Knights Injury and Suspension Updates

Re JSaf. I hear Ayoub say that he had multiple fractures in the shoulder. Due back round 24. Our season done and dusted why not tell to think about next year.

God it would be demoralizing if we picked up the spoon after all the ups & downs of this season, with only injuries to put us back at the bottom. I think we should be safe though.

Realistically we’ll only have JSaf and KP to come back this season with Mogs and Nugget back mid-2019 and Pearce, DSaf and Ross to return against Parra so it’s not as bad as it seems, just all happened at a terrible time.

Round 17 injury update: Griffin 'shattered' but positive after knee

Newcastle Knights
Wed 4 Jul 2018, 12:52 PM

A 'shattered' Slade Griffin has thanked the rugby league public for their lovely messages of support as he copes with the reality of a lengthy and arduous return from injury.

The nib Newcastle Knight suffered a season ending knee injury last week and faces 9-12 months on the sidelines.

"Thank you to everyone for your kind messages," Griffin posted on Instagram.

"It's times like these that you know the rugby league community is one big family. I'm shattered I won't be able to lace up for the @nrlknights (Newcastle Knights) for a long time.

"Lucky someone sent an angel to look after me time and time again. @gracealoma (Grace Courtenay) I'm sorry but I thank you for being strong and for looking after me like a baby."

His third ACL injury to his left knee, Griffin has every right to be upset.

Yet according to Physical Performance Manager, Tony Ayoub, Griffin is optimistic.

"Surprisingly positive," Ayoub said of Griffin's mental state.

"In his own words, 'I'll see where it takes me'.

"He's really positive about coming back. He's already spoken to a couple of guys who have had multiple knee-ACL's and he's certainly getting some positive vibes from them.

"You look at the way he works and how positive he is, how hard and professional he is, if anyone's going to come back, it's going to be him."

The hooker's injury is as bad as it gets.

He suffered multiple ruptures to ligaments in his knee, including a ruptured ACL graft, ruptured lateral ligament and torn lateral meniscus.

"Unfortunately, it's probably the worst possible news," Ayoub said.

"Slade had two reconstructions on that knee and unfortunately he's re-torn through the ACL graft.

"He's got a lateral ligament tear. Virtually that whole lateral joint line's pretty mangled at the moment.

"We're just getting some information from a couple of different surgeons, we're gathering a couple of different opinions and hopefully we'll have that by the end of this week, early next week.

"There's no doubt his season is over. It's probably going to be at least a 9-12 month (recovery) but he's a really positive kid. He's going to work hard."

Injured players and expected return dates:

Tautau Moga (ACL, Season)

Slade Griffin (Knee, Season)

Jacob Saifiti (Shoulder, Round 24)

Kalyn Ponga (Hamstring, Round 20-21)

Daniel Saifiti (Foot, Round 18-19)

Mitchell Pearce (Pectoral, Round 18-19)

Pearce to make final call on NRL injury return

Newcastle Knights
Thu 5 Jul 2018, 08:53 AM

Mitchell Pearce has been pencilled in to make his return next weekend.

After tearing his pectoral against the Wests Tigers back in Round 7, his rehabilitation is complete and in unrestricted training.

He's been participating in contact work for more than three weeks now and back running the show on the field.

Physical Performance Manager, Tony Ayoub, revealed it will be Pearce's call on whether he returns against Parramatta next Friday night.

"He's had his first full session today, there was no restriction, he got through the session and he was pretty confident," Ayoub said.

"He's doing everything in the gym that we ask of him and some.

"You've got to try and pull him back (at times), he's just so positive and so professional in his approach.

"He's got another couple of sessions this week and then a full week next week.

"The way it's looking, there's definitely going to be positive news.

The forward has been sidelined with a lisfranc fracture but eyeing an early return.

"He's ticked a few boxes," Ayoub said.

"He's actually run a little quicker than we thought.

"I've got to get in contact with the surgeon, we haven't seen him for a follow-up but Daniel's really positive.

"He's been hopping and jumping when he shouldn't have been and that's a positive sign.

"Looking at him in the gym and what he's done out on the field in the last couple of days, hopefully we might toss him into skills next week.

"He's one we're definitely going to play Round 19 and it's one of those ones, if we get it wrong, there's going to be some dire consequences with it. We just have to make sure we tick the right boxes."

Round 18 Injury Update: Ponga progress, Griffin surgery

Newcastle Knights
Mon 9 Jul 2018, 02:50 PM

Kalyn Ponga is a slight chance of making an early return from injury.

The nib Newcastle Knights fullback injured his hamstring against the Bulldogs in Round 16 but started running over the weekend.

Physical Performance Manager, Tony Ayoub has revealed Ponga is progressing nicely and a possibility to make his comeback in just over a week.

"He's working really hard with the physios," Ayoub told newcastleknights.com.au.

"He's done some strength stuff in the gym. He's ticking the right boxes and had a couple of runs already.

It's all looking well for definitely Round 20 (against the Cowboys).

"It's a matter of how much work we can get into him over the next few days and the next week and we'll make a decision on the Titans (game next week) but certainly we're looking at Round 20."

Mitchell Pearce returns this weekend to take on Parramatta, while Daniel Saifiti has been pencilled in to also make his return.

Saifiti has been sidelined since injuring his foot against the Eels but is ahead of schedule.

"We've loaded him up a fair bit in the last week or so," Ayoub explained.

"He's really confident in probably having a run this week."

Meanwhile, Slade Griffin will have surgery to repair his knee this week.

The hooker will have two operations on his knee to repair

"It seems to have consumed a bit of our time and rightly so with the degree of damage that he's had," Ayoub said.

"We've made a decision, he's going to go to Melbourne and get a two-stage operation.

"He'll be operated on first thing (Tuesday morning). They'll repair his knee for the next lot of surgery in about three months' time."

Injured players and expected return dates:

Slade Griffin (Knee, Season)

Jacob Saifiti (Shoulder, Round 24)

Kalyn Ponga (Hamstring, Round 19-20)

Injury update: ‘We thought it was going to be the season’

Kalyn Ponga is likely to be rested another week as he overcomes a hamstring complaint.

The nib Newcastle Knights fullback is poised to ramp up his training later this week but Physical Performance Manager, Tony Ayoub, expects Ponga to sit-out Saturday's clash with the Gold Coast.

"He's so laid back, it's hard sometimes but tracking really well," Ayoub toldnewcastleknights.com.au.

"We got some speed out of him (on Monday). We're hopefully going to toss him in for a bit of skills on Wednesday but realistically we're looking at one more round before we get him back."

In some good news for the Club, forward Jacob Saifiti is nearing a return from a shoulder injury.

Ayoub said the 22-year-old will visit the specialist this week for a check-up and will ramp up his training providing he's given the tick of approval.

"We're going to toss him into some skills for about two to three weeks," he said.

"Realistically we're looking at Round 22 or Round 23 which will give us a couple of games at the end of the season.

"He's working really hard."

The most recent addition to the injured unit is Sione Mata'utia.

The centre will miss a few weeks with a fractured eye socket.

"Although he's got a fracture to the eye socket, the function (of the eye) is quite good," Ayoub said.

"We're going to sit on it for a couple of weeks and then reassess it but we're looking at probably three or four weeks out.

"That's better than we initially thought with such a large fracture. We thought it was going to be the season. Pretty much the next six weeks but we've got some positive news."

Tautau Moga (ACL, Season)

Slade Griffin (Knee, Season)

Jacob Saifiti (Shoulder, Round 22-23)

Sione Mata'utia (Fractured eye socket, Round 22)
