a big team but we are team that works together so it will be who controls the game.

“The kicking game will be a big part of it, the Dragons have some good kickers.

“They showed the smarts there a little bit last week when they got a 40/20 in the chip in the back end so we need to be wary of their kickers.

“It will come down to who controls the ball and a little bit of mental toughness."

    The final word:

Fullback Jake Mamo reveals there’s a positive vibe among his teammates as Saturday’s game approaches.

“We’ll go into this game with quite a different side and they will too, so we can’t really take much from last week’s game, but we’ll be fielding our strongest team and we’ll play how we know how to play and hopefully come away with the win.

Our form over the last month has been outstanding except for that one game against Brisbane.
We have beaten some of the top contenders, and we haven't had our best side available.
There is a real feeling that the side is building every week.

NYC Knights full strength for finals

    Fri 12th September, 03:21PM

The NYC Knights are set to field a full strength team and are ready to launch into another high intensity match against the George Illawarra Dragons for the first week of the finals.

Knights TV caught up with NYC captain Danny Levi after the side’s Thursday afternoon training session at Wests Mayfield before the match on Saturday at Allianz Stadium.

Levi said the team’s preparation has been strong with the players focused and determined to earn a victory that will put them one step closer to the grand final.

“All the boys are pretty confident this week, we had a good win over them last week, so I’m pretty sure the boys are keen to back that up again,” he said.

Levi only had a small taste of the Dragon’s last week leaving the field five minutes into the match due to a minor quad strain.

“I had a bit of a niggle so the coaches decided to pull me off so it would hopefully get better for this week.”

“We did a few tests and I think I’m 100 per cent and raring to go,”

Despite the Knights 10 point lead last week, the hooker said the side refuses to underestimate the opposition on Saturday.

“I’m sure they’ll be coming out firing after their loss, it’s semi final football now so I’m pretty sure everyone is raring to go.”

“The boys are up to it so we’ll be looking for a big one.”

The 19-year-old, who was recently named in the 2014 NYC Team of the Year, believes the return of the side’s NRL players Joe Tapine, Sione Mata’utia and Jake Mamo will provide an advantage.

“It’s good to have Sione back from first grade and bringing some experience back and I’m sure he’s going to have a big one too.”

I'm starting to wonder if Pondekas is still with us if they reckon we are at full strength.
We have heard nothing about him for 3 weeks or so.
