I haven't seen them play many times - only a trial and 2 games - but Lowrie has got together a very good squad, especially forwards, and I expect a lot of them will train with he seniors next off season.

Jersey Flegg Knights grind out win over Bulldogs

    Newcastle Knights
    Sun 20 May 2018, 09:59 AM

Back after a two week break, the Knights Jersey Flegg side continued their winning run with a two-point victory over the Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs on Saturday afternoon at Belmore Sports Ground.

While the Bulldogs led for most of the match, two tries in the final 15 minutes sealed the win for the Knights, and a Kurtis Dark conversion for a thrilling finish.

On debut, centre Starford To'a opened the scoring for the Knights with a try in the 12th minute. Kurtis Dark added the extras and it was 6-0 to Newcastle early on.

The Bulldogs exchanged fire five minutes later with a try from halfback Brandon Wakeham, who then went on to convert and level the scores, 6-all.

It was a long time before the next points as both sides battled it out for the remainder of the first half to head into the break still tied at 6-all.

Finally in the 65th minute, the Bulldogs broke the drought and Kyle Cassel crossed over and again four minutes later the home side's Tuipulotu Katoa crashed over for their third try. Wakeham booted one of the two conversions and the Bulldogs were in-front, 16-6.

In the final ten minutes the Knights kicked their game into gear with a Matthew Moon try in the 75th minute. A Dark conversion got them to within four points.

And in the dying minute of the match, Beau Fermor crossed over for the red and blues to level the scores at 16-all and with a pin-point kick from Dark, it put the Knights back in the lead to secure the win, 18-16, over the Bulldogs.

    Summary

    Knights 18 (T: To'a, Moon, Fermor G: Dark 3/3)
    Bulldogs 16 (T: Wakeham, Cassel, Katoa G: Wakeham 2/3)

That's still a good team, even though Starling, Saulo, Loughrey, Farr, Huth, Fermor, Andrews is pretty much a list 7 of our best 10 players, an they at all injured or playing reserve grade.

Jersey Flegg match preview: Round 12

Newcastle Knights v St George Illawarra Dragons

    Date: Saturday, May 26
    Kick-off: 3pm
    Venue: Cessnock Sports Ground

    Team
    1. Matt Cooper, 2. Garry Anderson, 3. Brayden Musgrove, 4. Ofa Manuofetoa, 5. Justin Worley, 6. Tex Hoy, 7. Nash Birch, 8. Matt Croker, 9. Matthew Moon, 10. Jirah Momoisea, 11. Kurtis Dark, 12. Brandon Russell, 13. Tevita Alifa. Interchange. 14. Ben Talty, 15. Joe Bromage, 16. Kye Hopwood, 17. Jack Cameron.

The season so far for the Newcastle Knights Jersey Flegg side couldn't be going any better, as they sit on the top of the table with eight wins from nine games.

Coach Todd Lowrie said they've been lucky to have a fairly stable outfit this year, and when new players do come into the side they're performing to a high standard.

"They're going well, and up until the last two weeks, we have had a pretty settled team which helps," added Lowrie.

"Every guy who has come in and had an opportunity; last week we had four guys making their Club debut or playing their first game for the 20s, that's quite a few for any one week and they did a really good job.

"To be sitting where we are at this time of the year is certainly a reward for a lot of hard work they have done, and we know there is a long time to go but we're pretty happy with where we are."

This week Matt Cooper comes back into the number one jersey, while Tex Hoy has been shuffled back to five-eighth with Nash Birch in halfback and Hayden Loughrey getting his opportunity in ISP.

"Coops has played with us for most of the year, he has had a couple of games in ISP but he's always done really well for us and he is good to have back in the team," Lowrie commented.

"Tex (Hoy) has also been going well so although it is not ideal to lose Hayden (Loughrey), who is our captain and our half, we're more than happy to put Tex in the halves and he's quite happy to play for us there as well."

Ben Talty also makes his first appearance for the Under 20s from the bench, while Tevita Alifa moves off the bench into the starting 13 with the loss of Beau Fermor to ISP.

"Ben has been part of our squad all year and he trained really well in the summer," said Lowrie.

"He's still only a year young and has been one of the guys on the brink, but with our backs they have been a little bit shuffled.

"Beau Fermor was 18th man about two weeks ago and just missed out, and with Sam Stone out with an injury, he'll get an opportunity and I'm sure he will do really well and show what he can do at that level."

Earlier this season the Knights travelled to Gerringong to play the Dragons and still managed to claim victory.

"We beat the Dragons at their home ground so that was a big trip and they'll certainly have that in the back of their minds and they'll be keen to come up here and perform well against us," said the Jersey Flegg coach.

"They're a pretty good team, they're sitting up towards the top of the ladder and they've certainly got some handy players, so they'll be keen to get one back against us.

"They've got a lot of strengths, they've got a lot of good attacking players and they're really hard to handle.

"Their outside backs are quite handy as well so they're a pretty fair outfit."

Tex Hoy didn't have a great game at 5/8 the last time he played there - I think it was the game we lost. He was trying too hard to do it all himself I think.
I look forward to seeing how he goes today.

Another last minute win - 36-32 with a try and conversion in the last minute to win.

With Musgrove a late withdrawal the backline nearly cost us the game. Saints winger scored 3 soft tries down our left wing, and if they'd have gone there more often they'd have scored 3 more.
Tex Hoy and Ben Talty came up with 3 tries for us with Hoy putting second row Talty through the line with long, flat passes time after time. Hoy looked much better when he used his playmaking skills- rather than trying to run himself every time.
Kurtis Dark kicked 6 from 6, several of them from the sideline.

If Dark were as big as his cousin, Boyd Cordner, he'd be our best prospect. Pity he's hardly grown since he played for NSW in under 16s.
He rarely makes a mistake and does so many skilful things.

I'm glad Farr is back to replace Anderson.
The Anderson brothers go OK, but last week we let in about 3 soft tries down that wing, and replacing a 5'6" guy with a 6'8" guy might plug up that gap.
Huth and Fuimaono back also makes the side look stronger - I'll be surprized if those 2 don't start at hooker and prop.
I see Brendan O'Hagan will play halfback for Mounties.
Pity we don't have Saulo, Musgrove, Starling or Jones in under 20s to play against their former on field leader in O'Hagan. The only 2 members of our national title winning under 16s team that O'Hagan led that are still in under 20s are Matt Cooper and Kurtis Dark.

Jersey Flegg Knights keep top of table status despite disruptions

    Newcastle Knights
    Fri 1 Jun 2018, 01:48 PM

    Mounties v Newcastle Knights

    Date: Saturday, June 2
    Kick-off: 1pm
    Venue: Aubrey Keech Reserve

    Team

    1. Matt Cooper, 2. Lachlan Farr, 3. Justin Worley, 4. Ofa Manuofetoa, 5. Elijah Rasiga, 6. Tex Hoy, 7. Nash Birch, 8. Matt Croker, 9. Matthew Moon, 10. Jirah Momoisea, 11. Kurtis Dark, 12. Brandon Russell, 13. Tevita Alifa. Interchange. 14. Ben Talty, 15. Joe Bromage, 16. Luke Huth, 17. Henry-Siriah Fuimaono.

The Newcastle Knights Jersey Flegg side may proudly be sitting at the top of the ladder, but coach Todd Lowrie admits it's been difficult with recent disruptions to his squad.

Changes due to injury and form at NRL level have filtered down to the Under 20s. Players including influential forward Beau Fermor, who has recorded the second most tries in the competition so far this season, has been promoted to ISP along with teammates Matt Cooper, Brayden Musgrove and Pasami Saulo on several occasions.

"It's been quite difficult for us, with the disruptions the NRL has had, because that affects everybody in the Club," Lowrie explained.

"It all filters down and we are the last of the three teams that know about it, so we get affected."

But the pleasing thing for the Under 20s coach is the resilience and determination his men have shown, whoever is in the side, to maintain their superb winning record of nine from ten matches.

"The way the guys have been playing and continuing to win and do what they do, has been a real credit to them over the last couple of weeks," Lowrie added.

"We have still managed to get a couple of wins purely through their hard work and it is a reward for them for the work that we're doing.

"The new guys that are coming in to the team, they're certainly doing a good job and allowed us to get some wins up."

Some of the new faces have include Elijah Rasiga who made his debut in the 20s last week and scored a try and is again in the starting line-up.

"He went well for us last week, he came down from Armidale in the off-season on a train and trial and he went really well," said the Jersey Flegg coach.

"He is training really hard and certainly deserves his opportunity and to see him go well was really good and has held his spot this week."

Another new halves pairing of Tex Hoy and Nash Birch has also impressed Lowrie, with Hayden Loughrey getting his chance in ISP.

"They went well, Tex and Nash know each other quite well and they've played a lot of footy together, so knowing each other quite well makes it a little bit easier," Lowrie commented.

"I thought Tex was the best player on the field on the weekend and Nash has been there for us all year and takes on a bit more responsibility in guiding the team around."

The bench has also been stacked with a few good inclusions, who come back from injury, including Luke Huth and Henry-Siriah Fuimaono.

"Henry has been out for about six weeks, had a game for Maitland on the weekend, and went really well so he comes back in," Lowrie said.

"Luke Huth has been injured as well, and in our break got a knee injury, so has been out for a couple of weeks so it's his first game back.

"It's good to have Luke and Henry back because they have played a lot for us and they have been guys that have brought a lot to the team."

The Knights are yet to play the Mounties this year and don't know too much about what to expect on Saturday but Lowrie maintains being a Canberra feeder team, they'll be stacked with big bodies.

"They are quite big through the middle," he said.

"A Central Coast guy Brendon O'Hagan is playing in the halves for them, he has been going quite well, and has found himself a new home there.

"We know how dangerous he is, so he'll be one we'll be watching out for." For all Knights news and info, subscribe to Enews here.

Glad to see Lowrie thinks Tex Hoy was our best last week. I thought so too.
It's amazing that we have been able to keep winning with Jones, Starling, Saulo, Fermor, Musgrove, Loughrey, Andrews, Cooper and Jirah all playing one or more games in reserve grade.
That is a lot of talented 20 year old to have to replace with 18 and 19 year olds.
