Train from central station takes less than 3 hours.
Get off at Broadmeadow station and the walk to the stadium takes about 15 minutes.
If you want to turn it into a sightseeing visit to Newcastle, you would be better off staying in one of the backpackers near the beach in central Newcastle, where you should be able to arrange day trips to the Hunter Valley wineries - but it's winter, so the beach precinct is a bit of a waste of time.
If all you are interested in is the football, Wests Rugby League club is a few hundreds metres from the ground. It is a typical club with many dining options, all the poker machines you could ever want, and good accomodation that isn't too expensive - or you could just make it a day trip and head back to Sydney after the game.

Thanks very much, the plan is to travel down Monday lunchtime, watch the game, few beers afterwards then head back to Sydney the following day so probably won't wander far from the Broadmeadows area if it caters for that type of thing?

Apart from the Wests club and a few pubs there is nothing much in the area, but Wests should be good enough for one day.
One train station past Broadmeadow (about 4 kilometres) is Hamilton, and right outside the station is the most interesting dining precinct in Newcastle - Beaumont street Hamilton has several good pubs, and restaurants that range from Italian, Mexican, Indian, Thai etc etc.
